The battle was decided in the North, where the Spartan army had a HUGE high ground advantage, being able to fire down and slaughter the Romans in the North. They then swept down with that advantage. If the armies had been placed on the opposite sides of the center, the battle would have gone the other way.

I'm sure the spartan warrior would win against the roman 1v1 but maybe the roman are stronger as one unit.
