It wasn't about the song, it was about him. That left leg revolutionized rockabilly, country, blues until it became rock and roll. Before Elvis a singer would stand still and sing in front of the microphone. Teenagers finally had their own music in Elvis. He freed us to express ourselves.

Elvis has sold more records than any other recording artist. They really don't even know how many he has sold but it is over a billion. His satellite program was seen in over 40 countries, was the first satellite performance ever and was watched by 3 times as many people as the moon landing. He recorded so many records that you could actually do a different recording for nearly two years 750+ recordings. He was the entertainer of the 20th century and people of your generation probably don't realize how much he influenced culture of all types. There will never be another one like him.❤❤❤

How kind was Elvis? Enough to make sure the original singer of this song (Big Mama Thronton) got a royalty payment. Gave his all-black household staff new Cadillacs for x-mas, too. Boy, did Cnl. Parker know a star when he saw one--A white guy that sang and danced black style and handsome as a Greek God. What I love about him? How humble of a celebrity he was and his love for the African American going all the way back to his childhood.

he did not have an all black staff. he gave his cook a house. the colonel molded elvis and promoted him. if it was not for the colonel elvis would be singing gospel in the south somewhere for tammy baker and jimmy swaggart. don't ever compare elvis to a greek god. elvis was a puppet, greek gods were not.

Hi, I'm a 65 year old ex-Musician who was into Music from the 1940s thru 2000 and of course I know who Elvis is and the impact that he made on the word,a great song from Leiber & Stoller written for Big Mama Thornton who sang the original which didn't have the lyric "he never caught a rabbit". Remembering KZbin wasn't invented until 2005 so we didn't get videos or updates back in 1956 it was a big deal to see an artist live

There's another version of Hound Dog from the Milton Berle show where he broke into a slow pelvic grind and sent the audience into absolute hysteria, which got him almost banned from TV. After that they would only shoot him from the waste up and he was forced to make a semi-apology appearance singing to a basset hound dressed in a tuxedo.

There's really no way someone her age, born into a world that is so very different from the world (and the music) of the 1950s to even begin to have an appreciation for this performance. There had just never been anything like him before. Well, I take that back. Musically and in terms of stage moves and dance style, there were other's doing music like this but they were Black performers, hidden from view in smokey, dimly lit juke joints in the Deep South, in a VERY racially segregated USA, so the vast majority of White folks rarely (if ever) heard or witnessed anything quite like this. Imagine a world in which there's no such thing as a personal computer and no such thing as the internet. Then, suddenly, the computer appears on the market, this new thing called the internet is introduced into the culture, and it changes EVERYTHING. That's the impact that Elvis had on the social fabric of America when he appeared on the scene. You'll hear people say he "stole" Black music. It's a ridiculous accusation. First of all because no one "owns" a style of music. It's not "owned" by anyone then, by definition, it can't be "stolen". Secondly, and more importantly, he grew up in what today would be called a "Poor White Trash" family living in a financially impoverished section of town in which his neighbors and childhood playmates were Black kids and White kids. Basically, a ghetto situation. Elvis didn't "appropriate" Black culture. He was born and raised in the thick of it.

you misunderstand him stealing music. the term should be black artists music. that is a concept elvis fans will never understand or they will deny it. he didn't steal the music of black artists, his promoter did. the colonel paid bid $ for song writers to write stuff for elvis. Elvis was just his puppet. elvis was not raised in the ghetto, he spent some time there, and as elvis playing with black children, all children played together elvis was no saint. the colonel made elvis and the colonel destroyed elvis and elvis allowed it, because he was a puppet.

Always remember - girls from that time lived when there were no male strippers, everyone on a magazine cover was fully clothed, no nudity or cursing in movies or TV, and no internet. The moves and music you just heard - were the closest that girls in those days came to anything "sexually suggestive". Now those moves would be no big deal. But back then, police wanted to put Elvis in jail for them. Also, many girls and their mothers liked his looks. Watch the "Milton Berle Show Elvis performance of this same song. THAT'S the performance that "went viral" and controversial in 1956 and it was before this Ed Sullivan performance. Merry Christmas!

Not sure Elvis liked this song but it was a big hit for him. Back then he was sensored & was at one point not allowed to be shown from the hips down. Elvis changed not only music, but pop culture. Watch anything from 1968 Comeback Special, 1970 Las Vegas, or 1973 Aloha From Hawaii (the 1.5 billion satellite viewers when world population was approximately 4 billion or less). Those are tip of the Elvis experience but may give you a better idea of his vocal & performance talents than this one. Either way, Elvis have many faithful fans that will guide you if you are interested in learning more.

Hi and thanks for your reply, If only I could have been there to see Elvis in the 50's alas I am too young. However, I do not make my comment flippantly or with disrespect to any generation, I make it having read, listened to and watched Elvis's peers in the music business make these comments, I have read countless articles by music experts who document the evolution of music down the decades and some centuries. I also take on board all of what has been spoken by the people or actual teenagers of the day who witnessed a music revolution unfold before their eyes. Today we have countless musicians currently recording that sight Elvis as a major influence on their music journey. You can also go watch the music of the time and you will see performers on stage not doing what Elvis would later do and did. If you are serious to know, there are countless videos and references online and in books that I would be more than happy to link or direct you towards. Most artists if not all, once you've seen one of their shows, you. have roughly seen them all. You will get the same kind of thing all the time. but Elvis never did 2 shows or songs the same. even in the 50s. Let alone the 60s and 70s.

@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 Yes 76 -77. Perhaps some of 75. But 1970 he was different to 72. 73 different again. To 74. 75. 68 tv show. Completely different. Even his looks in them areas. Again in the 50s -60s. I'm just saying you don't get the same thing all the time.

@@colmflaherty3963 just because my comments don't fit your narrative towards Elvis, does not make me not like him, it simply gives me the opportunity to tell it how it was.
