I still remember Mark Hollis back in 1984 claiming in an interview (cheek in tongue though) that his aim was to write songs which one would still listen to twenty-five years later. Now this one truly has passed the test of time, as well as many others he wrote.

Probably one of the best and most beautiful songs ever written. The synthesizer sequences are superb, and the vocals are great. The 12" version is far superior to the single which has a very short (and disappointing) ending. I've listened to this song many hundred's of times, and never get tired of it.

Listen to the 'Colour of Spring' album. It has some of their best tunes on it...and for sheer 80s loud, Simple Minds - 'Sparkle in the Rain' album. I used to drive across London in my two-blue tone Mini with the dodgy heating and matchboxes protecting the uncovered ends of wires from touching other parts of the car, listening to Simple Minds and Echo & the Bunnymen at full tit from the 80s car stereo.

The 80s were quite the time to be alive in the west in many ways. I was a young kid then but I have a weird cultural echo of it in my memory, the way I suppose many people remember the zeitgeist of their childhood decade without many of the details, until comments like yours come along to fill them in.

I get the feeling Music will play a huge part in our mass raising of awareness to what we are expecting , the Christ consciousness , we are capable of so much more , we just need to realise it and take a bold step forward , before it,s too late. Love is all we need. Literally. . It's that easy , but seems so foreign now , Can't wait for someone to take the first step to a Better , brighter , more connected loving Future. Love Peace Always

"It's My Life" is a song by the English new wave band Talk Talk. Written by Mark Hollis and Tim Friese-Greene, it was the title track on the band's second album and released as its first single in January 1984. It reached #46 in the UK charts, but did better in several other countries, reaching #33 in Germany, #32 in New Zealand, #25 in France and #7 in Italy. It was also a success in North America, entering the Top 40 in both the United States (#31) and Canada (#30). (Notably, it peaked at #1 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart.)

I bought the US EMI remix 12' version of this song before I heard it on the radio, because the guy behind the counter of the record store recommended it. Being 15 that year I was impressionable enough to listen to what he had to say because I thought he was a professional. 32 years later I still regard this as one of the Top 10 greatest songs to come out of the 80's. I still have that original 12' disc and listen to this song at least once a week just for the sake of hearing, what I call, the perfect pop song. I loved that No Doubt brought the song out in the early 00's but I love, even more, that even kids from No Doubt's era, in general, find Talk Talk's version much better. Try to find over on the right side of this page, the live version from 1986 in Montreaux. Amazing performance of the song.

+John Michaelson You should go back to the record store and thank the guy for steering you in the right direction;-) By now, he's probably selling bagels or something; although vinyl is coming back (still hope for modern man)

+Phil Sartori Believe me, "It's My Life" has ended up being the only 80's song that remains as exciting today as it was back then. It's still in my Top 5 favorite songs of all time.

+John Michaelson I am actually glad that I'm not the only one who feels the original wasn't done justice. No Doubt may have introduced a lot of people (like myself) to the song, but Talk Talk's version actually has feeling to it, without all that warbling Gwen is famous for. You can feel the desperation in his lines, he's looking for his audience to toss him a lifeline. Gwen's voice doesn't have a hint of vulnerability to it, imo; she sounds more like she's cornered her audience and is shouting at them. It doesn't have the same feeling to it at all. I guess I'm a sucker for somebody who is looking for answers rather than demanding them. :) But yes, I agree with the rest of the replies; this song is definitely a classic and timeless track that, when you think 80's, this song is one of the first that comes to mind.

+DrkStrShadow Well said. Especially the description between Gwen and Mark's delivery of the song. Very good!

When you play this version on bass its actually in Eb standard. Which is why this version sounds spookier or more haunting

Yeah... I work at a DIY-store and they sometimes play this. But more often they the original and Such A Shame. They also often play Queen. Not just hits like Radio Gaga or I Want To Break Free. They also play not as big songs like You Don't Fool Me, Breakthru, Heaven For Everyone or These Are The Days Of Our Lives. Was really happy and surprised when i heard You Don't Fool Me for the first time there.

A superb extended mix. This is the definitive sound of the 80s. Most popular music of today (Bruno Mars, Adele, Pink, Justin Beiber, Pharrell - just to name a few modern artists I hate) is total shit. I love everything from the 1980s.

I was stationed in the middle east; and it reminds me of the distance from home, in the states. Calling my wife, at strange hours. Amazing how comprehensive our minds are to remember all of it. Like a time stamp / I'll hear it, and I am back -so far away------------------

25 at the time and living in CA driving highway 101 from LA to Santa Barbara in a 76 Chevy Impala and this song blasting on the stereo. .. I didn't know how lucky I was at the time. The skies were actually blue, not a milky white haze riddled with chemtrails. People were actually connected to each other, not their phones ..soaking their brains in electro magnetic frequencies while driving, plugged in 24/7 not giving a shit about anyone or anything. The police were there to help people not beat them into submission. My how times have changed. Just glad now, I knew life when.
