Gear Tips When Starting to Backpack

My biggest regret was buying everything first or buying the expensive version. Wish I could’ve brought just the basics and bought/upgraded things as I needed them.

I'm kind of the opposite. I hesitated in the beginning, trying to find the "best budget items" for just about everything. Only to later realize I should have just spent the extra money in the beginning to get at least the best of the best for my big 3. Instead, I ended up just having to sell off my budget gear for a loss and got the more expensive gear anyway. : )

​@scottyplug from what I see, most people are in your shoes. With enough research, you can figure out items you need money on and items that have a little more flexibility. Most of the time, you get what you pay for, the items have more convience, last longer and backed by a better warranty. Goodluck out there

Great advice! Gear changes so quickly now . I’d advocate KZbin as a way of finding out the best options for your budget. Sleep system and shelter the two main priorities imo 👌🇮🇪Greetings from Ireland Justin 🇮🇪👌Atb Tony

I’ve been really lucky cuz my dad is a backpacker and I’ve been able to borrow and try out a bunch of his gear before deciding what to buy. He’s not quite an ultralight backpacker but he uses a lot of ultralight stuff so that has been nice too cuz I’ve got some mobility and pain issues so I’m trying to keep my pack as light as possible

Make sure that your pack liner is on the list, otherwise you might end up having to use your food bag to protect your sleep gear. 😉
