Das Veilchen
Ein Veilchen auf der Wiese stand,
gebückt in sich und unbekannt;
es war ein herzigs Veilchen.
Da kam ein' junge Schäferin
mit leichtem Schritt und munterm Sinn
daher, daher,
die Wiese her und sang.
Ach! denkt das Veilchen, wär' ich nur
die schönste Blume der Natur,
ach, nur ein kleines Weilchen,
bis mich das Liebchen abgepflückt
und an dem Busen matt gedrückt,
ach, nur, ach nur
ein Viertelstündchen lang!
Ach, aber ach! Das Mädchen kam
und nicht in acht das Veilchen nahm,
ertrat das arme Veilchen.
Es sank und starb, und freut' sich noch:
und sterb' ich denn, so sterb' ich doch
durch sie, durch sie,
zu ihren Füßen doch!
In the meadow a violet stood,
Bent, alone, and unknown,
It was a sweet violet.
Then a young shepherdess came,
Light of foot and in a cheerful mood,
Along, along, the meadow along, and sang.
The Violet
Ah, thinks the violet, if only were
The most beautiful bloom of Nature,
Ah, only is only a short while
And my darling will pluck me,
And will she press me flat to her breasts,
Ah, only, ah only
For a quarter of an hour!
Ah, alas, ah! The girl came
And did not any attention paid to the violet,
She trod on the poor violet.
It dropped down, and died, and yet enjoys:
So, I will die, but I will die still,
Because of her, of her, anyway,
At her own feet laid!
A sweet melancholic poem by Goethe. Inspired some composers, Mozart included. I wonder what an earlier composer, John Dowland, ( English, Renaissance), would make of this material. In spite of my thinking that people should be nice to nice people, not the toxic ones, as the shepherdess symbolizes, it is still a very nice aesthetic melancholy type of poem.
