Old school mechanic here, I have tryed other brand name comfort grip ratchet from Matco, Snap-on, Mac tools , husky, Craftsman's, the list goes on but overall there ok. Lol. But when I decided to purchase the fix head Gearwrench comfort grip drive set. OH MAN! The handeling and performance of the tool was AWSOME! So I went and bought the flex head locking drive ratchet set as well. Even better performance. Especially on the flex head when changing out oil filters on BMW and Mercedes, the flex head give you that flexibility when unfastening the oil filter. By far hands down Gearwrench did a phenomenal job on the comfort grip drive ratchet. But hay that's just my opinion. Overall cool review 😊👍

At the prices of the 90T ratchets currently, they are getting close to tool truck prices. I’m not sure why Gearwrench is targeting that price range. Gearwrench has a nice niche market in between cheap and tool truck.

Appears to be some sort of a tool truck so everything is marked up I'm sure. Seen some of koon truckings videos and even Milwaukee is way more than u find at home Depot or any general store.. and most contractors go to a commercial supplier and get discounts so these prices seem astronomical to me.

I’m a DIY’r and I have a lot of GW for me it’s a good quality. Better than the current craftsman products I do have a lot of USA craftsman stuff though I worked at Kmart in high school when Kmart first carried craftsman and I spent a good portion of my pay check on hand tools on Black Friday a couple of years in a roll.

Everyone in my shop, including myself, pretty much use the gw 120xp flexhead ratchets as go to ratchets. They wear out over time and are not the easiest to warranty out, but a replacement full set on amazon is a little over a hundred bucks... hard to beat! I have crappier ratchets with lower tooth count if I feel i really need to break something loose with a ratchet that's on there super tight and don't want to sacrifice my 120xp, but I tend to go for a hand wrench or breaker bar usually as the situation allows.

I have to say I don't see much difference in day to day use between 80, 84 & 88 tooth count ratchets I keep on my cart. I tend to use snap on the most because it's easiest to have rebuilt since our matco guy quit. I do think gearwrench is just as good for a much lower price.

I like those Sunex pliers. The ratchet, ehhh.... Depends. Are you buying new or as an upgrade to something? I do not own the Gearwrench 90 tooth. I feel anything over say 72 tooth or so is quite good. I would not personally upgrade from an 84 to the 90, but I might buy the 90 over the 84 if I needed one. Thanks for showing the internals.

90 teeth are great in a ratchet. My first was a titan ratchet that I’ve seen rebranded by other companies it’s fairly nice And of course I have the hated icon 90 that since I filed the back of the pawl has worked flawlessly. But my favorite 90 tooth is by far the Mac axis no quite smooth as the snap one but it’s smooth enough and feels so solid. I will try one of the gearwrench tho.

Why go to a 90 tooth ratchet? I used to sell tools for a living (among others Force, King Tony and KT Pro) and from numerous test and experiments I conducted with customers as well as with co-workers I can say that a 72 tooth ratchet has the best value for money without sacrificing really anything. Because how many times a year are you in a situation that 5 degree arc swing is too much and you need 2 or 4 degree of arc swing? Especially when you also have 12-point sockets bringing the 5 degree arc swing down to 2,5 on a hexagonal bolt. My most used ratchet is a 50 tooth/7,2 degree arc swing Gedore 1993-U2. That thing is smooth as butter and works every time.

I have the GW 84 tooth. I have handled the 90 and 120xp stuff and I in my opinion they are not an improvement. The issue is that the higher tooth count still has excessive backlash. I don't care how many times it click, how quick does it engage whe tightening. There is still to much tolerance stacking in the head of the ratchet. They aren't maximizing the potential of the higher tooth count. My Snap On 80 tooth has less backlash and slop than any ratchet I have tried so far. Im not a Snap On fan boy, I actually kind of dislike like company. But they have the best ratcheting action in my opinion.

That 9 - 0 pawl looks identical to the one in my Tekton 90-tooth ratchets. Same color, same markings. I think the gear/anvil look the same as well. If these are made in the same factory, that's not a bad thing, the Tekton ratchets are very strong. However, it does beg the question... Why pay double for the GW 90-tooth over the Tekton? Especially when Tekton offers a solid warranty.

the only benefit to that is warranty... there isn't anything on the gw truck you can't buy on amazon or tooltopia for usually quite a bit cheaper. That being said, we had a gearwrench truck come to our shop for quite a while, but he wouldn't really warranty a lot of stuff like locking flexhead mechanisms breaking or ratcheting wrenches switching direction under torque. So what's the point of spending more and still not getting warranty?? Obviously that's going to very from driver to driver, but ultimately gw tools are usually pretty cheap to replace and work OK

Single pawl 90T vs.the dual pawl 120XP: the 120XP uses dual OFFSET pawls and a 60-tooth gear. The pawls are offset by the width of half a tooth, so there's always one pawl engaging the gear. It's a very smart design. The 90T ratchet uses one pawl against a 90-tooth gear. So the gear on the 120XP is stronger because there are fewer, larger teeth. The dual pawls are not quite as large as the single ones, but they aren't half the size, either, since the head is thicker to accommodate the extra space the pawls need. All-in-all, there are no strength issues with the 120XPs. I don't know why GW released the 90T ratchets. Why would you opt for a gear with smaller, weaker teeth over the 120XP with larger, fewer teeth AND 30 more positions AND a smaller arc swing? Their decision confuses me. But I'm no marketing genius. Maybe they're not, either.
