gear update & packing list | Solo to Alaska

Traveling alone to Alaska (from the East Coast) in my converted into a camper 2008 Subaru Forester XT Sports with manual transmission. During this solo roadtrip I will cross the US and head north through Canada on Alaska Highway all the way to Fairbanks/ Anchorage. In this video I talk about my camping gear and things I take for this long solo roadtrip.

SUGGESTION. great items. Bring mosquito netting and a mosquito hat. You can bring netting to drape over the back of your car hatch tailgate when open so you can sit outside but will keep the black flies off you. Also, slime is a mess. Keep the metal drinking cup with the lid bc you can fill it with feminine products, bandaids, tweezers, hand and body wipes or poop wipes and a tea bag or whatever. You can also leave it in your car cup holder and place your warmer when done heating your tea. If you have toiletries in it you can carry into a restroom at rest stops and noone will think different. Make sure you change ALL the fluids in your car before you leave and check your battery. Bring 1 bottle of car oil, 1 extra windshield washer fluid bc Alaska roads are dusty, a red safety triangle, a flashlight, a simple tool kit and duct tape and bug spray. Good Luck.

Scrap the slime and go for a puncture repair kit and a small 12V tire inflator. If you get a flat you can have your tire repair but if you've used the slime, the tire guys won't touch it. In Canada, Canadian Tire is better than Walmart. Princess Auto is the equivalent of Tractor Supply and Safeway, Sobeys and Superstore all have great selections of specialty foods. Oh, and by the way, Canadian's will talk to anyone so don't be surprised when random strangers strike up a conversation. You haven't mentioned much about your rout but hopefully you'll have a chance to really see a lot of some of the lesser known parts of Canada. Winnipeg is fascinating, Saskatoon is stunning, the Badlands in Alberta are stunning. The Peace Country in fall is gorgeous and the interior of BC is a closely held secret that even a lot of Canadian's don't know a lot about. Stay off the major highways unless you have no options and you'll have an amazing time. I'll keep watching!

Ive being using a Viair compressor for about 8 years now. I kept one in my truck due to having RV's and various other trailers that require 80-120psi in the tires and have used it at least 20 times. Still use it today. They are not junk and will give you years of reliable service. If I'm getting an item for emergencies, I want something I can count on. I got mine off Amazon. There is plenty of gas available going up to Alaska. The Yukon is where to really pay attention. Don’t let your tank go below half especially as you get closer to Tok, Alaska. Once you get into Alaska shouldn’t be an issue. If you travel the Casiar pay close attention after Fort Frazier.

Those slime kits do work for flats but the cleanup when you change tires is very difficult. You’re trading convenience of fixing the flat now for more work later but it should get you out of a bind. A plug kit is more difficult to use in the moment, but there’s no cleanup when you replace the tire. Sounds like a fun trip! Stay safe. Can’t wait to see the videos.

Consider buying a 5 gallon propane tank ($50) from Costco and an adapter hose for your stove. Refilling the tank is very very cheap. PS Costco also has 2 bear spray cans for $50

Hi! I would like to give my opinion about the slime tire repair. I wouldn’t use it. I recommend getting a tire repair kit and a plug-in 12 volt air compressor. The tire repair kit will come with the tools needed to repair and a number of plugs, which may be helpful if you get more than one flat tire. There should be videos on how to use the repair kit. A situation I had in Colorado last year, I ran over a piece of wood laying in the road and got two flat tires. I had a rechargeable air compressor which worked long enough to repair one tire. Luckily I had a temporary spare which got me back into a town I just left to get air to repair the second one. I now carry a 12 volt compressor and the rechargeable. The rechargeable is great for maintaining air pressures. Another reason to have one, and an air pressure gauge, is to maintain proper air pressure in your tires. You can get the repair kit and 12 volt compressor online. I would like to add, those plugs are temporary. I found out recently. My situation happened last September and one of the plugs did start leaking last week. Even though a plug kit should take care of the puncture, as long as it is repairable, it’s a good idea to have it properly repaired later. Mine was done with a plug patch. I hope this was helpful. Take extra windshield washer fluid, many of the roads you will be on are dirt/mud and you may be cleaning your window every few miles.

If you're wondering about sustainability, it costs more energy to make and remake glassware than for ex. plastic. just look it up. It's a problem yes, but it's really not currently energy nor resource saving. Also, glass breaks, your metal containers don't, and there's less weight. Didn't quite catch the "thing" with this coffee shop and their idea. What was their thoughts and idea? On another subject; I think a friend of mine will really like your build and setup. You're probably gonna have a great trip.

That's a long road trip solo. My daughters and I made the same trip from Florida in 2009 and loved it. We didn't camp, but stayed in motels. Don't forget to bring a sign for the Watson Lake sign forest. We did and it's there somewhere.

I would add a bug suit to your clothes. If you run into black flies, you can thank me later. I have never found any bug repellent that works with them. You will also encounter mosquitos that are larger than many small countries air force.

get a real tire repair kit - a tire plug & reamer tool. then get a tire guy or mechanic to show you how to use it. its easy. you got a tire pump rt ? one that plugs in. get some Avon brand Skin So Soft and Off Mosquito repellent. bear spray might be wise too.

You will find how naive and silly you are about this trip : It won't be cold , there are plenty of fuel stations ( you just have to top up your tank whenever you can to be on the safe side) You can get hot water and coffee at any service station plus usually the best cinnamon buns , Mosquitoes and black flies may be your only problem , there are plenty of places to boondock so you do not have to stay at campsites , the trip is not a big deal , tens of thousands of people do it every year on every type of transportation pedal bikes , motorcycles , huge RV's , and yes just cars.

@@kenmaxwell9435 Hey Ken, you’re correct about EPA being a source of info on that video. That was a short video and is why I chose it. It basically states the same thing as the others do but were much longer. That’s fine if it works for you with topping your tank off. I would rather be on the cautious side myself and avoid any damage to the fuel system that could cost $$. As one comment stated, there’s plenty of fuel stops up north. I never have added as much as you say you do before I stopped topping it off years ago. Best to you and happy trails!
