I'm not probably aligned with Gen McCrystal politically (I'm likely a bit more conservative), but as a 29-year military veteran including service in OIF/OEF/HOA...he remains a tremendously motivating leader, and his status as a patriot and great American is unquestioned in my mind. Razor -sharp guy!

Biggest badass in the modern Army. Did you see the way he smiled when he said he brought kids in their 20s with piercings on their faces to analyze intelligence and tell operators what to do? He relished that 😂😂 then he went down to say they were just as patriotic as anyone in the room. This is the way of the new Army, at least it should’ve been.

Just watched "WAR MACHINE"and I most bluntly have to say/admit....the movie itself was entertaining in a way(if ya have no knowledge whatsoever of the War in Afganistan(the facts),General McChrystal, nor our Country's and it's civilian rights and liberties throughout history) ....but, I would be dishonest to admit after researching General McChrystal and now having seen some liberal-fied directed/written satire comedy/drama influenced by McChrystal, it truly and nationally saddens me to see some arrogant/ignorant Rolling Stone's writer(whom only selfishly created the article for his own success,which if you know, only created a satire of himself in return realistically) shamelessly attempt to bring down such an honorable man of his country, to whom has devoted his entire life to saving us from foreign threats and a far more threatening ongoing War, be trashed and made into some Hollywood sleight of hand "whatever b.s. Hollywood and R.S. have made into some joke"(merely and simply because both in present years run out of actual decency and originality, so they either focus on bios and toilet articles like Hasting's crap, unaware of the fact they have lost their humanity for their country and the ones out there actually trying to help this country and not laugh about it! But hey, what do I know, I'm no Hasting's nor work for Rolling Stones nor any other liberal centered media,wink, thank god for that!

I just watched it, and I guess you are just missing the point… the movie doesn’t portray the general as stupid, the movie portrays US army as squared thinkers who can’t see outside the box… and the fact that you say that the general was protecting you from “foreign threats”… bro… it was USA itself who armed al-quaeda… (to stop Soviet Union) … it was USA itself who armed FSR who then became ISIS… it was USA who armed the FSL who the. Became ISIL… is the poor to none knowledge about the geopolitics that surrounds you that makes you create the same threats that then you are “afraid” of…
@Mansardian
@Mansardian 3 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with @mataloce: It is not really about McChrystal. It is about the attitude of the US in general. I think many also missed the essence of the controversy between Europe and the US. The British officer questioning the point of McMahon's operation. The German politician (great: Tilda Swinton, what a fantastic job! The accent was so authentic! I'm saying this as a German native speaker!) confronting McMahon with...well, the truth. And even now, so many Americans are still talking about "threats" out there that the US military need to protect them from... Let me be frank with you: The last real threat you had to deal with were the Japanese. Not even the Russians, as they always REACTED to things the US had done before. Cuba? Just a Soviet reaction to US-missiles in Turkey. That's something the film wanted to transmit at the end, by saying "we are creating new enemies, all on behalf of Americas security. What does that say about us?"

@@mataloce Actually it was Obama who prematurely leaving Iraq and letting all the guys we bagged over there out of Camp Bucca. In his own words,"I will see all of you in New York". Ibrahim Awad Ibrahim Al-Badri aka Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi! I was in and out of Iraq for over 6 years. I know what I'm talking about. The SOFA agreement was pure political BS! Maliki wanted us to stay and keep around 10,000 combat soldiers,fixed Aiw wing and rotary wing, and certain Special Operations assets in Balad Air Base, to make sure Iraq kept on the positive track it was on after the Surge and bringing the Sunnis back into the government with the Sons of Iraq movement. The Dora Market area of the Rashid District in Baghdad was the largest place of commerce and business. All Christian, Shia, and Sunnis had opened back up for business and were doing better than they all had done in over 50 years. The Sectarian violence completely disappeared and people's lives began to improve with finances and the overall renovation of the infrastructure. They were begging us not to leave. Biden even made the remark to Obama that they could take this foreign policy success and make it their own! That tells you everything you need to know and already know about Biden. Obama though, had to make the point that he was fulfilling one of his campaign promises to remove all troops by 2011. The Asymmetrical Warfare Group that was on the ground warned Obama, that things were just beginning to normalize in Iraq and if he pulled everyone out prematurely that things would spiral back out of control. The government was now free to breathe and really establish a strong national Army that would truly be able to fight on its own and to keep the influence of the Mullahs in Iran away from the positive growth within the government. We had pretty much exterminated Al-Qaeda's presence in the country by either killing them or capturing. We intercepted intelligence that reported that Al-Qaeda felt that Iraq was a lost cause for them and a waste of resources and it was time to move on to other countries that lacked a strong central government and cooperation with its people. So, thanks Obama and that group called the Islamic state in Syria or the Levant, turned out to be more than the JV Team for Al-Qaeda! SMH

I am not defending Obama but the Constitution and democracy. The honorable thing to do was step down if you cannot support legally elected officials, otherwise we are nothing but a banana republic run by generals. Truman fired MacArthur, and Lincoln fired almost all his generals. Disrespect by the military of elected officials should not be tolerated in a democracy. We should all thank him for his service, but also demand that he to the honorable thing.

Here's a real leader. Not a perfect man, but a real leader. It's sad that the Obama Administration was overly sensitive, and that a Rolling Stone reporter could only tell a slanted story (the author hated the Afghanistan War in part due to the death of his fiancee there ( www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/michael-hastings-rolling-stone-contributor-dead-at-33-20130618). Compare this to George Patton's frequent episodes of "mis-speaking" and you realize two things: first, that the remarks at a staff dinner are not really very offensive, and, second, that war leaders will often have a side that grates on a soft public. That's part of what makes them effective war leaders.

The uniforms of the American military are so gregariously ugly. I understand why a fighting soldier would wear clothes the put utility before any kind of aesthetics but come on give the generals some fancy threads. Napoleon understood the importance of the presentation for the leader. He would either dress down and wear his Grey overcoat or be in the uniform of the imperial guard. He did this to stand out and set himself apart from the rest of his men while giving himself a greater individuality thus encouraging his troops to see him as special. Thus increasing loyalty and growing the legend.
