Do you enjoy science? Do you enjoy destruction? If you said yes to either of those questions, then you are in the right place! In this week's episode, Rob and Brittany exploit some of the physical weaknesses of gemstones. With flames and hammers, they will conduct experiments on gemstones like opal, copal, peridot, fluorite, and more! Which stones will survive? Watch to find out!

According to the G.I.A., Fluorite isn't a Gemstone since its Hardness is under 4.

$20 says they don't know where the nearest fire extinguisher is located. *Place your bets ladies & gentlemen!!!* A close-up shot of before & after for the young amber & opal would have been nice to see. Great video! I love destructive experimentations! 😬 "I don't always kill things, but when I do, it's because they were things, and I am a Bear." 🐻💥💎💥

Great video. I have a grapefruit size block of green fluorite with no source tag and have often wondered how to best expose the crystal terminations. A mineral specimen vendor suggested taking a small chisel or flathead screw driver and chipping away at it but I'm very leery of doing that and the small triangular and lozenge shaped surfaces combined with the tiny black granular inclusions have me confused as to if it's really fluorite or something else. It looks nothing like the perfectly cuboidal shape of my purple Chinese fluorite. 🤔

I've done copper electroplating of some jewelry before, and even in the somewhat weak acidic copper sulfate electrolyte, you have to coat some rocks and gems in clear fingernail polish to protect them. On another note what I think is interesting, is I have done some acid etching of bronze. Whatever you mark with a sharpie is not going to get etched. Bronze dissolves away but is protected by a Sharpie marker.. Lol. At least for 15 to 20 minutes anyways. That would not work indefinitely but still fun to think about.

I'd like to point out that not everything that appears like cleavage is thus... Sapphire for instance has no cleavage, yet; is not uncommon to exhibit parting along distinct and often flat planes which do resemble cleavage to the untrained. The notable difference being that parting will not be expected to be uniformly present throughout the material and rather than being due to weak atomic bonds aligned in the unit cell, instead they are largely due to the presence of impurities and or remnant cavities aligned with the crystal growth planes in some materials. Excesses in the presence of parting planes will render a sapphire rather useless from a serious cutters perspective "they're almost impossible to cut and polish well"... subsequently very few sapphires with noticeable planes of parting will ever be seen in the market.

Whoa, these experiments involving smashing gemstones are very interesting.😲🥽💎🔨 To see how each gem reached when they're exposed to fire🔥, get filed, dipped into chemicals🧫⚗ and even explored💥 is so fascinating. It's kinda funny how you guys reached when you're doing them.😨😂 Thanks for showing us this. Hope you do another video like. Nice video.🙂👍🧑‍🔬👩‍🔬💎

I saw a beautiful rose quartz parrot, under 12-inches by 5 or 6. It was a carved slab with streaks of brown-orange-pinks-white-green from India or Pakistan. How would rose quartz grow with so many colors in it ? Cool video 😎🌷

It was wise to use the least expensive opals as NO opals will take a flame. Gilson or Chatham Opals for glass work as they are synthetics without a water content to flash to steam.
