Gelatin Printing with Translucent Layers

Gelatin Printing with Translucent Layers is a video of me demonstrating how to print adding translucent layers to your gel plate prints. These prints could be unfinished prints you are unsure what to do with. Sometimes all they need is one more layer!

Materials used in the video:
- 8 x 10 A gel plate
-Golden Open acrylic paints (slow drying and translucent)
Colors shown include Thalo blue, Hansa yellow, cadmium yellow, Quinachrodone red, and Titanium white.
-Brayer
-Masking tape
-Various papers including cardstock, printer paper or printmaking papers. The thicker papers work best.

Great video! Thank you! I wouldn't use alcohol directly on my gel plate because it will dry it out and might ruin it. Mild soap (dishwashing soap is fine) and water applied with paper towels or soft sponges, baby wipes, and pulling with blank or painted sheets of paper. Baby oil is also recommended to condition the surface of the plate, that can help pull stuck paint, too.

The same colors are translucent/transparent whether the paint is Open or regular acrylics. Maybe I missed that when I FFed. You can also buy an $8 bottle of Open Medium which extends the length of time regular acrylics stay wet.

@@ClareWinslowArtStudio actually glossy photo paper will cause permanent damage but the other side is still good.

When I’ve finished printing I put my plate in a nice warm bath of soapy water for a soak while I clear away everything else. Then I gently wash off any dried paint and pat the plate dry with lint free tea towel.

That was an old attempt at a transfer with laser photocopy. It turned out light so I printed on top here. Thanks for watching.

If you care about the effects of plastic in landfills, which contribute to global warming, don’t use tape (plastic) or baby wipes, unless they’re biodegradable.
