As an Art school dropout, merch designer and screenprinter, it seemed that being a cultural “cusp-er” was where the impetus for radical change. I hope some young creators start rebelling against the generational Groupthink and Group-angst.

Generational differences interest me, but ultimately every generation just kinda goes with the flow of forces beyond their control & it's up to a small minority to lead the way (either to enlightenment or to damnation)

I remember the late 1990s was when Independent titles became dominant in literary culture. My friends who never touched comics in the 80s or early 90s, were reading Sandman and Preacher, or independent books like Love & Rockets, Hate, Persepolis, etc. by the early 2000s. This was also when you could find comics being sold at places like Barnes & Noble or WalMart (unheard of the '80s!) and The NYTimes or Spin Magazine would have issues devoted to popular graphic novels.

@@cartoonaesthetics ".....what happened..?" The same thing that happened to Hard Rock, Punk, Heavy Metal, Hip Hop.....mainstream acceptance killed an artform that began out of pure love and pain.

Now most bookstores have massive manga sections and only a single bookshelf dedicated to legacy comics like Watchmen

I've been a P-Bag fan since the mid 1980's . Fantagraphics used to send me free boxes of goodies to review for my zine and mainstream writing. Interesting about Peter's recent line work looking less polished since his early days. I wonder if the change is because of physical limitations as a boomer or if he consciously slacked on his earlier impeccable style or if he just grew tired and disenchanted with it and is just going through the motions. Fun to listen to a younger generation give a history lesson on the time I lived through. Still waiting for some studio to buy the rights from him for a full blown 3D Buddy Bradley movie.

great video, surprisingly analyzes the comic rly damn well even through i'm more of a manga/japanese comics reader, having a few of them in my life, i'm looking foward to it since i never read this one before so i can't wait for what you're doing next. and also i have this question since im fairly new to indepedent comics in general, which ones youd recommend?
@cartoonaesthetics15 күн бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video - besides Hate, I would recommend checking out the works of Daniel Clowes, Johnny Ryan, David Lapham, Charles Burns, Adrian Tomine, Robert Crumb - it all depends what you're into. Are you looking for more comedic stuff, or dramatic? What kind of genres do you like?
@Gantonio86515 күн бұрын
@@cartoonaesthetics Well, i mostly like drama and action and the former is what im looking for, but sometimes i also enjoy comedic stuff
@cartoonaesthetics14 күн бұрын
@@Gantonio865 I would recommend Daniel Clowes first & foremost because he's great at human drama, with a touch of humor - Ice Haven, Wilson, The Death-Ray, and Caricature (a collection of short stories) are all great books

This series was excellent (the videos I mean) what’s next for you? Crumb? Modern Underground cartoonists?
@cartoonaesthetics27 күн бұрын
It'll be something animation related. Crumb is a huge topic that will need to be broken down into more than one sub-topic. Even this series was just a sub-topic of Peter Bagge; there's other comics of his I'd like to talk about that would warrant their own (admittedly shorter) vids
