Could you do maybe an in-depth video on headphones? The ones you mentioned look fine but I also read the more ohms the better I need headphones to hear my drum triggers so I want to make sure it all sounds good especially if I try to use them to mix music

What would you recommend for a midi keyboard to play and record the drums and virtual instruments?

When I finally decided to get into working with GarageBand middle of last year I got the Scarlet Solo studio bundle. Very easy to set up and it provides the interface, headphones, condenser microphone and cable to connect it to the interface all for a very good price. Granted the microphone and headphones are not very high quality but imho better than what I would expect for the price. I also got a Shure SM58, a pair of Shure SRH440 headphones, a boom mic stand, a Rode PSA 1+ studio arm (mounts nicely on the desk I work on) and a Shure pop filter. I've only been recording vocals and the condenser mic that I got with the interface does quite a good job, but sometimes I use the 58 for the "58 sound" and it can be used hand held. I really like the Air mode on the mic channel of the interface and the Direct Monitor is good to have. One issue with recording the 58 is being dynamic the preamp has to be turned up rather high so I contemplated getting Cloudlifter but they're relatively expensive and I don't need the extra 25 dB all that often.

That’s a great setup! Personally, instead of getting a cloudlifter, I’d grab a higher gain preamp like the Warm Audio WA12. That will give you some nice subtle saturation too

Just had a quick read about it, amazing bit of gear. 71 dB is way more than the 25 dB Cloudlifter gives and lot more features on top. Only issue is here in Oz the WA12 Mk II is just under AU$900, lot more than the US MSRP of $469 which currency converted would be AU$715. We get robbed here. Still, maybe one day.

Yes, I looked into this a while ago and discovered all modern Macs have excellent (audiophile-quality) audio-output circuitry.

This is really late but I recommend Behringer Uphoria interfaces. The really small one(s) I don't feel are as worth it than the bigger ones, though. I used to use a small one with one mic input and one instrument input. It was super cheap to buy and worked, but nothing that great about it. I now use the 4 input "404" one and I easily prefer it over my friend's Scarlett equivalent. IMO Scarlett interfaces are overhyped and overpriced.

I bought the DT-770 80 ohm you recommended a while ago and I love them. They have some leak so they are most optimal for mixing, but.. if you record on moderate volume they work fine. I use Behringer u-phoria umc204 hd soundcard and it's even cheaper than the Focusrite. It's worth to check out cause it's also a good budget card. Thanks for all the work you do for us! I hope it pays off for you ☺

@@redlightclinicdrummerSorry! On louder volumes the sound leak through which some find annoying when recording vocals (You hear the headphones sound in the microphone) I use them for both mixing and recording but i keep the volume down when recording vocals. Overall great headphones.

So I went for the Beyerdynamic DT770 250 ohm and im not sure if they are completely compatible with my interface and laptop. Im using a pre sonus audio box on a MacBook Pro MK1 and id say the sound quality is slightly underwhelming and has little bass. Do I need to get a headphone amp to maximise the sound quality? or should I have got e for the 80ohm with my MacBook? Appreciate the videos also, they have been very helpful! Thanks

Greets. I performed a mixdown using my extremely accurate AT40x headphones and the result through my speakers was a very disappointing, bass-light mix - such that I turned off ever trying to mix through headphones again. It could be that the reason Colin is getting good mixes with the DT770s is precisely because of what you describe as underwhelming and little bass. If they are soft on the bass, a good mix in these headphones may translate into a much healthier bass in the real world than my accurate cans did. I'm intrigued. If one can make good mixes with headphones that would solve A LOT of the problems around monitoring, like the typically considerable size and expense of monitors as well as sound treatments required to flatten a room 'n' all that jazz. I'll be looking to see how you go mixing with your DT770's when I get to those videos but in the meantime, I would encourage you to at least give it go as you might be happily surprised. Here's hoping ; )

The DT 770 Pro is wonderful for mixing. Do you recommend any sort of preamp for recording prior to the interface? I'm using the Focusrite 2i2. I've seen that some people use a preamp. I have a little Pyle preamp I can use. I tried it but it didn't seem to help much.

I definitely don't think you need a preamp when you are starting out. And if you do get one it needs to be a BIG upgrade from what you have built into your Focusrite (which are are super clean preamps), so I wouldn't use your Pyle one. The benefit of a preamp is that it bakes in a little bit of saturation into the signal, which can add a little more fullness to the recording. There are ways to do this for free inside the mixing process with analog style plugins and saturation (I talk about this in depth in my EASY Advanced Mixing Techniques Course). That said, if you really want to play with it, I'd grab the Warm Audio WA12

Do You really need a Microphone if I'm just recording myself playing my electric Bass guitar along with a backing track? I just want to record myself playing Bass along w different backing tracks ,with my bass running straight threw the Audio Interface Etc. I just can't see why any kind of Microphone would be needed if I'm just playing bass only threw a Audio Interface & laptop & not singing or playing any kind of a acoustic instrument that wouldrequirea Microphone ,but I don'tneed to mic any other instrument & not doing any kind of vocal sounds nor am I laying down any vocals! Also ,I would be the only one able to hear the sound of music coming thru my headphones ,so my question would be what would I be able to record using a Microphone? I HAVE A MICROPHONE ,but just can't see where the use of any microphone would be needed if I'm just playing bass through the Audio Interface while listening to the music via my headphones playing in my ear only. I owned a set of Roland Monitors before my studio was broken into and they took almost everything I had aquired for all my studio recording needs including all my software ,the monitors ,my computer I had eveything stored on including several recordings I did for other groups ,a few amps ,infact about the only few things they didn't find were my Audix Ohm2 Microphone's ,my Yamaha Stage Custom drums ,hardware ,cymbals & pedals ,didn't get my Gibson acoustic or my ,bose sample/Beat machine and a set of dJ digital mixers & left my Technique Turntables ,but they busted all windows ,stuck a knife in my TV screen. It was a terrible thing to see as soon as I opened the door after being in ICU for over two weeks and in the hospital almost 1 month from a auto accident they had to use jaws of life and flew me by helicopter to the closest level 1 trauma center ,so I've been slowly building it back up little by little. BTW SORRY ,I didn't mean to get off subject ,but it eats me up everything I think about it lol. Anyways Any help from anyone that knows the answers to a few questions, It will forsure be very helpful to me & I really do appreciate you taking time to help inform a fellow musician. I appreciate it! Okay so we talked about what could the reason for a Mike if you're not recording anything acoustic or any vocals. I just want to start recording my w my 4 & 5 strings running directly from my Bass to a Audio Interface & Laptop, again My laptop is a older Sony Vaio w Windows XP I believe, so If you could provide the name of another way incase my won't work ,If I do get another laptop could you tell me a good one that's expensive in comparison to other Laptop's. I'd rather have a Laptop or computer ,but if they're to expensive ,I heard you mention a tablet and I believe you said it was a IPad Pro ,but I noticed you had a piece that you plugged into the side of it and it run over & plugged in the Audio Interface & if you could give me a estimated price for everything as far as the "IPad Pro" & the thing you had to plug in it so you could connect it to the "Audio Interface" so I can add it up to see how much it's going to run ,I would appreciate that a lot. G'day mate! Sheesh, ain't you been in the wars?! Sorry to hear about the thievery; and that, after a stint in ICU from a car crash?! Wow, I hope you're doing well now and getting back on your feet after all those body blows ... But to answer your questions: you're right, you don't need a microphone to record your bass - BUT - GarageBand is Apple-only software my friend: you can't get it on any other platform, including Windows PCs. But like your microphone, you don't need GarageBand to simply record your bass, either. Since you're in Windows XP and likely 32-bit at that, the first place you should look is any bundled software that might've come with your audio interface. Failing that, you can at least get started with Audacity, which is a freely downloadable, cross-platform, basic sound editor. Just run the search-string: "Audacity for Windows XP" in your web browser. If your audio interface works with your Kindle, you could try MixPad, which is a basic, free multitracking app for Kindle Fire. If you want to access the amp sims in GarageBand, the cheapest way in is with an iPad. The good news here is you don't need an iPad PRO to record and muck around with your bass-lines - a basic iPad will do just fine, for about US$450 brand new. But you should know that GarageBand for iPad is a bit different to the desktop version we're working with here. "Pete Johns - Studio Live Today" KZbin channel was dedicated to GarageBand for iPad although just lately he's also looking at Logic Pro for iPad. You can also run GarageBand for iOS on an iPhone, but that would be a dearer solution than an iPad and you'd have a much smaller screen to look at. To get into the desktop, MacOS version of GarageBand we're working with here, your cheapest way in would be a new Mac mini - starting at 600 American bucks - assuming you have a monitor, keyboard and mouse lying around - otherwise you might as well pop a cool grand on a new M1 Macbook Air. You could save some money with an Apple refurb or second-hand, but unless you know Macs well, you better make it at least an M1 to stay current, as Apple are phasing out Intel Mac support. If you don't care about future-proofing, I can recommend a 2019 slim iMac (in 2023). You can go a little further back with iPads but make sure you check-out Wikipedia's iPad article to ensure you get a device that supports the current iOS version, otherwise you may not be able to download GarageBand at all.
