Gemmy Serpentine: A Southwest Oregon Field Guide
This video is a field guide to finding quality serpentine in Southwest Oregon.
I show you what to look for and the key characteristics of the good stuff.
Additional Information:
The serpentine group consists of a family of minerals known for their similar physical properties and chemical compositions, primarily constituted of hydrated magnesium silicates. These minerals are often categorized into three main types based on their structure: antigorite, chrysotile, and lizardite, which are the most common and well-known members of the serpentine group.
Antigorite - often represents the serpentine group in metamorphic rocks.
Chrysotile - fibrous serpentine, widely used historically for its asbestos content.
Lizardite - the most common form of serpentine in a wide variety of settings.
Beyond these, the classification and inclusion of specific minerals as distinct species within the serpentine group can vary, with some references focusing on these three as the primary constituents due to their prevalence and significance. The serpentine group's complexity arises from its polytypism and polymorphism, with various forms exhibiting different structural and physical characteristics despite having a similar chemical composition.

I just found your channel and I've been watching some of your videos. Nice stuff you have here. You seem to have a good understanding of geology in oregon. I live in ashland. I just moved here about a year ago and I'm looking for good rock hunting spots. Other than Green springs mountain, or Worthington trail, do you have any other recommendations on where I could go rockhounding? Thank you.

I love the green serpentine and I love this informative video. But unfortunately we don't have these in Sweden. I only have one thing against this video and that is to "pass by" the gorgeous palm stone sizes, my heart is bleeding😭

I'm sorry 😞 what about Varcerite ( I don't think I'm spelling correctly) also a green stone used in jewelry. Is this something we can find in Oregon?

That first rock you referred to as ' gossular garnet' is I believe what I had mentioned in a different post that was pulled from Slate Creek, and is now a 300lb yard rock. Is this stone semi precious?

You can call it that for sure. Of course, like any mineral, the higher the quality and rarity, the more its worth. Color and clarity are what you want. Hope that helps a bit ^^

Indeed. Technically, the location I'm at isnt a river. It's the bottom of a lake.
