Regarding knife maintenance, one thing I do that I’ve heard should be good is: After cleaning and drying knife, I give it a layer of olive oil to add an additional protection from water next time it gets wet.

Try using mineral oil or fluid film to get the same effect with an oil that won't become rancid like olive oil.

I use a waterproof silicone grease. It stays on and I've had no corrosion problems since I started using it.

reason for olive oil is that it is not polluting the water same way as mineral oil or silicone. Haven’t noticed that it’s getting rancid, I just make sure I give it a proper cleaning every now and then

After a dive, my first wash is my BC, and I use a cleaner like “Slosh” or another enzymatic cleaner. After my and my wife’s BCs, next in go the wetsuits, skins, booties, gloves (same water/cleaner). Then goes the accessories like you’ve mentioned here. Two questions. One, is there too much salt in the cleaning water? Two, if changing the water, is it better (worse? unnecessary?) to put cleaning solution in the water for knives, spools, dSMBs, etc? The cleaning solutions are not cheap, but neither is kit/gear. But I notice you just use fresh water (but maybe longer rinses).

One maintenance item you forgot on that reel is the locking device, sand and salt can get into it. So work it a couple times underwater to make sure that it is cleared out. This isn't as much of an issue with reels that use a screw type locking device. But on those unscrew them often to make sure that they haven't corroded in place. "This reel is expensive, it starts at $100..." more like that one starts at $149, and is $165 for the larger sizes. And between primary, safeties, and jumps I have too many of them. I would never take one of them into an openwater environment with a doubleender. I would use cave line to tie a traditional bolt snap to the hole, or at the very least tie some paracord to the hole, and connect the doubleender to that. Connecting a doubleender to a hard surface like that is how you lose a $165 reel to poseidon.

Hey James I’m wondering if you have a place where your viewers can ask questions besides these comment sections. I’m buying my first reg and first stage and the local dive shop where I did my open water certification is not a Scuba Pro dealer, they only sell Aqua Lung, Zeagle, Sherwood, Atomic, etc. I know you’ve recommended a Scuba Pro G260 second stage with a Mark 17 first stage, but I’ve never heard you recommend a Zeagle or Aqua Lung. The shop owner tells me to go with the “Zeagle F8 hands down”. What is your opinion on Zeagle and specifically the Zeagle gear vs the previously mentioned Scuba Pro gear. Thanks for all the informative videos, I’ve learned a lot from your channel!

Hi James, thanks for another great video! Do you have any tips on how to dry the DSMB after rinsing it? I imagine it must take a really long time for a closed DSMB to dry if the only air entry is the valve.

Yes I do! The trick is to put something inside the tube that separates the two panels. I've found that dice work really well for this and you can spread them along the tube and recover them easily.

I know this is a bit off topic but I just got the Apeks WTX 30 wing and the corrugated hose is too long. I was going to switch out to the 12" hose but now am wondering what size inflator hose should I pair with the new 12" corrugated? If anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it.

James, Once we have washed our gear, where should we store it? Is there any concern that storing gear in non-climate controlled settings (garage, shed) will lead to it degrading? For reference, I live just up I-95 in West Palm Beach, so it's always warm here. My biggest concern is the extreme heat of the summer months.
