I think this is a great way to introduce new people to D&D as a role player and to have an idea of the flow of the game. But one should definitely not consider this a lesson on the rules themselves. Because there are too many liberties with the rules being taken. It is why playing with friends is important for brand new players.

Sophia Bogard I’m really enjoying these videos, I’ve never played this game, I’m in my 30’s and I’m starting to wish I had people to play this with. There’s a shop in my city where I reckon they pay this but I think it would be a bit weird for me to walk in and be like can I join?

@@briangallagher3106 Tell them you have no personal experience but want to play. Most groups are very friendly and the shop owners are there because they love gaming. They are not getting rich in the gaming/comic industry and snobby reactions are really rare. Do be prepared for the gaming style to be very different at every table and with each different GM, and most games will be very different from the groups of voice actors who populate Geek & Sundry. The shop you go to might not have a game running that's appropriate for a new player at any given time, but they'll probably be very happy to have you watch, and may know where or when you can find a game to join.

Attention New Players! This video contains rules and/or rulings by the DM that are NOT consistent with the Core D&D 5e rules found in the Player's Handbook. D&D is a game where individual groups can agree on "house rules" that they feel enhance the game experience. However, unless you will be playing exclusively with that group, knowing the rules as suggested by the game designers will be more helpful to you than learning one groups "interpretation" of the rules. "Starter Kit" the name, may give you the wrong impression that the rules presented here are either the official rules or a simplified version of those rules. What you are actually getting is Jason Charles Miller flavored D&D (which you may find delicious). Be advised that using these rules may conflict with those of another group or DM.

I am currently teaching two people who are new to DnD. Part of my process is to watch other DMs and how they guide newbies in a game, I'm a 40+ year player and want to stay current. I got maybe 15 mins into this second video and became so annoyed with that one guy on the bottom left i stopped watching. His interruptive behavior, and selfish actions were cringey. Then i thought, NO, this is the PERFECT example to let newbies know how to NOT act. Thank you for the video, going to look for more positive ones for example, you're a great DM and i dig your style. Between you and me? I'da found a way to weaken and silence him.❤😂

If you want to play rules lawyer, play ASL. Moving two men across the road takes longer than the OJ Simpson case, both in research, and presentation to the jury. Here's an easy start to a campaign: "The night is moist, so not wishing to invite a bad humor, you seek shelter at the local inn, but stop in at the adjoining pub. How would you care to proceed?" That's fluffy talk for: "You're in a bar. Whadya do?" "Sith though thou knowest welle thine owne audience, don't be a dick!" - Robert Recorde's Mother 1527.

You don't want players to think in numbers all the time. This is why Matt is such a genious, giving players a CONSTANT distraction from numbers. Of COURSE we still summarize how much HP certain monsters have (and they will be adjusted by Matt), but constantly talking about it and figuring out the mechanics of the game is counterproductive to immersion and roleplaying. If you want to see the numbers go up and kill big monsters, you can do this with DND, but you can also do this with any MMO(RPG) out there...

One correction though, according to the official rules a natural 20 does NOT necessarily mean a skill check automatically succeeds. The DC could theoretically be too high to succeed. Critical succes ONLY applies on attack rolls in which case they indicate a hit regardless of AC and usually apply double damage. Likewise Nat 1 only means an automatic failure on attack rolls - although the DM shouldn't be calling skill checks if even a nat 1 would pass the DC. The reason it's mentioned and used as in the video because critical rolls on skill checks/other d20 rolls is a VERY COMMON house rule. I even had to tell my DM (we play 3.5e together so 5e rules aren't his strong suit).

That's right. But it's not unheard of to do other things in a tabletop game that are not related to the game. Now, of course this is a show with microphones and live casting, which makes the game which has only one DM a bit chaotic and so especially at a start, as the gaming groups tempo is to be determined yet. They will get better after a few runs at it, I am sure of it. After all, this is how it's in any group game. Which might be the point of the show, too. Uuh.

Does the master make most of this up, or is there a written script with different reactions to what players do?
@littlesherlock2313
@littlesherlock2313 5 жыл бұрын
Script isn’t quite the right word. There’s a book with the map, the monsters, and the whole quest. The DM has liberty to edit any of this, and sometimes DMs make whole quests of their own design with monsters and treasure of their choosing. The DM tells what happens and makes judgement calls about how the quest is going based on the players’ actions and dice rolls. There is usually a description of each room to be read to the players and another description that is private to the DM and is only revealed to the players if they discover whatever it is through their actions. For example, the gold on that one gnome was not obvious so it wasn’t to be revealed unless the players actively sought it out.

The roleplaying comes once everyone is comfotable with the group. The players make the action happen for their own characters. It would be pretty lame of him to describe what a character under the players control does. Also yes, he is getting the new players and viewers comfortable with combat mechanics before getting into the nitty gritty dnd shenanigans.

I agree as long as he isn't excessive with the description. If it's too detailed then it takes too long.

I don't agree with the people above saying the 'roleplaying' comes in when everyone's comfortable. My DM describes everything ' Oh you got a natural 1 ? you go to strike with your blade but your muscle twitches and it causes you to miss' 'Oh you hit? (depending on damage) you jab your sword into his shoulder and now there's blood everywhere. or sometimes on my rogue i've literally cut peoples head off with a nat 20 ;)

Sixgun Symphony shared that it was from Module B1: In Search of the Unknown (1977 Basic D&D rules set). There are images online with the layout, but the physical map at the size in the video was probably hand-made by the DM or Geek & Sundry staff.

Having DM'd a lot, I'd have played the rolling of a '1' on initiative (by the Cleric especially with her -1 modifier) differently. Initiative is somewhat akin to reaction, in my view at least. A roll of 20 is always awesome and implies special performance which the player can enjoy. A roll of 1 is exactly reverse. Personally I'd have (possibly depending on my rolls) had the Cleric drop whatever is in her hand(s) and run away in fright, getting her to roll a d20 again to see how extreme her reaction (ie distance/mental breakdown) might be. A 1 is bad. Character trips on something, drops weapon, snags weapon, pees themselves, etc etc. Such things can make for a great laugh amongst the team and reinforce the idea that everyone, now and again, will suffer the fate of the Gods when playing, for good or worse.

I ran my first game as DM yesterday (second overall) with a group of 4 friends, with my own homebrew short campaign specifically tailored to teach both them and me the basics of the game with the help of online resources. Being a total beginner and having to do this for the first time made me super stressed because I wanted my friends to enjoy it - and not turn them away of the game. In the end, I ended up with a game where everyone's phone had been voluntarily put away, I could see the enthusiasm in their eyes when we wrapped up the first session and now they can't wait for more. I have Jason to thank for this, for being the paradigm of DM I emulated. He is so patient, explanatory and adaptive it's ridiculous. He rarely forbids them to do something and always goes with their flow.
