This is my preferred method for making a wooden sword. Please note this is not created for HEMA practice or sparing, just fun!

Thanks for the comments and feedback. A few common suggestions have come up, so just to clarify: - Yes, the handle is round and should be oval to align with the blade. This is a completely valid critique. Part of the reason I build is to enjoy the process, and turning the handles is just fun, so I make round handles sometimes, but yes, an oval shaped handle is a good suggestion. - The tang does seem short for the length of the blade, however at 3" long and securely glued inside the handle it is actually very strong. This is not meant for HEMA practice, but if you intend to make a HEMA version, I agree, a longer tang would be important. - Sorry if you viewed this as a minimal tool build, which it is not. This was meant as an explanation of one way to embed the blade in the handle via laminating boards together and then shaping the various pieces. - Good luck, I'll try and get a few more builds with different processes out in the near future.

This sword was made for fun, but for anyone wanting to use a wooden sword for training be sure to hand sand the handle after turning but before putting anything on the wood so it makes an oval shape rather than a perfect circle as that really improves edge alignment.

I think a common wood for actual sparring use is hickory. This blade is made from hickory, though not in a way that would hold up to much abuse. Try to find as straight grain as you can, though no wooden sword will hold up indefinitely.. Just my thoughts, though I'll probably do a build sometime that would hold up to a bit more use.

Nice sword! I definitely cannot make this with my current (or probably ever) tools but I'm taking ideas from it and I might end up making a simpler version. This one probably not the best, I'd make the blade a bit wider and not route out the channel if that was the intention.. Using hickory is good though if you want a practice sword, it will take some abuse before breaking.

I've been trying to make a wooden sword out of hardwood/softwood instead of things like bass and balsa to avoid a light weight prop for a friend of mine, but everytime I either plane the stock or cut in the bevels the board always seems to ward in one direction or another.. I know this is an old video, but can you offer any advice?
@GeeksWoodShop
@GeeksWoodShop 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what's causing your wandering. Are you using a tablesaw to create the bevels or a router? If using a router, like I do, my suggestion is to use as large a panel bit as you have access to and take small passes. I have a few other vids on swords that show the process as well. Good luck!
@ABrokenSociety

@@GeeksWoodShop Yeah, I've been using a table saw to start the bevels because I'm pretty foot at grinding them to the finish, but table saw bevels speed it up considerably. I'm also wondering if it's the weather causing my issue.

As a suggestion for a more realistic experience when wielding a sword, make the handle ovular (oval). This shape gives a much easier achieved edge alignment and is more ergonomic in the hand. I understand that as a toy or display piece, this may not matter, but added details make pieces like this that much more appreciable.

full tang is always better... I actually suggest that you go to purpleheart armory, and get a synthetic waster. Rawlings Knightshop for a beauful, and somewhat realistic look, penti type III for realistic look, plus, all have a rounded safety tip, that is far safer than a wooden point

suggestion though, the handles please make it a bit more oval shaped since that would be important for edge alignment and overall "knowing where the edge is." Round handled swords tend to "twist" in your hand after hitting thus ruining edge alignment (that is not to say that there are no round-handled swords, swords primarily used for stabbing have round handles but I won't elaborate on that cuz it will be way too long) and, after quite a while of holding training swords, oval shaped handles are a bit more comfortable. Nice work though, and i hope you do more wooden swords, LIKE SABERs CUZ I FUCKIN LOVE SABERS.

I wanted to make a wooden sword when I was in high school especially since it was our last project of the school year but my teacher told me no and I am still sad to this day that I couldn't make a wooden but might be able to one day

If U make these out've hard wood, make the hilt really sturdy, & really work the edge & point with sanding & polishing; also a bit of fire hardening, that could actually B usable in a fight.

Has a lot of details in this woodwork book “pepe amazing plan” (Google it). There are a few designs in the book but it is primarily explaining the whole process of how you can do various things and what devices to utilize to accomplish them. Simply speaking, I`m fulfilled using this book, specially in the procedure of learning about wood working.

if you take requests and sell your creations I'd like a bit of info on that. I lack most tools needed and I'd love to be great at prop making but I can't really spare the time and I get nervous :/ I'm trying to make Future Trunks' sword from Dragon Ball Z right now with foam board and craft paper. handle made of pvc. and it's taking me way longer than I intended just because of my nervousness

man, now I want to turn a handle on my lathe... But all of my sword grips tend to be ornate and flat on both sides with an inset... Or exactly like I just said AND built into the blade, with a guard that comes off of the blade and attaches to the pommel, making it even less feasible. XP

Geeks Wood Shop ...... you could make the tang thicker and the full length of the handle or it will snap on contact with those troublesome baddies in the back yard ! seems an awfully short and weak tang considering the length of blade don't you think ? otherwise an excellent job !

No full tang? And the guard seems a little short. On second hand, the whole thing looks a little small ;). In all seriousness, it's a good piece.

what is the router bit called you used to shape the blade edge? I think the bits a Yonico make, but can't find one that looks like yours.
