Tommy, get yourself a "descaler" for your frame from HarborFreight. It'll be easier than wire wheels.
@charleybetts1053
@charleybetts1053 2 жыл бұрын
Really? How's it work?
@1982MCI
@1982MCI 2 жыл бұрын
@@charleybetts1053 it’s a pneumatic tool and it’s got about 20 round steel fingers about 6”-10” long that shoot back and forth at different intervals and it strips the rust and scale right off the steel and leaves a smooth surface for refinishing. He can probly get one at harbor freight for $25-$30 but will be some of the best money he has ever spent in that store! Another good alternative is to see if there is someone in the Columbus area and I’m sure there is with a mobile, dustless blasting rig that will come out to the shop and it uses a combination of water and an aggregate depending upon what’s being blasted, that will have that frame clean in under an hour. Those systems do not leave any sand or dust behind that will interfere with the painting process.

Tommy, after you clean up all of the rust get a gallon of ospho metal treatment at your local paint store, this product will convert any remaining rust and make it ready for paint. We used this offshore to control rust. You can also spray it in the area’s that you can’t get to with a wire wheel or a needle gun. ❤️❤️ the channel 👍👍🤠
@snopro5714

If you don't have an air scaler you can use a body hammer pick side and tap, tap, tap on the scaley rust. Like knocking the slag off from a stick weld. Everything here in the upper peninsula of Michigan has rust on it. Have fun and keep learning.

Bro I've tried that before it won't work and then you'll have nothing but trouble it'll cause you more work and you'll regret it been there and done that
@dw1370
@dw1370 2 жыл бұрын
Those trucks will last forever. To get the rust off use an air scalar, much better then a wire wheel. Use a rust encapsulator to use on the frame. You have to keep that bed. You don’t see many of them around. They have plenty of parts available. Gotta like having people around to help you out especially Uncle Bucko.Keep up the good work
@DWO619
@DWO619 2 жыл бұрын
It won't work if you want to get the rest off get you some sandpaper and that's the best way to do it these guys are telling you to do this and do that it's just going to cause you more work in the long run it's just some sandpaper and get the rest off and you'll have a nice clean area to work with you won't have to patch anything up hang in there buddy looking good already
@1982MCI
@1982MCI 2 жыл бұрын
@@DWO619 the tool he’s talking about takes the big chunks of rust scale off that will do nothing but shred your sandpaper the second it hits it. I think Tommy is planning on using a rust encapsulating type paint to coat the frame with and with that product you DO NOT want to remove the rust with sandpaper. It’s recommended by the manufacturers of POR 15 and other suitable products to leave as much of the surface rust as possible, do not sand the areas to be coated, and apply the product directly over the surface rust. If there is rust scale, then that needs to be removed hence why several guys recommended it because it does do a fantastic job of removing it instead of using a wire wheel to try and remove it and end up with half of it in your lungs and the other half in your eyes! It gently knocks any and all loose rust scale off and after a blowdown with the air hose, leaves it with a surface ready to apply the encapsulating paint. The more surface rust there is on metal, the better the paint product will work. This is for the POR 15 or SEM style of rust encapsulating paints that actually convert the iron oxide into a strong metal saving primer that forms a finish as tough as the steel frame itself. This is not a job for a Rustoleum product or Tommy’s favorite paint in the world, the amazing hammer finish paint he loves so much. Now if this were a body panel or something else besides a frame then I’d agree with you concerning cleaning the rust away with a good heavy paper after any scale was removed to be able to get down to good clean steel again but this is a completely different situation and if you apply the rust encapsulating paint to clean metal then it will possibly fail and flake off because there was no rust for the conversion process of the iron oxide to convert into a primer giving the paint nothing to actually stick to or bite into and then in a few years tommy will be right back where he is now with a rusty frame again and all this work will have been done in vane. So technically, both of you guys are really correct but it ultimately depends upon the final process that’s being applied that determines which process you use. Hopefully that makes sense cause sometimes my brain doesn’t explain things the right way anymore! Getting old sure sucks!! Sorry for the long comment but thanks for listening!! Take care and be safe out there!!

It probably doesn't seem like it to you now, but you're living the life that many wish they had a chance to live! Tommy, do you want to just do a frame swap on that truck with a nice, rust free southern frame? Ive got buddies here in NC with stuff like that sitting around and since your planning on a motor change anyways it would only be unbolting 4 cab bolts and your front clip and move it all over to the new one, put new bushings in and bolt it back down. The frame would be under $500 and probly in the $2-$300 range which I think would be a wise investment but it’s your call buddy. If your interested, I’ll dig one up for ya ang get it as cheap as possible for ya or you can proceed with the old one. Just wanted to throw it out there for ya tho. Would be quicker and easier Edit: frame doesn’t look near as bad once bed and stuff was off and shouldn’t be too bad. It looked a lot worse when you couldn’t see everything. Good job young man!

I’m with the old man, I think your gonna love this truck! The engine and transmission you have picked out will be perfect. Figure out some kind of traction supplier to the rear axle as it will need the attention with that much hp. Another thing to look into is the sloppy steering and spongy brakes in these trucks. Easy fix with some research. I myself have a 93 GMC and I hope to see this truck of yours being enjoyed!!
