Thanks for the comments, everyone! What's coming up as an interesting theme is everyone thinking it wrong to consider the Nikon Z50 as a "beginner camera." Let's be clear that Nikon officially classifies that Z50 as an "entry-level camera." IMO, a beginner camera is simply easier for beginners to grasp and start shooting with right away; "beginner" does not mean that the camera has lesser quality or features than any counterparts.

I’m no beginner. Been a Nikon user for decades. The Z50 is an excellent camera. It’s my go to camera , coupled with the 16-50 it’s an unbeatable combination, way in front of my ZV-E10 and Alpha 7 111 for ease of use and picture quality. BTW. it’s pronounced NicK-on ….not NyeKon …

What's the other lens that you can recommend with Nikon z50 i jave both of the kit lenses , and honestly they are great , but i do have to switch on occasion , is there something in between , 50mm 1.8 or 24-70mm ? Have you tried those on z50
@ronspi3 жыл бұрын
@@dystopianrunner5617 I have both and they work great with the Z50. Juat remember that the Z50 is a crop sensor camera (APS-C) and the 50mm as well as the 24-70mm are full frame lenses, so they would behave like a 75mm and 36-105mm respectively. You might have to take a few steps back due to the magnification, but the lenses are great on the Z50 and my Z6II. I have the 50mm F1.8 for the Z and the F mounts. Both are great and not expensive.

As a D750 and Z6 shooter, I love the Z50 for a light walk around camera to carry everywhere. The FTZ adapter works great with modern Nikon lenses but I also really like the third party adapters which are more streamline for adapting those old school Nikkor manual focus primes. And with focus peaking, I'm using these old classics more and more!

I like the screen flipping down because in videos your eyes are perfectly centered and you’re not looking at a side. The tripod problem can be solved with a small grip that “moves” the tripod mount to the side and it works well!

I stood in front of this camera Z50 and the A6400 right at the same shop which I returned my LUMIX G85 due to its poor auto-focus. I can tell you, the Z50 looked appealing and seems good but it's only drawbacks... It can't support a GIMBAL and yet it lacks IBIS. BTW. if I can say anything, go for Sony A6400. Nice review! Although Nikon is marketing this camera as a "beginners" camera, it does have features and benefits of a more advanced camera. The kit lenses, made mostly of plastic, are very small and light, and produce very good results, even in less than ideal lighting situations ( bump up the ISO). Additionally, Nikon's AF-P F mount lenses, such as the 18mm-55mm, 10mm-20mm, and 70mm-300mm, are also relatively small and light, focus silently and quickly, and work really well with this camera. Nikon's ergonomics, for me, are the best. Finally, if you are moving up from a cell phone, this camera is much smaller than a camera like the D7500 or D500, which will be appealing for lots of people. This camera is also smaller than the D3500, also a great camera for beginners. The lack of IBIS is not a big deal for me, as I like to shoot mostly stills. and the kit lenses have VR.

15:32. I started with a bridge camera before 2004, then a D70 and then to a D200 in 2006, D700 in 2008 and then an embarrassing amount of mirrorless cameras that never quite left me as happy as the D700. I also had a few other Nikon DSLR cameras like the D750 but today I’m finally settled down with Z7 and shortly Z 50 to pair with it. I think in a few more years Nikon will be very well positioned with mirrorless cameras. Sony got the jump on everyone and I also had the a7R III but I can say for myself the Z7 makes me happier and I’m finally back to the days when I was as content with the D700 :-)

That's a nice progression of cameras. I left Nikon for the Canon 5D Mark III, and even though I have Sony and Fuji mirrorless, I would really love to stick with Canon. Hopefully, they can catch up with their mirrorless line -- I feel like even Nikon has a leg up on them right now!

@@Gemini_Connect I'm not really sure what Canon's strategy is. I fully expected them to give it their best when I entered the full frame mirrorless market but I was surprised they didn't seem to take it as seriously as I thought they would (with the EOS R). They are the market leader and have great brand recognition so that's an advantage for them. Maybe they're focused more on what will sell to the masses instead of what enthusiasts are interested in. I'm not really sure. They seem to be at one extreme or the other. High end pro DSLR for working professionals or low end budget cameras with not much in-between for now. I think they made a big mistake not coming up with a single lens mount for APS-C and FF mirrorless bodies, but I think that's where Nikon had the benefit of not being in that market until later (they could end up using the very same excellent Z mount for both FF and APS-C bodies.

Problem solved. I made a 'C' shaped tripod mount adaptor from parts I got at the Walmart hardware section. I can view the flip down screen while on a tripod. It cost me about ten dollars and about five minutes to make. Unlike the smallrig adaptor, the centre of gravity is kept under the original tripod screw mount.

Z50 is not positioned as a beginner camera. It's in the same class as D7500 and D500. I have it and it's really a nice camera. I like it a lot. No IBIS is not a problem for taking photos. Both lenses are sharp. Ergonomics are great also the menues and image quality and colours.
@Gemini_Connect5 жыл бұрын
Nikon brands the Z50 as an "entry level" mirrorless camera (which to me, is synonymous with beginner), mostly because there are only 3 cameras in their whole Z-series mirrorless line. IBIS is not a problem for taking photos -- true, but IBIS can help you take photos at lower shutter speeds.
@jnd24154 жыл бұрын
Same class as “D500?” GTFOH!
@jmlr20115 жыл бұрын
Agree with others here the Z50 is not a beginner camera but more enthusiast to advanced. Also, Small Rig has a bracket for the Z50 that allows the tripod to be offset mounted without obstructing the flip screen. While the Z50 is not a hard camera to learn on I'd certainly not classify it as beginner. The images from the native lenses are sharp and with colors that Nikon is known for. This little camera is a gem and it functions great with my F mount lenses using FTZ adaptor including my Tamron lenses. Kudos to Nikon on this one, its a winner. Now for my only real issue, and that is the viewfinder shows the last image taken with continuous H which is 11 fps but you can't see or track the actual focus on what your subject is if it's moving. Hopefully, Nikon can fix that with a firmware update.

Thanks for the great Nikon Z50 review! I took a break from shooting for a while and my most recent Nikon was the D3s which no longer works and a D700 which still works but no video options, which you know cause you had one. I started my events, virtual walking and tours youtube channel a few years ago and have been using Gopro and Panasonic 4k camcorder for that for that. But now that Nikon is getting in to more 4K video options and with mirrorless I think its time to go back into it especially because I have all these great Nikon F lens all Nikon 28-70 2.8, 80-200 2.8, 80-400 5.6, 10mm fish eye, 60mm macro, 50mm 1.8, 28mm 2.8, lens that I can use with the FTZ Mount Adapter right? I’ve gotten used to smaller and I was looking at the Nikon Z6 or considering the Z5 but I keep going back to looking at the less costly more compact Z50 for using it for video and photos for my youtube channel and for traveling when the situation with covid is better. Do you think I would be making a mistake? My main thing is videos now days. I mainly want to use with with a gimbal for walking videos and videoing events on a tripod in lowlight that my GoPro cant handle and for videoing surfing action which I would use on a tripod.

Dude, I love your channel! I just checked it out and love the walking segments -- it makes me miss home. I grew up in Kapolei 🌞😍 It looks like you already use a gimbal (which one do you use?) for a lot of your shots, so the Nikon Z5 or Z6 would be great. If you can spare the expense, go for a full-frame option. The Z50 is great, but it wouldn't perform as well in low lighting. Get the FTZ adapter, and you'll be good to use any of your Nikon DSLR glass with any of the Z cameras. Hope this helps!

I have been a Nikon DSLR user for more than a decade. Getting on in years, I have been looking for a small, light weight camera for carrying around. Point and shoots doesn't quite cut it, and I had almost zero success with mobile phone cameras and fill-flash. The Z50's order winners are: 1: Small and light enough to fit in my fanny pack. Perfect to holidays and sightseeing. 2. Compatibility with my existing Nikon equipment, not just the F-mount lenses. There's the flash units etc as well. If Nikon were to make a real pancake lens eg 24mm/1.8 DX I would definitely buy it. My biggest gripe with the kit lens is it's f/6.3 and all the existing fast S-mount lenses are big and heavy. In conclusion, the Z50 is not just a beginner's camera. It has many features and functions to are also sought for by enthusiasts as a small, light camera for carrying around. Like your video. Thanks

I started at the Sony ZV-1 and then found some of the mirrorless beginner cameras have interchangeable lenses. So I watched reviews on the ZV-10, the Canon M50 Mark ii, and the Nikon Z50. I’m still not sure what to get. I like the weather sealed nature and the metal construction of the Z50. It’s just that flip down screen which annoys. I think it is a beginner camera if you're looking at what's being offered brand to brand. However this camera is more capable than a Nikon D3, D3s, D4, D4s in terms of photographic capabilities, I think it also exceeds all cameras up to the D500. ISO 51,200 needs minimal noise correction, the default settings from Lightroom do the trick or auto from Topaz DeNoise Ai. The resolution is excellent for about anything. It has better dynamic range than those older models too. The Z 50 is a miniature Nikon D4 with 1 stop better iso. My issues with the Z 50 and why I returned it. 2 Card slots, battery life (can't shoot and charge), too small, UHS 1 SD card, no illuminated buttons, the af points take too long to go across the screen (too many af points even when set to use half), switching between video and stills is very slow. I really liked and really wanted the Z 50 to be the camera for me but it just wasn't. I'm more of DSLR shooter. I like having a optical viewfinder.
@Gemini_Connect5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insights, Donovan. I agree with you that the Nikon Z50 is loaded with features for being a beginner-oriented camera -- the main reason why I call it that is because Nikon brands this camera as entry-level, and compared to the rest of the Z-series cameras (all 3 of them, lol!), it is. IMO mirrorless cameras, in general, have features just as advanced if not more so than DSLRs. But there's a reason why I still haven't sold my DSLRs even though I partially bought into mirrorless 😉

Hmmmm that is a really tough call. Yes, I think I would take the Nikon Z50 over the Sony, just because the image stabilization is pretty great and the colors are better straight out of camera. But Sony does have more lenses and cameras to choose from, so if you end up needing more gear, Sony might be better down the road.

@@Gemini_Connect I thought you mentioned that the Z50 doesn't have stabilization?

Thank you for the video. The Z50 is fine when taking photos, but not so fine when shooting video. I found the camera super lacking when it comes to video, especially in the low-light area. The auto settings are pretty much useless for low-light situations. I got some okay results with the manual settings. I have been super disappointed with it from the video side. Gonna grab the Sony A7Siii and I bet things will change dramatically.
@Gemini_Connect4 жыл бұрын
Gotcha, thanks for the feedback. For me, the Z50 did fine when there was ample lighting, but it definitely would suffer in low lighting due to its small crop sensor body. The Nikon Z6 or Z7 would perform much better in low lighting, or the A7Siii if you go the Sony route (that looks like such a bad ass camera!).
@OfficeofthePacific4 жыл бұрын
@@Gemini_Connect copy. Thanks for the insight. I didn't realize the sensor size was the main deal? I thought if you have a lower f stop it would solve the issue. Thank you. Shows how little I know. I was wanting the A7Siii but by the time you add, cards and glass you're at $5,000. I was thinking the GH5 would be an upgrade because of the 4:2:2 and 10 bit but maybe not in lowlight since it has a small sensor. Even in well lit areas I'm not crazy about the Z50 for video. I would call it slightly above average? Thank you Gemini! I'm June 9th 😂🤣😝
@Gemini_Connect4 жыл бұрын
@@OfficeofthePacific Ahh a fellow Gemini -- hooray! A fast f-stop helps (especially if you can be at f/1.8-2.8), but so does ISO and sensor size. When shooting on a full-frame camera you can push the ISO a lot higher. I'm usually at ISO 3200-6400 when shooting in low light -- shooting at those ISOs on a crop sensor or micro four-thirds camera like the GH5 won't result in the best picture quality, but it will be loads better on a full-frame camera like the A7SIII.

great video, but to keep calling it a beginner camera is a little misleading..I have the D7100 also, and the Z50 does everything the 7100 can do..it's better described as a different camera because it's mirrorless, and it could be described as a mini Z6 to be more accurate, although a beginner would be comfortable with the Z50..I bought it because it's a camera that you can throw in your coat pocket and take it anywhere instead of lugging around a bigger system and I'm sure that there are plenty of people around that also have the same idea..good info though..thanks !
@Gemini_Connect5 жыл бұрын
That's a fair point. I call it a beginner camera because Nikon themselves call it an "entry level" camera, and compared to the rest of the Z-series cameras, it is the more beginner-friendly camera. But to your point, the Z50 has so many more features than previous beginner-oriented cameras have had, so a non-beginner could easily get a good experience with this camera too. That was what I hoped to illustrate with the accompanying test footage video. Anyway, thanks for the food for thought!

I would buy this little Nikon Z50 as Im shooting since late 70s. I started with the famous Canon T90 than jumped over to Minolta. When the digital era arrived I shooted with Sony and after that I jumped again to another brand and the Nikon D40 was my first Nikon digital camera ever. I upgraded to D60 and later on to the Nikon D90. I used the D90 quite a long time and than the D7000 series arrived. Than upgraded to his bigger brother D7100. After shooting a while with dslr I jumped - I like jumping - to my first mirrorless camera the M43 Panasonic G7. Than again after a long while, my last jump to the original Panasonic G9. But as a real Nikon enthousiast I will choose for a downgrade. The Nikon Z50 will be a good choice over the fullframe because I can use my Nikon F mount lenses instead of buying expensive Z mount lenses. So even your video is 3 years old it helped my choice to buy the Nikon Z50. By the way....nice video!

Nikon should make a FTZ adapter that accepts filters like the one Canon makes for the R series. That way beginners can save money on filters. To change subject, since I have started working w the Luminar 4 program and it's Sky Replacement feature, I have become conscious of how many pictures I and my friends take have white skies. So setting up a burst mode with exposure compensation, if your camera doesn't have a good HDR feature, can be a good thing. I enjoyed your video. It was clear and covered a lot in a concise manner. BTW, the Z50 looks good at high iso. I checked it out on Dpreview's test chart.

I love my new z50. It is not as good as all you guys are saying about the noise. For portraits I wouldn’t go over 500 ISO or the noise is very apparent compared to my z6. Well I found out the hard way with my Z50. That if I use my FTZ adapter with any of my f mount lenses. My Apple iPad Pro does not except any of the raw camera files. It does except the raw files from my 50mm & 85mm f1.8S lenses but no lenses used with the ftz adapter . That really sucks
@Gemini_Connect4 жыл бұрын
The Z6 has a full-frame sensor, versus the Z50's APS-C/crop sensor, so it makes sense that the Z6 will have overall less noise in the images. Can't say that I've edited RAW images on the iPad Pro, but sorry to hear that the FTZ adapter seems to make a difference.

I usually use the z50 to vlog and when I do, I keep the screen flipped down so I can see myself. I usually put out makeup content so I always need to show different products. Unfortunately, the camera does not recognize / does not auto focus on the product and continues to focus on my face even if the product is already closer to the camera. I always have to click on the shutter button or the auto focus on the touch screen so it focuses on the product am trying to show and honestly it can really get annoying if I have to do that all the time. I am not sure if I had my camera setting incorrectly, but I have tried different modes to no avail. IT KEEPS ON FOCUSING ON MY FACE AND IT NEVER AUTO FOCUSES ON THE PRODUCT. WHY IS THAT SO HUHUHU. I have tried to hold the product for more than 5 seconds and see if it would focus on the product but nah. Camera won't budge. Nope, not auto focusing on the product at all. If you have an opinion on straight out of camera colors, what profile did you use (LR, CR, PS, etc.)? I'd say that Nikon gives the most neutral and is stronger in the purples and violets, even. I do feel that their lenses can have subtly different color character or tint and this leads to my rant with Adobe: I do not only want camera specific profiles, but lens and light specific. That is, "straight out of camera" is meaningless if you shoot raw and when you shoot JPEG try different profiles on offer. by the way, did you calibrate you monitor and did your calibration include the light in the room around the monitor?
@Gemini_Connect4 жыл бұрын
I don't mess around with camera profiles on any models except for Fujifilm. In this case, I just used the default picture profile on Nikon, because I agree with you that colors look pretty great straight out of camera. No monitor calibration was done either.
