How to turn a crazy pattern french tapered rolling pin on a wood lathe. This video shows just how much preparation goes into a project before you actually put something on the lathe to turn it. I start by cutting out the hardwoods cherry, maple, and walnut to the right length. I then rip them into quarter inch strips on the table saw. I glue them up sorting the strips into an alternating pattern. When the glue is set enough I cut an angle into the blank and then rip it into more strips. I then glue those strips together and I alternate the direction of the strips. This time the glue is left overnight so it has time to more fully cure. Again I cut the same angle into the wood blank. At this point I am able to cut out a 2 inch rolling pin blank and trim the ends. Now i can put the rolling pin blank on the wood lathe to turn it. I mount the blank between centers and rough it to round using my bowl gouge because I am concerned about the grain direction causing tear out. After it is round I
refine the center barrel of the rolling pin to bring it to one even diameter. The depth for the ends is set using calipers and my skew chisel. Then I am able to mark how far in the taper will go using a template. I shape the taper again with the bowl gouge. Once everything is blended and looking good I use a spindle gouge to round the ends and create space to cut off the ends. It is sanding time! So I sand and fill gaps. I then saw off the ends and put on the finishing touches by burning my brand in the end. Oil the rolling pin and it is ready to bake with!

Daughter in Law just asked for the French rolling pin. I was just going to plain Jane taper the cylinder, but now watching you, I will have a go at being fancy. Of course I will have to make two because the wife will want one when she sees the results LOL

Jason, I enjoy your videos. I appreciate the explanations of your wood turning process and as a “newbie” it really helps me to understand why you choose one tool over another. I look forward to learning from you via the videos.

Good job Jason 👍. One of my future projects is to glue up two different types of wood and turn it. I’ve tried to narrate my videos in the past but I can’t seem to get them to come out right. You are very good at it. Keep up the great work.

Greetings from Brazil. Nice work, if you put two rotating handles on the ends, it would make a beautiful pasta roller. Hugs.
