⛸ My daughter took skating lessons from Dianne in 1982 at the Brea Ice Rink in Orange County, California. ⛸

I skated with Diane. We had the same coach. Friends with her and her family. She was as nice as she was a great skater.

Watching De Leeuw's '76 Olympic LP and comparing it with her winning performance a year earlier at the '75 World Championships, it is like watching two different skaters. Her speed and flow improved dramatically, her artistic ability also improved immensely and the adaptation to a different technique in her jumps as well as her spins was definitely a big improvement. Obviously she was capable of doing more than repeated double loop jumps and was definitely quite capable of hitting a triple toe loop in this program. She may not have won the Olympic gold medal but "kudos" to and her coach for the obvious improvements she made in one short year. Well done....

@@charlesbergen5398 Well, with her 'dramatic ' and 'immense' improvement in 1976, she must not have skated very well for her 1975 gold! Ah yes! She made no major gaffes, won the CP and the SP while Dorothy fell in her SP and was only 5th in CP.
@charlesbergen5398 Жыл бұрын
@@waynehentley4332 - You are correct. In 1975 it was one of the weakest women's events of the decade if not the weakest. She was, more or less, the best of the worst.

While Dianne had a lovely program, there were: 2 jump errors, less speed, less power, less sureness of edge, and less double axels than Dorothy. 1 triple toe isn't enough to overcome that.
@Person-mh6xq5 жыл бұрын
e2theeyepie actually, Dianne completed *three* clean double axels and a triple toe. More content than Dorothy. Having said that, just the quality of her basic stroking was inferior to Dorothy’s and the overall program suffered from it, along with her other errors.

Am I crazy or did she use the same music from her SP in her long program?????

same piece in the short and long yes at the end of the long!

Whenever I watch this clip, I'm puzzled by the musical selection, which I find neither exciting, dramatic, or particularly interesting. Seems an odd choice for a gold-medal hopeful.

In general she's better than D. H. She did a double flip + double toe loop, well executed, didn't she?? And her triple toe was good, too.... Back then, the 6.0 system, it was a lot easier to really manipulate the scores....

Dorothy had better spins, better carriage, better double axels, better musicality, and she had the IT factor.

@@mattg.812 We were very glad (and proud) with Dianne de Leeuw, the Dutch-American figure skater who represented our country, the Netherlands. I think her silver medal behind Dorothy Hamill was well deserved, as was her 1st place at the '75 World Championships.

When I watched it in 1976. I was truly amazed that DH won. DH made mistakes but, for some crazy reason it wasn't noticed. Also Diana de Leeuw made mistakes but, for some crazy reason it didn't matter that much. Even now looking back DH figure skating was kind of boring and not so well executed in 1976. In those days it was pretty much arranged that were really focused on certain countries to win the medaille and most of the times very good figure skaters didn't get rewarded in the way they should have. In my personal opinion I really think DH should not have won. There were better skaters then her. Of course you don't have to agree.

Hello she did a triple. Why did she not win??
@michaelvaughn1697 жыл бұрын
One jump does not a champion make. While Dianne may have completed a triple, she was not the best skater of the evening. Her overall technique was not of the same standard as Dorothy's, who was an almost flawless technician and, while the program has a certain elegance about it, her choreography and transitions were not particularly interesting or complex. She also had a flawed short program that left her in fourth place, and was third in figures. In the free skating, every judge placed Hamill first.
@metsdudenj6 жыл бұрын
her spins were horrendous and Dorothy was superior in her spins. She also had errors on a few jumps and although there were some good moments, she was already far behind Dorothy, who was the leader going into this phase. Diane was third,
