I seem to remember reading that the R1 and the R2 were surprisingly stable (admittedly mentioned to be more pleasant to fly when upside down than right way up). There used to be film footage on KZbin of a GeeBee crash, I think in Cleveland, immediately after a National Air Race in the 1930s. I think the story was that the owner had hired Jimmy Doolittle to fly the plane in the race. He did, and may well have won the race. I can't recall. Later that day, Doolittle returns the plane to the owner so the owner can fly it back to his home. The film shows the takeoff and an immediate vicious snap roll into the ground from perhaps 50 feet in altitude. All hands lost. The center of gravity in that plane was so far forward, it's a wonder anyone could handle it. Nothing quite like the hum of a big radial engine. The film might still be on here. I haven't looked.
