When I was a machine tool operator at a B&S back in 70's I had the opportunity to work in the machine tool division gear section. I remember we used a machine that would shave the gear and then after heat treating I would hone the gears. Check them for run-out and all that then and not least I would match any two gears that would be mated by the amount of decibels they recorded in a sound proof booth. There was a lot more to than what I am mentioning here. Your video brought back memories. Thanks
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 5 жыл бұрын
You are correct, that is how it was done in the old days. They hobbed, heat treated, and shaved, correcting for distortion. Now most gears are ground after heat treat and with CNC type machining, better alloys, and better control of heat treat, some steps are eliminated and quality and profile accuracy are greatly improved.

Fascinating look at one of the ways 'stock' road racing cars are prepped in subtle but important ways. In addition to the improved cooling, reliability, and shift action, I'll bet this procedure is worth about 3-5 hp when the gearbox internals are really spinning up a storm in there. Thanks, Paul.

Nice, I haven't messed with a lot of car transmissions (although I had a super T-10 I bought for a 73 Corvette I had) but I set up a lot of Harley transmissions and for the last 11 years I've been getting into setting them up around road racing standards, I've been using an electrical insulation paint to coat the insides of the cases to keep the lube from wanting to cling to the inside of the casing, I'm gonna check into the Teflon coating trick, where do you send yours to for coating?

You could use the new hollow shaft to constantly provide oil to all the gears or rolling bearing just like you would do on a crank shaft. It would also be interesting to see how well the synchro rings match with the gears. And is the tiny needle bearing sufficient for the lateral forces on shorter gear shaft? Thanks for the very nice video
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 5 жыл бұрын
Actually most automatic transmissions use pressurized feed oil thru hollow shafts. It's all been done before. Problem is you need to run a pump system. These old transmissions don't have any. Most of the newer manual transmissions and some older ones we convert run speed gears on rollers. No issues.

Always looking for ways to eliminate drag and heat (as well as vibration and noise) when it comes to my `73.5 International Scout II. It's a 4200# truck w/aerodynamics of a brick! LOVE my T19 and sure would like to add to its lifespan of possible. Don't know much more than I'm never using anything but GL1 in it, so gotta ask, can this trick be performed on an IH T19? Any chance the upgraded shafts are out there or what's an estimated price to have it done to the shaft and who* would do the machining? The PTFE coating has me wondering about differentials as well. When I was 15, I learned the 5 HP trick for painting under the valley pan so oil flows smoothly. Only makes sense. Thanks for the awesome demonstration!

Just recently attended a webinar about Teflon seals. I don't know if a Teflon seal is available for the tail shaft of either the Muncie or the T-10/Super T-10. If you could swap over to them it would be a great improvement. Teflon seals are installed over a dry shaft, the seal area would be cleaned of any oils where the seal rides . An installation tool is recommended to get the seal on straight. The Teflon seal actually transfers particles from the seal to the shaft filling in any minuscule voids in the shaft and the life of the seal goes way up. Best thing is that after the seal laps itself in, the seal dimensions never change so a wear groove is never worn into the shaft. If the shaft is oiled during installation, the seal may never seat or take forever to seal. . Thing is, does National, Chicage Rawhide and other manufacturers produce Teflon replacements? .I have been using Viton whenever possible vs Buna N and the results have been excellent. Thanks for posting all this info. I love the polished gears and the Teflon coated case interiors. My 2 cents.
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 5 жыл бұрын
They don't make Teflon seals for extension housing applications. You have to be careful with Teflon. Unless you are using hardened components, teflon seals will actually eat up the yokes and shafts they run against.

I haven't pulled the side cover for it yet to see the condition of the gears but had a couple of places that do manual trans tell me the trans was built by Borg Warner for AMC at their specs the standard T-10 gears wont work if I can rebuild it and restore how much do you think I can get out of it? Looks to have the original shifter for it also the handle is gone its date coded for 67 and 68 would of came out in the AMX'S what they told me off the tag for it. Keep up the good work !
