Thank You The Print for featuring COAS Gen S Padmanabhan. He was one of the finest to ever serve IA. He would have made a mincemeat of pakistan if OP parakram had a go ahead. May his soul rest in peace.🙏

His exact response to the query on the nuclear option being exercised by Pak was " Nuclear weapons are not weapons of warfighting: however if Pakistan makes the mistake of using it , the response will be so severe, that its existence will be doubtful ' A perfectly okay statement: and I am a veteran of 37 years in the Army

The general during the op parakram crisis was bold and straightforward. - He wasn’t about mincing words like the political establishment of India was at the time. - he ran his tanks, fully loaded and cocked, parallel to the border. - For full psychological effect you should have seen the images - the slow, deliberate speed of the tanks - engines growling like a lion, gun turret lowered as if it was ready to pounce on you. Totally unafraid, no fear - just ready to get it on. Those images - just tell you how clear headed the military leadership and how committed the soldiers were. The US satellites picked that up on that and reported it to the PM of India. The General unimpressed by America or our political masters understood his task and replied with clarity and conviction. - His reply sent a clear message to the jihadi general in chief Musharraf in Rawalpindi and Pakistan’s patron - USA. Our politicians are masters of bringing a crisis on. But we are blessed that in these moments we had the likes of General Harbaksh Singh, JS Arora, Kumaramnaglam, Manekshaw Sunderji and Padmanabhan.

He was one of the great Army Chief at his time. He was just brilliant, I happened to watch his press conference and was highly impressed by his vocabulary, commitment, knowledge and great vision about our army’s action. For a moment I thought as if I am watching American army chiefs press conference. Great Personality without doubt. Unfortunately he tenure was very short. Please upload his press conference that would be great experience for the people who would like to watch what an a great personality he was !!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

One of the best army chiefs of the post Manekshaw era. Gen Padmanabhan had a command of the language which few have and which revealed a man of great intellect and compassion...his greatness lay not in that he responded immediately but that even at that moment he thought of both saving the life of the young journalist but also the welfare of the men he was sending at a moment's notice.A wonderful episode

General S Padmanabhan, PADDY for his colleagues, was one of the finest officers of the Indian Army. He was commanding an Infantry Brigade in 1990, he got the command of the Brigade late as he first commanded an Arty Brigade, in 23 Inf Div in Ranchi when the GOC and he were just a few Courses apart. I was the staff officer in the Div HQ and used to cross him in the social get-togethers in the Officers' Mess; he unhesitatingly used to interact with the junior-level staff officer. The Div moved to deal with the militancy in Punjab and I got to meet him when I travelled to his Brigade location. In 1993, when I moved to a unit of 19 Infantry Div, he was XV Corps Commander and within three years of Commanding the Brigade; everyone in Srinagar I met in Defence circle talked highly of him. God bless his soul.

Beautiful and factually well documented homage to the former indian army chief who rose to the top position . Shekhar SAHIB, you have done a good thing by mentioning about the tragic incident and time help rendered by the top army and air force chiefs. In certain situations, it is always daring to break or bend the rules or break the rule depending upon the urgency of the situation. Shakespeare rightfully says ,evil goes with the man ,but his virtuous deeds are always remembered after his death. Your reference to the tragic accident AND ROLE played by the late chief is a pointer towards the character of the late soldier. may god rest his soul in peace.and shekhar SAHIB, so far as YOUR Goodself is concerned, you have come a LONG WAy after completing journalism course from punjab university in 1976 0r 1977.this HUMBLE PERSON also studied there during those years.once again feeling proud of YOU REGARDING the manner in which you have bid FAREWELL to the late general

Thanks for such an informative coverage.I still clearly remember watching that press conference on TV though it has been more than two decades When asked what would India do if Pakistan carries out a nuclear strike he responded bluntly "the perpetrators of that particular outrage shall be punished so severely that their continuation thereafter in any form of fray will be doubtful." What a man and an exceptional soldier !!

Don’t be surprised. You should be very happy and proud. Indian generals do what they’re supposed to do. Quietly and patriotically serve their country, and then retire when the time comes. Unlike Pakistani generals who control the govt , are constantly on TV and are involved in almost every business enterprise. The first clue that your country is going down the wrong road is when the names of the Generals are well known to the public. Even worse is when everybody abroad are more familiar with your army Generals than elected civilian leaders. The only nations where the Generals are better known are Pakistan and several African countries.
