My main problem, among a show that is mostly one big problem, is: Now we are led to believe... they are making this guy, whom seemingly nobody knows, who has no retinue, notjing, King of a Land, that is now under a volcanic cloud and seems largely empty, by a 500 man army... that... knew how to go where from... whom? And the Orcs do... what? We do like Adar and his Orcs now mire than we like Galadriel and the elves and Humans... they are more understandable and likeable characters.

I disagree with his comments about them leaving the stone tower being idiotic. Even though they may have been able to hold out for a while, it was clear they would eventually be overrun with no place to escape to. Bringing down the tower was a good way of taking out a sizable portion of the Orc army all at once with no human lives lost. However, what they should have done after was to leave that area altogether and head for the nearest known settlement where they could sound the alarm and gain more numbers. With Orcs only travelling at night it would have been possible to stay ahead of them and possibly even find a more defensible position than a village.
@stephengibbons4771
@stephengibbons4771 2 жыл бұрын
Running away was what they should have done in the first place, absolutely. However, once they are at the tower, and the orc attack is only hours away....it is only sensible to remain there. Abandoning a slightly fortified tower to return to a completely undefended and indefensible village is tactically moronic.

This episode literally made my head hurt. Aronoir & the humans had no strategy such as creating a diversion while attempting a withdrawal or at least pitifully attempt to send a runner 🐎 for reinforcements. Conveniently Galadriel & the boys knew where to find them. Then there’s the birth of Mount Doom. Essentially an old man used a broken blade alike an enema to unlock the biggest episode of explosive diarrhea on Middle Earth. I know the actors are giving their all but the material is so bad, I’m wondering if these showrunner actually read Tolkien or watched the films and read the Cliff Notes. 😆

The duo's pitch for the show - which focused on a period in Middle-earth thousands of years before the events of the "Lord of the Rings" films - inadvertently aligned with the vision that J.R.R. Tolkien's grandson Simon Tolkien had for a series, according to the Journal. "Simon Tolkien had an idea of the show he wanted," a source familiar with the show's production told the Journal, "and they went and pitched it without knowing it." The younger Tolkien, who controls his grandfather's estate, was further impressed by Payne speaking Elvish and quoting the late author in their initial conversations

This show is a complete dumpster fire. I pretty much knew it was going to suck going in but I never dreamed it could be this bad. This pile of dog shit is now actually shipping a relationship between Galadriel and the guy who is obviously going to be Sauron. Are you shitting me? That dull thumping sound you hear is Tolkien rolling over and over in his grave. The writing and dialog in this show is worse than the lowest dreck you could find on the CW network. There are kids in elementary school that could write at a higher level than this. They have wiped their ass with Tolkien's lore and bastardized his characters at every turn. If someone had leaked the plot; the way known characters were going to be portrayed; and some of the dialog; from this show 6 months ago, they would have been accused of pulling a ludicrous false prank just to piss LOTR fans off. But it's all true. You couldn't make up any plot twist at this point that would be more ridiculous or Godawful than the actual show itself.

Halbrand actor has learned Black Speech.. I’m CONVINCED he’s very clearly Sauron. I just watch the show at this point to hope to see Galadriel’s face when she finds out her kingly boyfriend is the Dark Lord himself. Teehee. I’m #teamlavaflow and #teamAdar 110% Also, if Halbrand was from the South... why does NO ONE recognize him? Bc he’s the master deceiver himself. Shapeshifter extraordinaire who Adar seems to not even recognize... Probably because this is meant to be Saurons “fair form”... Not what I ever thought he’d look like.. But Charlie Vickers is adorable and I’m always a sucker for the bad guy. And since Halbrand is my fav character (with Adar a close second) it’s proof enough for me that Halbrand is fair formed Mr Sauron slowly and slyly creepin his way into power. And how on earth did Galadriel survive direct lava flow?? Her brother died from dragon fire .. so they aren’t secret Targaryens or anything. Again. MAKES. ZERO. SENSE. Love the recap and review 💕

Yup! Halbrand is totally HalRon - although I would not put it past the show-runners to delay the reveal in order to keep their dwindling audience guessing. They might dangle this carrot in front of our noses in order to lure us back when the second season will start. But it is very obvious that HalRon has a very dark secret indeed, and when Galadriel talks to Adar about such dark stuff as orc genocide and keeping Adar alive in order to make him suffer and grieve for his Uruks - who has listened in the shadows and pops up like a Jack-in-the-box? Yey, it's HalRon who may have poisoned Galadriel's mind, and probably not for the first time. While I love Adar's character, I have a real problem with the idea of a repentant and remorseful Sauron. While Tolkien actually wrote that Sauron might have indeed been somewhat remorseful after Morgoth's fall, he also wrote that Sauron was a coward who didn't dare to come to Valinor for his trial. I think that at the time of ROP Sauron had become so evil already that he was way past redemption. It feels a bit like trying to see the good side of Hitler, who had the disadvantage of not being able to assume an attractive shape like Sauron who apparently tries to look vaguely like Viggo Mortensen 😉

Adar knew how to force the existing volcano to erupt, using Sauron’s mechanism. The orcs knew what was up because Adar told them what they were trying to do. Then Adar secretly gave the sword to the old traitor, who snuck out during the battle and did as he was told. The orcs were chanting because they knew what was happening. So that all made sense to me. Otoh, I agree with you that the charge of the Numenireans felt forced. Sure, they would go to Ostirith, but not at full battle charge.

The idea that we should ever sympathise with the dark, the Orcs, the vampires and werewolves is the complete antithesis of Tolkien´s work. They are the manifestation of pure evil. THAT SAID, I am totally supporting them in this series...go figure. My concern is that this is all not a coincidence however, and that is almost more worrying. Is the idea of this series to completely subvert Tolkien´s original message (on a moral/philosophical/ethical level)? Ufff I’m conflicted. I think you can do that with Star Wars and with other franchises but surely LOTR is the battle of good against pure evil?

@sabineb.5616 2 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with your point of view. I absolutely love the character of Adar! And it's not quite true that this clashes with Tolkien's ideas. He was very conflicted about how he had treated the subject of orcs and their origins, and he tinkered with this subject almost until the day he died. His problem was that in his early writings he had used orcs mostly as dangerous hurdles which had to be mastered and as cannon fodder for his heroes, who could show off their fighting prowess without having to feel guilty about killing sentient beings. But when Tolkien matured he was increasingly troubled with how he had created his orcs. He said that every being with a soul was redeemable, which included orcs. But he didn't think that there could be something like good orcs, because their corrupted ways could not be changed. If you read all Tolkien has written about this subject, a character like Adar and his relationship with his orcs is not absurd at all. I think it's important to listen to Adar and his predicament. He and his Uruks didn't choose this existence, and they just want to live in their own space. We don’t have to agree with Adar. But what he has said isn't at all incompatible with Tolkien's Christian world view. As to other evil creatures like werewolves, wargs, dragons and the likes - Tolkien saw them more like animals, and therefore they were not in the same category as the various humanoid races who populate his world. And since animal rights were not as big a thing as nowadays, he didn't think that these creatures deserved our sympathies. I always wondered about balrogs, though. Unfortunately Tolkien never described them in great detail. We don’t really know if their were weird hominids or something else entirely. But today many readers complain that Gandalf killed the last of this magnificent and misunderstood species 😉

@@sabineb.5616 What Tolkien actually wrote doesn't support this show's concept at all. What Adar says is entirely incompatible with Tolkien's values and worldview, even in his later letters. There are no cases anywhere in Tolkien's works of orcs repenting. Gollum, yes. Boromir yes. Orcs never.
@sabineb.5616
@sabineb.5616 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikem9001 , I guess we have to agree to disagree about this. I think it is absolutely compatible with Tolkien's Christian convictions. But I want to point out that we don’t have agree with Adar, and what he said doesn't need to agree with Tolkien's opinions. But it was good that he had the chance to express his side of the story. And he doesn't talk about repenting at all! The way he sees it there is no reason for repenting. I also think that it's not much of an argument to say that there is no example of this or that in Tolkien's writings. That is not at all the same as saying something is not compatible with Tolkien's ideas. There isn't one single black elf in Tolkien's writings. But that doesn't mean that black elves are not compatible with Tolkien's lore! I think that they can be compatible with Tolkien's world, and I also believe that he would have allowed it. But he would not have introduced black elves in such a clumsy way as Amazon’s show runners, who just inserted randomly coloured characters in order to check certain boxes. Tolkien would have invented plausible back stories for Adar and others, which would have been far more respectful, and it would have added debth to these characters. But I disgress. I would have loved to know what Tolkien would have thought about a character like Adar. I think he would have been fascinated. More than anything else he was a consummate story teller. I am not at all pleased with what Amazon has given us so far. The show is so flawed that it might be more difficult for the show-runners to redeem themselves than for Adar and his orcs, or for Halbrand/Sauron, and there are many blatant inconsistencies with Tolkien's writings. But IMO Adar is not one of them.

I get the sense that the story is being drafted by committee in such a way that it CAN'T be internally coherent. (I got the same sense from watching S01 of "Foundation"... I don't have time to watch many streaming series and wonder if they're all like this.)

I'm sure the Human was told by Dark Elf to insert and turn the sword. Maybe Elf was hoping to wait till he cleared out his Orcs but told human to do it if they lost .. I like the water to volcano bit, orcs dig, water would activate a volcano, this was a good evil plan .... I dislike how can cross entire Lands and save the day without 5 minutes to lose before orcs kill everyone, maybe instead do realistic humans are climbing around Mt Doom trail to escape as orcs chase them and can see each other from long arrow range, but still days before orcs and close distance given humans are running, then Numerians come, that'd be pretty not this fight in the shire....

I admit that I didn't agree with your previous reviews - I thoguht you were too harsh and impatient. In my eyes Tolkiens books are also very very slow and I gave it to the show to start of in the same way. But I am so sad to say, that I fully agree with every detail of your review today and I feel let down by the show totally let down, because the overall writing is so bad, that even I (an easily satisfied viewer) get immediately aware of it. I also agree with the complexity of some characters being really nice and one of the view things that make this thing worth watching. Thanks for summarizing my thoughts so well. Let's hope, as you said, season 2 gets much much better.

I sometimes get the sense they just fed the source material they got the rights for into an AI algorithm. The writing and storytelling doesn't feel human or inspired. It's just beyond believe how this series turned out. The only positive thing I can say after 6 episodes: "Thank God that there are only two episodes left." (Edit: Ha ha you made the same joke at the end of your video!) Normally, you wouldn't want RoP to end and you can't wait for season two. How many people will think "Well, I'm just gonna pass and maybe binge it someday after all 5 seasons are completed?"

It's a beautiful-looking show. A little slow, though. I know it is a cliche, yet watching this episode I couldn't help thinking it suffers from every scene, act, sequence taking a bit too long. Just re-watched the Peter Jackson movies, and the combat is refreshingly quick and visceral by comparison.

Thanks for a great and fair review! I have to say, that this episode touched my heart for the very first time since the show started to stream the first episode! The character of Adar is great - and in many ways he is a better elf than the rest of the well coiffed lot - although Arondir has some charisma as well. But Adar expressed in very moving words what I have always felt about orcs and their origins. I was never happy about them being mostly a pest which needed to be eradicated and who were used as cannon fodder for the heroes. They didn't choose the way they are! And Galadriel was clearly standing with one leg on the dark side, when she talked about the necessary genocide of the orcs. My sympathies were with Adar, who doesn't seem to be innately cruel. He wanted a place where he could live with his tribe of Uruks and their way of life. It was very moving when he said that Uruks are sentient beings who have hearts and souls, too. And I absolutely want to see a few baby orcs now. They don't come out of eggs like reptiles. Orcs procreate just like the other hominids who live in Tolkien's universe 😉 At the moment I am reading a book about the history of the Comanche. I am not at all comparing the Comanche with orcs. That would be very silly. But their way of life was just as foreign for the European settlers, and the Comanche might've thought the same about the European folks. But the predicament of Adar reminded me of what I have read about the Comanche and their clashes with settlers with European origins. There were two factions whose cultural backgrounds and values were so utterly different that it seemed to be impossible to reach an understanding and a peaceful compromise, which would have made it possible for both factions to live and thrive. And both factions have committed many deeds of unspeakable cruelty. Adar reminded me of the last war chief of the Comanche - Quana Parker, who had a Comanche father and a white mother. She had been abducted as a kid after a raid of the Parker estate. When she was a teenager she became the wife of a Comanche chief, with whom she had several children. Quana Parker was someone who stood for both factions, although the Comanche were his people because he grew up with them. Quana Parker was highly intelligent, and he and his Comanche were often on the winning side of armed skirmishes. But he also knew when it was time to give up and end the armed conflicts. And he and his warriors actually managed to bargain for better post-war conditions for their people than many other tribes. Quana became an important business partner whose big house was always open for his tribe members as well as for many well known personalities of his era. Adar used to be an elf but he is the leader of his Uruks now, and he cares and stands up for them. I wonder what will happen to him...and we still don't know what all the fuss is about the evil sword which might be a key. Have I missed something? Theo didn't have it, because Arondir switched items. But what about the orc who flooded the caves and then paradoxically ignited Mt. Doom with water? Did he use the evil sword? And if so - how did he get it? Only Arondir knew where it was really hidden. Can it do more than setting volcanoes on fire? It seems to alter the minds of those who pick it up. As to the rest of the episode - you said it well. The writing and the pacing is still awful. There are so many wasted minutes and pretentious dialogues where nothing remotely interesting happens. This prescious time could be used for getting on with the story! The first season is almost over! The best I can say about this episode is, that it had a very touching moment with a flawed hero/tragic villain, and finally something of real importance happened!!

Arondir hid it but Theo spied on him. When Adar was fleeing, he switched the blade with an axe to mislead them. Not an orc but Waldreg used the hilt to open the locks. When the water fell on the subterranean lava it created smoke and turbulence and mount doom erupted

the timing during the first fight seems badly edited, when the elf closes the door with a log or when the the orks are run over by a burning cart. I wish just one big thing (like main characters getting saved at the last minute). I feel like the writers have forgotten the viewers aren't stupid. Or it's not just 13 yr olds who are watching. Many viewers are hard core Tolken fans & KNOW the story & characters. I hate that I'm NEVER surprised; not once. Not even at the reveal of the ax in place of the Sauron dagger. Yes, I was SO confused as to how the Numinorians knew where to go. Thought I missed something, but turns out the plot was missing something.
