Whether it's landing an axe in the middle of a face or kicking a half-orc in the dick twice in a row and squishing both berries, he's tracking a lot of objects in space and measuring distance, shape, size, and relative position in real-time. If you rate a Grog by his goodness at booky read-y, he no too good, but I think he may secretly be a _kind of_ genius...? Just not in a way that's really reflected on his paper, lol. I'd love if in one of these episodes they get stuck by a weird puzzle and he's somehow able to "idiot savant" his way through it and a character like Percy gets to look at him, like, "Wait... How did you..."

To be fair, she was super cheating. Witch Bolt only does increased damage on the first hit, not subsequent ones, and both Witch Bolt and Hex are concentration so she couldn’t actually use both like she did. There were also no concentration checks made to maintain spells. Matt was new to 5e and so was she, so not blaming anyone, but it wasn’t “impressive,” it was just using the rules incorrectly.

So considering they were all new and she was having the best time, it's ok that the rules weren't fully enforced here. The pandemic once again got in the way, because if they were able to bring guests on the show now, I'm almost certain that the Nein would have tried to recruit Shakaste, Calianna or another one of their long time guests (maybe Keg? She would have been a big help against Lucien, since she doesn't require magic to fight, though it would be very awkward for Beau).

I mean, he makes a mistake in this very episode when he says that death saves last until the end of the battle. PHB page 197 states that the second you gain hitpoints or stabilise, they get reset to 0. Not at the end of the battle. Not at the end of your next turn. Immediately. I'm sure someone will probably claim its a houserule or something though, but its a bit of an unfair one if it is.

@@Mephiston he could be using different rules. He uses a LOT of rules brought from Pathfinder. I don't know the rules of Pathfinder, but maybe it has a different ruling on death saves.

@@arztfritz3803 Pathfinder doesn't have death saves, you keep losing hp every turn until you're brought back to 0, and the check you roll is to see whether or not you lose hp that turn.Upon doing my research, I found that 4th edition had a death saving throws rule that was cleared after a rest, so that might be where it came from and mercer was just confused. Stuff like that is a good reminder to me that these folks are just a bunch of friends playing a game of d&d. They're not professionals, they're not infallible celebrities.

Honestly it's not that hard to do. The group I gamed with from grade school through college did spur of the moment things like this all the time. You just learn how to improvise as a DM, or you don't DM. DM's have to learn to be better at improv than any player does because you have to play EVERYONE ELSE in the game. From the shopkeeper at the end of the street, to the Stableboy at the Balor's eye inn, to the surprisingly not so shady guy that runs the pawn show across the street with 1 arm and a lot of war stories, to the old man and wife whose house is nearby and who act as the neighberhood butcher and herb and spice seller. You have to be the fit, greying at the temples sgt of the guard Edwin who regularly patrols the neighborhood in the evenings, and his 3 young guard recruits marcus, lawerence, and Hiloath who he has nicknames for and one of which is the brother to a notorious thief in the city. And that's just making stuff up on the fly. You just learn how to improvise stuff on the fly. Even matt mentions it a couple times, that frequently they played games where they had nothing planned and he just made stuff up on the fly and it just worked. He took notes as he went, and it creates spontaneous adventures that go in directions noone planned for but which were fun. He even talks about how to do it in episode 12 I thing. I recall listenting to that and was like. Yep, that's true, yep that's how you do it.

Both did an amazing job at their roleplay, but I'd say Felicia's was the best. Lyra is a very flavourful character, the kind that might annoy you to no end in real life but when seen from a distance is very enjoyable. That being said Mary Elizabeth's name and picture should have been in the title and thumbnail respectively as well.

Hitting an unconscious player with a melee attack is an automatic crit and causes two failed death saves. He got hit twice, so he should've had 4 failed death saves and died.

according to raw rules, when he fell unconscious, all attacks within 5ft. have adv and are criticals, so those 2 claw attacks that hit would inflict 4 failed death saving throws, and Scanlan would be dead. I respect Mercer's decision to let his teammates save him (because Scanlan did not make a stupid move - other than moving in close to dragon as a caster class, but I DM too and when you die, then you die :D

Loving the Lyra, Scandlan friendship. "He smells like sandalwood... and dismissiveness." 45:20 2:20:20 Disintegrate is high damage but it's a hit-or-miss spell. If something makes the saving throw on a disintegrated it takes no damage. That's the trade off.

To be fair, the wording of the spell is ambiguous on that point. Most spells are more explicit about whether the target takes no damage or half damage on a succeeded save. Disintegrate only states what happens on a failed save. It is a perfectly reasonable interpretation to read that to mean that it only has effect (does damage) on a failed save. However, it is not unreasonable to read its silence on successful saves as being that the target takes half damage, since that is the common result for non-cantrip spells. Matt's ruling may not be the same as the majority of DMs, but it is not an unreasonable reading of the spell text.

It was definitely when fighting K'Varn. Using his headshot to give his teammates advantage on EVERY SINGLE BEAM'S SAVING THROW was literally the difference between overwhelming victory and crushing defeat, especially with their glass cannon (*cough* Tiberius *cough*) playing hooky.

Sadly, the new beast master only gets a bit more utility, allowing companions to use the ranger’s bonus action. However rangers are still hampered by a hunter’s mark that doesn’t scale properly with level, but needs to be used for most of their “new” features. I truly wonder what ranger pc hurt the designers.

I mean, Laura's character Vex's favorite enemy, or most hated enemy I should say, is dragons. She mentioned it briefly in this episode if I recall. So I would probably say that it is safe to assume that her mother was killed by a dragon.

Whether the twins were right about this is being called in to question. All her favoured enemy expertise was built on that incident. If your saying that she would know than you've put the cart before the horse. She didn't have the knowledge at the time nor did she see the dragon with her own eyes. Unless she reevaluated her memories against her memories and assumptions she would still labour under a false pretense. So it isn't a safe assumption at all. The fact that Matt didn't back it up with new information for someone to question it is fairly damning however.

That horrifying moment upon rewatching that you realize Scanlan DIED here, but lived due to Matt still being unfamiliar with 5e. Praise be, Scanlan lives. (Any time an unconscious character takes damage it counts as 2 failed saving throws. So eating those two claw attacks was 4 fails... you only need 3 to die.)

Let's be fair. Orion got fireball's AoE wrong. At the Critical Role table, that isn't a large error. Someone gets their shit wrong at least once a session. When Orion realized he hit everyone, he said he didn't want to cast fireball. I agree he wasn't paying enough attention beforehand, but he did NOT intend to set the party on fire.

@@Maladjester He didn't say he didn't want to cast it, he said he wanted to shift it off to the side instead so he wouldn't hit the party but could still cast his fireball. If he had asked "will this fireball hit any of the group?" and then decided to either shift it or cast something else before he rolled, that most likely would have been fine. Which really isn't anything new for Tiberius though. I mean, he's tossed fireballs that hit Vax several times already before this, like in the Underdark during their fight with the Duergar King I think? May have been a different fight, but Vax was sneaking up towards their enemy and was getting close so he would be able to get a strong sneak attack or something big in, and Tiberius just suddenly flings a fireball right at the dude.

First time watcher: These two episodes were my favorites so far! Not only is Felicia hilarious, they constantly "yes, and" each other. With Orion it's so often a "well, actually, I..." and "If you insist, whatever" which creates tension within the group.

Then I use my last 4 sorcerer points and cast fly, then Greater Invisibility and move 50 feet away from here. Oh everyone of my party was also hit by all of this and they all died? I find it interesting that Matt says those fails persist after he's revived. Must be a house rule because the PHB says that for death saves and fails "The number of both is reset to zero when you regain any hit points or become stable."

DM's can't always remember everything in a book, even more so if they play/run more than one game as well.
