This so makes me smile because I had the blessing of renting a car to Marc probably 4 years ago when he came to Dallas. It was one of those moments when I asked him his name and he said "I'm Marc Russo." I said you spell your name just like my favorite saxophonist! (Big idiot) He just laughed and we talked for 45 minutes. It was awesome.

The story behind the 'fashionable stage outfits', is that the Jackets came straight from the plane and their luggage got lost. So they just went out 'as is'. I was there and it is still one of the highlights of the festival (and I am talking 45 years!)

I know Yellowjackets from this time. I saw them twice live with M. Russo I remember saying hello to them in a restaurant in San Sebastian, they were going to play in the same concert with Michael Franks. they react as "Do you know as?", yes, you are yellowjackects ! they were very humble at that time, ,very friendly and accessible. It happened to me that when M. Russo left the band(still don´t know why) I stop being interested in their work. ( I associate the sound of the alto sax to the band). Marc Russo in my opinion is a melody constructor when playing solos, and that makes he unique, great performer with a fantastic sax sound. It's not a standard Jazz sax.... He does not maybe play with so many scales and "jazz- technique" as others because he is not a total jazz player, but this is what it makes him diferent and gives that incredible feeling when playing. Maybe that`s why he left the band, cause the band was moving by more jazzy roads.

I second that Jackets without Marc Russo isn't quite the same. Their best stuff is from like 1986-1990.

Growing up in the Bay Area I saw all these guys so many times through the years. You know? I've seen Tower over a hundred times and Yellowjackets every like year for ever! To have watched Robin and Mark Ford firing on all cylindars in a shopping mall in Mt. View playing the whole Yellow record flawlessly to Yoshi's recently... they are all my favorite bands. This music with Marc Russo is my favorite too. This was some scary stuff live, this was a great band. That cat can play the horn.

had the pleasure of working with Mintzer in the studio on one occasion as a lad- Tough arrangement I did of an old standard with tons of bizarre extensions already on tape, and he nailed 2 perfect solos in 2 takes, even humoring my over eager green-ness. Total real deal genius pro. -But---forgive me--Russo will always be the perfect fit for the 'jackets in my book. "At their Best?" I begrudgingly agree

I think I was there, Holland 1989 or 1990. I was working as a sound engineer with a Cuban band (Irakere), and sneaked into Yellowjackets sound check (I've never heard of them before). I remember Marc Russo was very anal about the sound of the soprano sax, he went for like 15 minutes setting the eq and rev/delay. I was only able to watch the beginning of the concert, because my band was about to start in another hall. I had to wait like 15 years to enjoy their full act in Mexico, but with Bob Mintzer.

megafunk88 I'm all with regarding Marc Russo beeing the perfect fit for Jackets i'm such a sucker for his alto and the period of the second half of the 80:s is my favorite. No offense to Bob Mintzer who truly is an amazing musician and composer, arranger but in my opinion Jackets didn't became the same when he left. The first time i heard his alto i got hooked immediatly!

Mintzer is a fantastic player with more breadth of style than Russo. He writes a lot of their stuff as well. Russo would be good in the SNL band with his down home style.
@scottcoston78325 жыл бұрын
stretch54 First comparing musicians of this caliber is just a way for folks to voice their preference, that being said Mintzer sounds like he wants to be Brecker. Moreover, Russo does a great job with motivic development... Amazing on Ballads and altissimo is incredible. Russo is more like a Sanborn... Sanborn did more with different styles of music... but on straight blues jam, Russo is king... which reinforces your SNL comment... except he an also play bebop like Phil Woods. (Yes radically different sound)

Yellowjackets & The Rippingtons: Best two jazz groups of all time!! Steely Dan is my all time FAVORITE ... but I consider SD more "Rock/Jazz" then streaight "Jazz," thus the shortlist above. Sandborn would be a fave in the solo-artist cat.

I’ve followed the Yellowjackets for almost 30 years and still enjoy early works from Mark Russo. Bob Metzger does a great job of replacing Mark, but the original harmonics from Russo are hard to beat. I can hardly wait to see them when. they’re in town at Yoshi‘s Oakland or San Francisco.
