I am so proud of you for speaking out about some of the terrible trends and how we're going to look back and know how awful those were. Not only are the oversized clothes hideous, but barrel shaped jeans, jeans that are wide and short above the ankle, oh my gosh there are some absolutely atrocious clothing choices out there! I think it's a shame when influencers promote unflattering clothing and In the near future, we'll all be looking back saying "why in the world did people believe the hype?"

I think sticking with the classic and structured looks is the key to exuding confidence. Although, one can think outside the box with some statement pieces to add some variety, as long as they are flattering on you. Great tips as always, Gemma.

Thank you for saying it! The hideous over-sized blazer looks sloppy! Retailers have to reinvent something every year to keep sales going - that is a fact. If clothes styles were to remain the same, the need for designers would fall flat. It is a self perpetuated income. Thank you for having the guts and maturity to call it out!

The bag story is also a great example in how practicality is also a hallmark of good style -- if you look fabulous but can't walk/move/don't have room for all your things in your handbag, you'll never really feel fabulous!

My grandmother invested in a "perfume bar" in the Galvez Hotel in Galveston,Tx, the only luxury hotel there in the 1930s. So when I was a child her only grandchild she had a mirrored perfume tray with lots of bottles and the first row was toilet waters in single flower scents which I was allowed to wear. The back row were scents like Shalimar, Joy ...a wonderful rose scent, Chanel No. 5, My Sin, and several others. She owned fur stoles , open toe high sli gback heels, a selection of glovein various lengths, many hats and of course dresses...ONLY dresses and two furs one a fox stole with the faces and feet. And a full length light brown mink coat.....I was allowed to try on everything but the dresses which were too big and the mink coat. It awakened the feminine in me ...I was at home a tomboy, but grandmother's treasures seduced me...she had lots of fun clip on earrings for me to try but her diamond engagement ring and her five diamond wedding band she never took off.(I inherited them.) She carried a handkerchief fresh everyday as was rhe fashion then. Women were ELEGANT then.

Miss Gemma ... This is one of the BEST Videos...! ....Thank you for this Topic... " the Leading Lady "... so Timely . So needed. So important, ... I believe we have veered much too far from looking Feminine, .. being put together, and still being Authentic.... I actually watched this twice . The time of " not caring how one looks " has - IMHO - gone on long enough..... and I loved the manner in which you addressed this .....one needn't be " dressed up " everyday ... however, when you look at r e a l , Classic style ...its simple,but well done ,..by the use of fabrics. Attention to detail. Accessories. A nice fitting pair of trousers, a lovely blouse ( or even a sweater ) and stylish shoes will never be out of Style.... add your favourite earrings. A watch . Maybe a beautiful scarf . ... you're ready to be a Leading Lady, even when wearing trousers. ( I am a " skirt kind of woman" , but well made trousers look so stylish as well ! ). And I thank you for speaking out about those " Trends " .... the " over sized blazer "...nothing flattering going on there, at all. Anything really oversized is just silly. There are Trends that just dont make sense, as well. I think once people see that its just " Hype " and clothing Designers', " trying to Re- invent a look "... It will fall flat . Know your own Mind, when it comes to Clothing, and Fashion... otherwise, youll be influenced by Silly " Costumes ", Baggy ,unflattering Clothing and Impulsive spending. 🙂😊💸

Although I am 1,75 m and very slim, maybe I could wear oversized well, but I don't. Never! I just feel it's much more flattering to me when my clothes let show my slim features. And I am so glad to read that I'm not alone with this opinion.😊 And I would add that nit only the oversized clothes are ugly but not least uglier are the too big on the calves boots. Looks like an heron frogs fishing 😅 Gemma, it's a pleasure again to see you with your very charming look! 🤩

💯% Oversized jackets don’t flatter anyone. Women have been buying them for decades as the “oversized” trend circles in and out of fashion. Carrot/barrel legged jeans, paper bag jeans and crocs are also unflattering.

Finally, somebody „attacking“ oversized blazers. I would add to that list anything oversized, really. Ladies in these oversized coats look like they have been smuggling liquor through the border. Regarding scents, I am one-perfume kind of gal. It is amazing, it is expensive, and everyone knows me by that perfume. It is Houbigant Quelques Fleurs. I am rarely in the office and my dear colleague once told me that she knows I am in the building by the scent in the hallway. It is discreet, I don’t wear much, but enough to announce my presence.

Some people can look good and classy in anything so I started to look beyond the clothes. It seems to me that all ladies that look good in their clothes are slim, tall and have lovely hair. So keep slim, stand up as tall as you can and wash and style hair regularly then you look good in almost anything.

Oversized everything doesn't look great especially for petites. But it doesn't hurt to have one "wider" piece though to achieve that more balanced silhouette. It doesn't have to drown you in fabric.

Thank you so much for pointing out that "fashionable" doesn't automatically mean "flattering." And what is stylish about wearing unflattering pieces that make you feel less than your best? I've been trying to add some skirts and dresses to my wardrobe but for the past 2 years all that's been out there are too-short minis and way too long for me midis and maxis. So I've either been buying older knee-length pieces on consignment or getting "nearly wonderful" pieces and having them altered. Ah well, this has always been part of Gemma's message - if it doesn't fit to flatter *you* don't buy it or get it tailored so that it does!

Gemma, you hair is so fabulous in this style. Thanks for the oversized blazer comments. If anyone can get away with wearing one, they must be tall and very slim. Everything else they wear with the blazer must be very flattering. Lydia Tomlinson comes to mind. And yes… those street-sweeper pants! Do people wear them once and then toss them? Yuck! Thanks for all you do, Gemma. 😊

Think about it- when we see a woman who is dressed well (without being snooty) it always makes us smile... so we can do the same for others. And for the inevitable criticism from 'friends', they are just jealous :) Just remember to put on your happy attitude with your glad rags!
@carolg534011 ай бұрын
Totally agree about the oversized blazers, that hang off your shoulders & drown you , especially if a shorter person . The same is true of those awful wide 'no cuff' sleeves that cause problems during day to day tasks, as well as looking hideous. Smart trousers that drag on the floor as a trend another silly trend IMO. I used to laugh at the cut out shoulders on tops, apart from thinking how unflattering and cheap they looked, I wondered do these ladies get odd tan marks as they walk around on holiday? Trends are useful to keep us up to date but need careful thought . So sad Scentbird not available in UK as sounded like a good idea.

I am yet to see anyone wearing oversized clothing, be it blazers, jeans, or dress trousers, look anything but sloppy. Even if they are tall and slim. There are some young influencers who wear them all the time and rave about how flattering the look is...🙄 Sorry, but no, you don't look great, especially when the shoulders are hanging off you or your trousers are a puddle around your feet. Just no from me. Shoes are my absolute favourite item, Gemma. I've always bought good quality (I am patient and wait for sales for some more expensive ones) but never a designer brand. I just can not justify paying those prices for a label. I have many styles and colours, and they truly are my weakness. Such a great video, thank you 🩷🩵💗

Thank you Gemma for another great video, hitting the mark on the head!!! I'd like to ask you a question, I am a very "appropriate" dresser for all occasions. I do think ediquette is important. That being said. Do you think it would be appropriate to wear a leopard print dress to a June wedding. It truely is beautiful, with a v neck line, fluttery short sleeves and a maxi length, the print is not too large with a brown background, feminine and flowy I just don't know....?? Maybe your patrons will chime in with thoughts as well?? Thanks so much!

I often look at pictures of so-called "street style" and wonder what on earth makes anyone think some of these looks are stylish! If I'm honest with myself, a lot of them just look ridiculous. Some ladies look like they just grabbed random pieces and just put them on. It's so true that when a woman is truly stylish, you remember the woman and not the outfit. When they are a fashion disaster, all you can see is the clothes.
