I am taking my GED RLA next month and this was incredibly helpful! The tip that helped me the most was how it doesn't matter which essay you pick because there isn't a right or wrong essay to choose. I was a bit stressed if I might pick the wrong one, but hearing how they only want to see how well you can organize and articulate your arguments made me feel much better. I am going to check out this channel's other videos right away. Thank you to Light & Salt Learning for this super helpful video that gave tips other channels didn't give ❤

Hey how long it took you to get your GED. I need to get mine in 1 month my job is asking for it.
@LightandSaltLearning7 жыл бұрын
Real Life Vlogs, How long it will take you depends heavily on your reading comprehension levels and algebra skills. Many people who are strong readers pass the Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts with no study at all. If you do not pass any of those 3, the problem is probably that you are a slow reader, have a limited vocabulary, or do not understand what you read. As for the math, it too requires a good reading comprehension level because It's heavy on word problems but It's mostly an algebra test. Depending on your exposure to algebra, it could take anywhere from hours to months to master the types of math problems on the GED. If you want a better idea of how long it will take you personally, go take the GED Ready practice tests from GED.com. Your score on those will give me a very good idea of just how much studying you need to do.

What will be the best prompt for why physical education should no longer be a requirement for graduation?
@LightandSaltLearning4 жыл бұрын
That's not the style of prompts that you will see on the GED. If this topic were on the GED, it would give you two articles to read, one in favor of physical education as a requirement and one against. Then your prompt would ask you to write about which of the two articles you read WAS THE BEST SUPPORTED.

I have been working with a lot of different materials like the common core achieve ,and other McGraw-Hill Education books. i would love to see a videos on those books.
@LightandSaltLearning6 жыл бұрын
Our pointers for RLA: 1) Read, read everyday, read everything you can get your hands on. Become a READER. 2) Practice the essay repeatedly with the prompts from the GED testing service- get feedback on your essays from an instructor who actually knows the GED 3) Be able to identify the main idea of a passage and the supporting detail 4) Be able to judge how valid a written argument is by analyzing the evidence. As far as making videos on other publisher's books, I'm afraid we can't do that due to copyright issues. However, if you give us a specific topic (such as identifying the main idea), you'll be more likely to get a video response from us. Happy learning!

I will be taking my the language part of my GED this thursday, also my birthday. Not exactly the idea I had in mind to spend the day taking a test, but I am yet happy it will get done. Do you think it might be easier, since I hear advice that you should plan before you write, to maybe plan your essay in the box you write the essay in, and then work your way around that, editing it in your own words based on your method?? I love this video. I've watched it several times so I can remember the steps. I was just wondering if that might make it a step easier. I'm both excited and nervous. One thing that helps me have some confidence is knowing that whether I fail or pass, both are very normal. Either way, I will just celebrate the fact that I finally took it! I can try again if I have to whenever I'm able to, but I still want to try my absolute best of course! But knowing that still helps a lot!
@LightandSaltLearning5 жыл бұрын
You sure could plan it that way. Or you could plan it on your dry erase board. Do whichever you find easier. And yes, that is a very good attitude. Pass or fail, every time we take the test we get a little smarted about what's on there and what skills we need. The GED is a low stakes test in that way. I hope that calms you because the calmer you are when taking the test, the better you'll do! :)

However, I do recommend giving it a try if you aren't too nervous. The GED Testing service keeps that information very hush hush, but here's what they have made public: To simply pass a test, you need to score less than half of the questions right. The essay is weighted the same as 6 other questions, so it is very possible to pass your RLA even if you have a 0 on the essay. That being said, I recommend that you at least TRY to pick up some essay points.

@@melissasahagun5359 what a good plan. The ideal would be to think of three reasons. If not three, too. The first and most important thing is to have a really strong topic sentence that clearly answers the question in the prompt and 3 big ideas. For example, Article A makes the strongest case because it has stronger evidence, better sources, and is less biased. Or you could say Article B is best supported because it uses fact more than opinion, is more logical, and features convincing statistics.

Does the essay have any impact on education after the GED? I haven't seen anyone using and/or taking advantage after GED.
@LightandSaltLearning3 жыл бұрын
Great question. Although the skills demonstrated on the GED essay come up quite a bit in college and life (paraphrasing, summarizing, analyzing the strength of an argument, supporting your own argument with evidence, etc.), I've never seen another instance where an essay quite like the extended response comes up. Hope that answers your question!

What a kind of words do I need to use?
@LightandSaltLearning5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean. The IDEAS are so much more important on the GED then your word choice. However, some of your wording is important. For example, your thesis must clearly address the prompt by saying something like, "The second article gives the strongest argument because ____________, __________, and ____________. Another example of words that matter is using transition words at the beginning of each paragraph. Those are words like "First of all", "Additionally", "Furthermore", and "Finally".

Is the topic sentence and then intro different? When first explaining the prompt you gave out 3 different ways to go about it and then when you talk about the topic you say to only do 2 sentences and to keep it short?
@LightandSaltLearning5 жыл бұрын
The topic sentence is a part of the introductory paragraph. It us usually the LAST sentence of the intro. That being said, since the topic sentence (thesis) is the most important sentence of the entire essay, I always have students write it first. Since the body paragraphs are so much more important than the rest of the introduction, I recomend students do that next. Then, if you have time at the end, come back in and flesh out the rest of the introduction with one sentence summaries of each of the two articles you read.
@MsCankersore5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, took me a day to really absorb what was meant here, haha.
@LightandSaltLearning5 жыл бұрын
@@MsCankersore Yes, that one was a rush video I did for a student who was taking their RLA the next day. I haven't made an in depth series for the essay yet but there's a great series of videos on ged.com that outline the essay in great detail if you need more depth and clarity.
@MsCankersore5 жыл бұрын
Actually yours i felt provided a more clear explanation believe it or not so thank you once again. one thing im stuck on is the body. my teacher gave me a worksheet that says to write the evidence and stats to support the stronger of the two arguments but for the next paragraph to write the weakly supported argument and why its views are weak.
@LightandSaltLearning5 жыл бұрын
@@MsCankersore each body paragraph should follow this General format: First, write the topic sentence. Now I'm not talking about the topic of the whole paper like you did in the thesis in the introduction. The topic sentence is just what that one paragraph is going to be about: your first big idea. So maybe if your thesis had been, "Article A is best supported because it has a clear Central claim, more reliable evidence, and better logic" then your first big idea would be about the clear Central claim. Your first sentence in that first body paragraph should restate that first big idea. It would say something like, "Dr. Johnson's claim, that the new overpass will be harmful to our town, was clearly made." The next thing you will do is cite a piece of evidence from the text. Please remember to use your proper methods of writing about writing. Use quotes sparingly, mostly you should paraphrase, but always give credit to the author for their ideas. For example, you might say, "In the first paragraph of article A, the author minces no words but comes right out and declares, 'The overpass will be devastating to our way of life.'" Now it's time for your analysis. Don't just tell me what the author said, tell me exactly how that proves your point, in this case that a certain article makes a better argument. So you might say something like, " the authors clear decisive language leaves no room for misunderstanding him." Follow this basic outline for every piece of evidence you cite. Cite it but then analyze it. Don't forget that you can also talk about how the other article did not do that thing is clearly or as well. For example, you might say, " article B, on the other hand, was not as clear in it's claim." Then cite and analyze evidence from the other article. So basically 3 things in every body paragraph. Topic sentence, evidence from the text, your analysis of the evidence. Keep repeating the evidence, analysis until you run out of evidence for that point. Then you move on to the next body paragraph. Make sense?
@msbrown1027565 жыл бұрын
Ok I’m confused, which step do I write first intro , topic body, etc ?
@LightandSaltLearning5 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry. I have newer clearer videos planned for this in the future that take this one step at a time. For now, I'd say, the MOST IMPORTANT THINGs to get written are your thesis sentence and your three body paragraphs. I would prioritize writing those, then if and only if you have time, go back and finish fleshing out an introduction and write a conclusion if you have time.

What I don’t understand is ... how do I start off my introduction? Basically what I’m saying is which ever one I pick that has the best supporting How do I start off ? Do I say in my opinion or do I say in trait one what do I do ?
@LightandSaltLearning5 жыл бұрын
I would start with the thesis. That is THE MOST IMPORTANT SENTENCE in the whole essay. The thesis should be in the form "The Article ____________________ is best supported because ____________, ___________, and ___________." For example, "The Article 'Keep Tweens Away from Social Media' has the best argument because the evidence is specific, relevant, and reliable."
