This is the epitome of half-assing it. It was wrong in every sense, but when you start wiping your barrel with your t-shirt that tells me all I need to know. Power to you brother...enjoy the range time!

Thousand Hills Ranch said every fud who ever did a diy garage hack job AR15 build. You post a video of this gun surviving a carbine course or a 3 gun match and I’ll believe it. Casual plinking does not equal “works perfectly”. 1 there is no rocksett on those set screws so they’re going to back out, 2, you eyeballed the alignment and hand drilled the set screw dimples, so I guarantee they’re nowhere close to being drilled in alignment with the gas port. The first time you run this gun hard, this gas block will slip on you.

@@jordans5674 I think you should check your definition of fud at the door. I don't need to prove it to you. It's proven itself over the years. If you're truly a VET like your username states, in all seriousness, thank you all of your sacrifice for our nation. But your hate is misplaced here.

@Wonderkidd863 The frustration is with woefully unqualified Bubba teaching ppl how to destroy their guns. U don't need to be an Engineer to install a gas block, but you need some of their precision. 1st, Bubba should start with a fresh barrel, maybe he doesn't have the $, whatever. 2nd, Bubba needs to buy and use a Jig. The Jig allows for precise alignment of drilling in relation to the gas port. Bubba was drilling through the threads of the Gas Block, great way to cut the threads. The Jig has drill alignment and depth guage, you know, so you don't drill through the barrel. 3rd, Bubba needs to be using a Drill Press, not a hand held drill. That's how things go awry. Again, Engineer precision techniques. You also have a Vice on the Drill Press that holds the Barrel and Gas Block so it does not move at all so you have precision. 4th, I'm sure Bubba wasn't using the proper Drill Bits. There are bits that are made especially for this. 5th, Bubba was just using standard paint to cover the bare metal surfaces rather than using proper surface treatments to protect against corososion. He figures rust he doesn't see is good enough.

Shouldn't the gas block line up with one of the already existing detents in the barrel so that you can pin it in place?

a transfer punch would have given you a perfect center for your spot drill. How did you double check that the gas port in the block was lined up perfectly with the port in the barrel? I'm guessing that the pin hole on the side of this gas block doesn't line up with one of the original pin holes for the A2 front sight?
@WildMountainGarage2 жыл бұрын
Great tip, I'm obviously no machinist or gunsmith but I've learned a bit since doing this video. Yes, the holes didn't line up. The gas port hole in the block, if I remember correctly, was bigger than the hole on the barrel. I compared the block side-by-side with the barrel and noted the positioning and just aligned the block visually vertically. I may have shone a light through the barrel or block and looked but I don't remember. In any event, it's aligned and still works great with no issues.

Drill slow with lots of pressure for steel. Also, use your gas block as a drill guide. I wouldn't use a center punch because i doubt you'll find center of the hole. Once you drill your first dimple remove you gas block, clean and debur your dimple. Then reinstall your gas block and first allen screw. Then drill your second. Hope this helps. The video was made by a DYI which is fine but he lacks experience.

+Rudy Spurlin goof question. No, I haven't. This video is from last year and we have moved and are moving again soon so hopefully after that I'll be able to devote time to getting a press and doing it. I'd assume it wouldn't be too hard with a proper press and sharp bit. Sorry I can't be of more help at the moment.
@MrChuckwagon556 жыл бұрын
Doulos - You don’t need a press, you can use a hand drill if you lock the gas block in a vice.
@BlackWolf42-6 жыл бұрын
MrChuckwagon55 - to drill the dimples but to drill the slot for the pin, you sure do need a drill press & an endmill to start a flat on the barrel so that you can later drill through.
@JB-ez2jz4 жыл бұрын
@@BlackWolf42- I know this is an old comment but I just couldn't let it go. You absolutely do not need a press to drill the pin I've done it with my Milwaukee hand drill many times

@@JB-ez2jz I couldn't do it. My carbide tipped drills would skitter around like the barrel was made of glass. I simple harbor freight drill press made it a breeze to get the depth perfect and I didn't mung up the finish on the other rifle.
