Great to see this run-through, Shae! Been thinking about pulling the trigger on the jazz bass version of your P-bass lately; glad to hear it can walk the line between a worshipful + rock sort of tone, since that's the two environments I mostly play in haha. Thanks for doing this, you're an awesome bassist!

Bro, keep rockin the 4! Love a 5, and love my 5, but when you have the ability to string B-E-A-D or switch during sets, keep rockin it. Of course, that low B rumble is a treat. Hey Shae what are some of the advantages and disadvantages of flatwound strings? Would you be comfortable using them for a whole set or is it more of a song selection thing to where you would need another bass with round? I was thinking about trying some but not sure if it’s worth using them all the time. I play in my worship band.
@shaewooten

That is a great question! 99% of the time I am playing rounds. For most sets that would be my approach, especially worship. I really love flats and the type of playing they inspire. I think that just working the sustain pedal into the pedal board is a real no brainer for anyone who plays guitar/keys or bass/synthbass (which IMO all modern touring/gigging musicians in pop or pop adjacent genres need to at least be somewhat familiar with.)

@@jackkovar7806 Without a sustain pedal the bass note would stop playing the instant he took his finger off the key, so there would be a bar or two where the song has no low end while he goes to bass guitar. @@335pd I mainly use it for the "color". I don't compress or boost the signal too much. Just a little to take the edge off and get the effect of the la2a.

How do you connect the sustain pedal the moog??
@shaewooten
@shaewooten 4 жыл бұрын
the KB GATE jack. It will also repeat the last note you played if you hit the sustain again without playing a key. Handy little trick for songs that need big endings.

Do you always have the drive active? Or only on certain situations?
@shaewooten
@shaewooten 4 жыл бұрын
I keep some kind of transparent drive like a JHS prestige or Zvex super hard on type of thing at the beginning of my chain that is always on, not to hot though. Just for a little saturation. Aside from that it is usually situational.

You use the proper BEAD gauges for this? I’ve experimented with this and I went back to 5 string Jazz. Looking for a 4 string P bass next year... in this exact colour!

Ryan Kasteel I have used ESP Guitars’ roadmap for what string sizes they use for detuned basses: .070, .090, .110, & .130 but some bridges won’t fit unless the thickest are tapered

Shae - what strings do you typically use? You use more of flats or round?
@shaewooten
@shaewooten 4 жыл бұрын
On my Jazz bass I always do rounds. For my P bass i usually keep rounds on it, but I keep a set of flats in my case if it comes up. My mustang I pretty much leave with flat wounds and have a piece of foam in the bridge for a mute.

Shae Wooten awesome man. Thanks. I tend to keep rounds on my J Bass as well. I have been dancing around the idea of going with flats, thought I would ask.

Ive grown accustomed to not having an amp with me for most things because of in-ear monitors and actually prefer that in a larger setting. When I am playing smaller music clubs I love having a small combo amp of some kind.

2:05 Much respect. You don't just jump from a 4-string to a 5-string because they're 2 different instruments. Anyone who thinks you can is misinformed. I started playing 5 and it's not an easy jump to 4 or vice versa.
