To my Gullah/Geechees… The name Gullah is in the Strong’s Concordance Bible dictionary as a Hebrew name. Look in the Hebrew Language section on page 1353 and you can see for yourselves. Yah’ll (we) are Hebrews. Our names were not mis-pronounced as Angola or Golas although some of our ancestors were from there. The Spanish and English called us Gullah or GuYah (In spanish the LL makes a Y sound) because they knew who we were. Geechees are the Yamasee or Yahmassee (Yah) (Yahweh) who were also Hebrews and were called (Maroons, Guale, Yamacraw, Creek Aborigines) by the Spanish. Cum-by-Yah, Ah-ha-Yah, We-Ben-Yah (We Son of Yah), Hallelu-Yah.

Contrary to popular belief, the Gullah culture and dialect/language is not really dying out. I cannot speak for Georgia, but in the urban and rural cultures around the Charleston, SC area, Gullah culture and speech are VERY much intact..

From what I learned there is at least 1 million Gallah people still alive and thriving in the USA. I just hate how “others” feel so entitled to always take what simply don’t belong to them!

I actually heard about this island in the narrative portion of a song "Sapelo" written and recorded by a Georgia native Larry Jon Wilson and was intrigued to learn more about the history and the culture of the people of the island. I also am aware of an agricultural project by Clemson University to rebuild the Sugar Cane crop on the island. Wish the residents the best to preserve their culture and the island.

Found out that I may be Geechee. My people were enslaved and lived in SC, NC, Kingsland GA, and right on the Florida line. All coastal.

It's still there land and if you folks allow Amish and quakers to keep their heritage, this shows what you feel about theirs. Shameful people and their selfish interests.

Shouldn't be a problem to have the cultural fabric of the real parts of our country remain intact. We just have to view with new eyes, we are the past present and future. Due the respect!!

@Nesheba Thanks ... I put it on my fb page and tweet; I'm forbidden to place it on some of my social network pages. I'm signing the petition....Lets all pray for this community and call on all of those in high places to help...this is just like Hilton Head Island...time for the Righteous to Unite....where is Al Sharpton? MalcomX tried to show us the way but no one is listening!

We have to preserve this place and these people. Once historic cultures are lost they're lost forever, it's happened so many places all over the world, and for what? More big houses, money, development-- a bunch of nothing of any enduring value. This is such an important piece of American history preserved here by this little community. If we can preserve it for generations to come this will be such a great treasure.

I have spent some time on this island. But my question remains, how can you have tourism when the ferry only allows residents to secure spots on the ferry. If they forced that to change, the jobs would follow.

When the rest of the developers drive the remaining Geechee people off their land, the state of Georgia will build a nice bridge from the mainland to the island. What a shame.

Then honor your Aboriginal and Indigenous People's Heritage" that is American and not "African." The Gulale, Ghulla Yamasse/Seminoles are one Nation. This isn't happening to them???? Why it happening to you???? Your land's are supposed to be federally protected, but if your going to to continue in the same Europeanized modes of culture then of course your community's are going to vanish and your youth gone. Embrace your indigenous American roots as well as your west African roots. That's where your protection is???
