This set is only appropriate for maintenance level chasing buggered threads, or a I gotta do it cause I gotta do it case . What you are calling a taper thread tap is actually called a through tap or a through hole tap. The only difference between it and a plug tap is the cone on the through tap is to center the part in a loose fitting tapping jig, once you get to the minor they are the exact same. You got the plug tap name right but the pitch lead is the same. Spiral fluted taps are for chip clearance, it has nothing to do with the hardness of the material (substrate and coatings have to do with material compatibility). There is no way in hell that chips are just going to fall out just because it's a through hole, the more the length to diameter ratio gets challenging it's just going to pack and a straight flute will pack faster than a spiral flute will. Thread engagement a function of the minor diameter you choose to drill the hole diameter to and the spec of the thread, the flute geometry of the tap has nothing to do with that. The ratchet is a double edged sword, great if you are in a confined area and it works for you, but horrible if you need to retract to break the chip and go back and forth, flip the switch, back flip the switch forward of course if you don't have clearance issues. You did get the metric pitch and threads per inch correct, which surprised me, but the pitch is to the pitch diameter and not the crest. What is the taps and dies made out of? M2, M42, M37? For chasing threads and a non coated tool M2 is fine (if the grind is good). If it's "carbon steel" it's bottom barrel stuff. For the love of god don't tell people you can just hand palm some random tap wrench and get straight new threads, that's absurd. Please use some sort of tap guide that is somewhat concentric to the hole you drilled if you are making new threads. IMO the best taps on the market is from Emuge, but that is way over kill for an maintenance level kit. Aren't machinist fun people? I know, I'm just messing with ya.

Very comprehensive video on the Gearwrench tap and die set. The Irwin 117 piece set has a 41 piece drill and extractor set included in the piece count so you are getting a lot more taps and dies with the Gearwrench set for a whole lot less money.

Thank you for mentioning that. I can't believe I forgot to mention the drill bits in the Irwin set. The thing to note is that the bits in the Irwin set are an alphabetical index, so it's the right ones for drilling taps holes.

I'm intimately familiar with both sets. I can tell you from first-hand knowledge the Gearwrench set is superior. So much so that it's evident just by looking at pictures of the Irwin tap wrenches, so anyone can tell.

@@CoyleTools Curious what makes the taps better? I've heard the opposite and I think project farm rated the Craftsmans and Irwin a lot higher than this
@CoyleTools
@CoyleTools Жыл бұрын
@@jonathangaliano2617 The superiority is more in the tap wrenches, die holders, tap collets and size range than in the quality of the taps. And the much lower cost. Every brand of tap breaks if used improperly and many people don't know how to use them properly. Irwin makes many other brands of taps and dies. They made Snap-On up until a couple of years ago, they made Matco and Mac sets, too. Perhaps the best testimonial is when someone in a shop buys the Gearwrench set and everyone else in the shop starts borrowing it instead of using their own because they like them that much better. I have a ton of respect for Todd at project Farm and he provides valuable information. I've noticed that some of his tests aren't true apple-to-apple comparisons and he tests to the point of failure, which isn't necessarily how you will or should use tools in real scenarios. I haven't seen the video you're referring to, but I'll guess one of his tests was to see how much he could torque a tap before it breaks and see how much the tap and die threads wear. These may be useful pieces of information, but may not be true indicators of quality or superiority/inferiority.

I'm going with irwin, craftsman, then this GW, the best thing in this set is the reversible wrench. When it comes to bolt 🔩 slop , craftsman 75 or irwin is bigger bucks. Note: I would also prefer a thread chaser separately and not use tap and die for existing threads

What is difference between matco and gearwreach tap and die set other name and price?
@CoyleTools
@CoyleTools Жыл бұрын
Matco has a unique tap wrench that reverses using it's handle instead of a switch and they include a drill bit set, so the taps and dies don't cover the same range as the Gearwrench set. I'm not familiar with the Matco set first-hand and don't know anyone who owns one, so I can't say anything about the quality. It lists on their web site for $534.95, so it's about $100 more than the Gearwrench set.

@@CoyleTools what made me kind of come up with that conclusion is that while Snap-on does sell Chinese stuff they do Market their Hardline tools as made in the USA and I would consider tap and die set's Hardline, now for them to do so they had to supply their own packaging along with the drive tools in the kit because while Irwin did make their tap and dies in the USA they're Drive tools are made in China and here recently Irwin's going under some kind of change because I see on some website the whole kit it's starting to say made in China instead of specifying like it did before and I noticed on their own website they're changing the pictures and the u.s.a. can no longer be made out on the dyes in the kit like you could before.
