"It's My Life" is a song by the English new wave band Talk Talk. Written by Mark Hollis and Tim Friese-Greene, it was the title track on the band's second album and released as its first single in January 1984. It reached #46 in the UK charts, but did better in several other countries, reaching #33 in Germany, #32 in New Zealand, #25 in France and #7 in Italy. It was also a success in North America, entering the Top 40 in both the United States (#31) and Canada (#30). (Notably, it peaked at #1 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart.)

I bought the US EMI remix 12' version of this song before I heard it on the radio, because the guy behind the counter of the record store recommended it. Being 15 that year I was impressionable enough to listen to what he had to say because I thought he was a professional. 32 years later I still regard this as one of the Top 10 greatest songs to come out of the 80's. I still have that original 12' disc and listen to this song at least once a week just for the sake of hearing, what I call, the perfect pop song. I loved that No Doubt brought the song out in the early 00's but I love, even more, that even kids from No Doubt's era, in general, find Talk Talk's version much better. Try to find over on the right side of this page, the live version from 1986 in Montreaux. Amazing performance of the song.

+John Michaelson I am actually glad that I'm not the only one who feels the original wasn't done justice. No Doubt may have introduced a lot of people (like myself) to the song, but Talk Talk's version actually has feeling to it, without all that warbling Gwen is famous for. You can feel the desperation in his lines, he's looking for his audience to toss him a lifeline. Gwen's voice doesn't have a hint of vulnerability to it, imo; she sounds more like she's cornered her audience and is shouting at them. It doesn't have the same feeling to it at all. I guess I'm a sucker for somebody who is looking for answers rather than demanding them. :) But yes, I agree with the rest of the replies; this song is definitely a classic and timeless track that, when you think 80's, this song is one of the first that comes to mind.

The skies were actually blue, not a milky white haze riddled with chemtrails. People were actually connected to each other, not their phones ..soaking their brains in electro magnetic frequencies while driving, plugged in 24/7 not giving a shit about anyone or anything. The police were there to help people not beat them into submission. My how times have changed. Just glad now, I knew life when.
