Oh man, best quadra video yet! Awesome, thanks for the great vids. I'd love to see it run Virtus Walk through

I haven't had the chance to run properly A/UX myself, but the documentation is indeed incredible, and a lot of the knowledge there is still current. A lot of the built-in UNIX utilities, even though they are still part of all distributions, are very archaic, but learning them gives a lot of base knowledge to understand how things work today, and I have a lot of fun exploring. So, really, fantastic machine and I hope you have a blast exploring it!

Can’t wait to get ahold of a quadra 700 and get A/UX up and running. Great video! Thanks for sharing!

This is a very interesting project that you got going on. Would love to see a follow up on it. Also been trying to do something similar. But instead connecting my Mac Plus via serial to a linux machine host.

10:42 the A/UX terminal was not the granddaddy of the terminal in OSX. OSX kernel is Mach. A/UX was something. They’re different kernels so the terminals are also different. Hence not related

Fascinating.

I remember reading somewhere that you cannot upgrade A/UX's built-in System 7 past 7.0x as it will break Mac-unix hybrid apps. I do remember them saying that you can however copy over system extensions from newer Systems, like windowshade. For a while I've been curious if the Appearance Manager would work.

Yeah, I threw 8.0 on there a while back and bricked A/UX which is a bummer I haven't been willing to get back to

I like that there's other people out there like me connecting their VAXen and -11's to other old systems :) Good on you.

My life is based around three fundamental pillars: 1) The love of my wife 2) The love of my family 3) Connecting things to things

@@TrackZeroFutzin I enthusiastically agree with your priorities. :) For me, 3) is restoring old things and finding modern uses for them. Often this involves connecting things to things.

in your shell, before running twm, xeyes, etc, you could do: # export DISPLAY=:0.0 and it should be available in that shell for anything else you run. (you can omit 127.0.0.1 before the colon)

I'm a control freak, though. What if the bits decide they want to fly off to check out some other piece of equipment? You've gotta put them in their place.
@VK2FVAX4 жыл бұрын
Yep, but it may be an older shell. You may need to do a: "$ DISPLAY=:0.0; export DISPLAY"

I'd like to recommend the OpenGear IM7200 if you were after a good serial terminal server.
