Thank you Iryna! I like how you said, "there are many exceptions and going over them would take too much time!" Правда!

Thanks so much. I'm doing Duolingo for Ukrainian and already finished the first tree last tree of lessons now i'm on the second level of each lesson and the gender is confusing me as a native English speaker. It's still confusing how things that end in "Ya" or "a" can be neuter instead of fem.

I am sure you know by now, but they are feminine, because they exceptions to the rule and not the standard. For instance, I thought собака was feminine until recently, when a friend explained to me that it is actually masculine. Who knew!? Fortunately Ukrainian has far less exceptions to the rules than English does. However, like English, Ukrainian is a beautiful mix of many different languages that have merged over the centuries and when you have merged languages, you have exceptions. Just like Iryna's example of мати, mother is obviously feminine because of the nature of the word, however, its spelling would not say so. Other exceptions are not so obvious and you simply learn them through time and use of the language... or you don't and that's okay too.

For now just remember: 1) consonant is male 2) A and YA is female 3) O and E are neuter 4) Words that are obviously male (i.e. father & uncle) and words that are obviouse female (mother & aunt) For strarters these rules are the most important, but as shown in this lesson, there are quite a few exeptions.
