I think all collectors have lost money indulging their hobby, It's the nature of the beast. It's better to collect purely for enjoyment as you care less about value fluctuation. I would always advocate taking ones time when buying statues, don't get caught up in the hype or worry about missing out on a piece, things can always be picked up at a later date. The main advice I would offer to new collectors is don't get into debt, stick within your means, even if you really want an item, nothing is worth the stress of breaking the bank!

I feel your pain my friend. When I was first going to conventions back in the early 80’s I bought some original artwork from an unknown artist at the time. Mike Mignola the creator of hell boy was sitting in a corner drawing random characters so I bought two pieces. One was colored pencil of a Medusa the other felt pen of an astronaut. I payed 20 bucks for the pair. Flash forward several years and I’m in need of rent so I sold them to a comic book shop for a hundred bucks. I still wake up screaming!

Love this, I mean sorry about the losses, but love that you show your guard down, how there can be lows to the highs. That for success there is also loss and sacrifice. It's a good reality check, and thank you for lowering the curtain to let us see some of your own losses in the success you created. Keep the hustle going bud.

My biggest loss in collecting was about 15 years ago, when I was 91 years old, (I am currently 106 years old) was when I sold the first appearance of Thanos. I sold a lot of other books that I shouldn’t of, but that was the biggest.

Love this. We never really get to hear about the losses, just the wins. My worst loss still haunts me, selling an Ultimate Fallout 4, 9.8 waaaaay too early. I bought it for $360 and sold it for $1200 which was the going rate at the time. Now its a $3k book. Not totally a lose but hindsight is 20/20 i guess

Retired and already sitting on a swing looking sad? This video helps people newer to collecting so I'm getting ready to expect some losses. Sometimes though, one man's loss is another man's gain. (cough cough, Gambit Omni) lol. Another great video Gem!

Bottom line for many of us out there we don't buy to resell, we buy because we like what we buy regardless of online reviews. In the end it's what you like not what others like, it's important to you and that's the key. Buying and selling is a business and shouldn't be confused with the true collector and their passion for what they consider valuable. I have a collection that spans 35 years and I haven't and won't sell a thing!!

Great video! I been collecting for the last 5 years and boy have I taken losses. But Gem your absolutely right the hobby has to be funded or collectors will go bankrupt. My first lost was the PCS Street fighter Vega, its an extremely fragile statue, luckily I found a buyer that wanted it so I sold it for 50% lower than the retail price I paid for it. Keep Rocking Gem!

It's good advice you are giving us Gem. I too have been there where I made a deal to sell or trade something most times thinking I was getting the better of the deal only to have what I'd sold or traded go up in value vastly or the item I traded for totally tanking,it's the nature of collecting and it sucks but you have to roll with it and like you said hope your wins far outweigh your losses, matter of fact now before I sell or trade something I give myself a grace period to stop and think before I finalize the deal and ask myself if I'm ready for the particular item leave or enter the collection. Thanks again for your invaluable advice and wisdom.

Hi Gem, good to see you putting out a video like this. People are rarely honest about making losses on things, or they only mention the positive things. I don’t collect statues or CGC keys, but I do buy omnibus where I have overpaid on a couple. My advice for this would be, to hold off because reprints seem to be happening a lot more recently.

Variety is the spice of life man, enjoying all the different videos lately Gem. You shouldn't worry about those losses you mentioned, the constant take away I got was that neither you or I or anyone else can see the future. Respect to Gem cause that Hustle mentality is what elevates people to not have so much fear and just got at it until you can't go at it no more. Understanding that everything in life is going to have some highs and lows it's all part of the game and makes you a better player at it.

Feel your pain Gem, i like when omni's get reprinted for the people that don't own a copy, but inside a piece of me cries... often i've spent alot on a book and then lose out on devaluation of it because of a reprint. What i dislike a ton is when they make old books less than current ones with the SAME content by adding "omnibus" on the back... looking at you Inferno as a large example
