One of the most beautiful songs Gene ever recorded. Long live the memory of Harold Eugene Clark. He is in my mind and heart every day. I can never forget him.

"Two sides to Every Story" is a great record. I remember a David Crosby interview and he is responding to the Byrds being billed as 'Americas answer to the Beatles' and he says: "The Byrds were never in the Beatles league, ever". I think Gene Clark was.

i might have to agree! i first got into Gram through his assoctaion with the stones, and just ALWAYS reading about him in stuff. I only vaguely knew of Gene Clark, even as the lead singer of the Byrds! Gram is not chump change by any means, but there is a deepness, even darkness, to Gene Clark's music, and possibly the person, that is indeed pretty rare. I cant think of many quite like him in his depth of emotion, and eloquence in singing with this emotion.

What a talent! Without Gene, as we all came to find out, the Byrds were just another band from the 60's. But that First Byrds album still ranks in my top 5 of all time.........

I think it was Chris Hillman who said something like it was incredible the way Gene was able to write so many good songs. Songs of such depth and clarity with such poetic impact -even though he was not a seemingly well-educated person, he was just in touch with something truly universal and deep when he wrote a song.
@lastnamefirst4035
@lastnamefirst4035 4 жыл бұрын
Ive heard that. But wth does "well educated" mean Did any of the other Byrds have more than a high school education? Almost sounds like a socal snobbery being gene was from the midwest. I outta know, living in socal and we think people in the midwest are a bunch of hicks
@christineparker8020

Hillman also said that Gene was very intelligent, just not well read. No one else ever could come up with the lyrics he did and weave them through the melodies like he did. He was pure genius, and his voice was magical; almost supernatural.

Somebody gave me his copy of White Light in 1975 because I was into the Byrds... best present I ever had. Then No Other came out a couple of months later. What an amazing time! Gene gave people exactly what they needed, too.

It's not a competition, folks. You know them is because their music was of extremely high quality and totally their own. Think Gram Parsons is a lightweight? Listen to "Hickory Wind" or "Return of the Grievous Angel". Clark was dismissed as a cheap imitator of Bob Dylan, but with songs like "Hear the Wind" or "Full Circle Song", he was clearly beyond that. These men made enough to live quite well because of their music. Their fans are in the thousands. Cheap shots indicate small minds.

I like GP but Gene Clark added amazing feeling to his work. I am not sure which of his songs is my favorite but his cover of "I really dont want to know" and Clark and McGuinn's cover of Knockin on Heaven's door are the best. I can listen to his Roadmaster album over and over and never get tired.

with Gram, i hate to say, there is a touch of novelty in some of his songs (not all of them, mind you!). With Gene, you are completely taken on a journey that's slightly vague and indescribable, possibly melancholy. and its his own legitimate folk/country/ballad/rock/pop hybrid.

With apologies to Gram Parons fans - he was never anything more than a pretty face in a loud shirt imitating THIS guy.Gene Clark was the real deal.It is an absurdity that Parsons is more well known than Clark.But that won't last forever.Clark's body of work will not be denied by music history.When the pictures fade and smart folks go looking for the great MUSIC they'll find Clark.The future will be very good to Gene Clark.

"If I die and see Gram I'll know I'm in hell" Gene Clark. A pair of brilliant innovative and deeply melancholy songwriters and singers. If could have added a soprano it would have been sandy Denny.

"he was never anything more than a pretty face in a loud shirt" what a naive statement. you must not know anything about parsons. i agree that gene is "better", but denying parsons impact and influence on music is just dumb! the dude also wrote some beautiful lyrics...gene covered one of the best (if not the best) gram's composition - hot burrito #1

The difference between Gene Clark and Gram Parsons? GC was a true artist. His songs will age well as will his legacy. GP aspired to be what GC actually was....an artist. In doing so he did draw some attention to himself. But his body of work pales in comparison. Here your comparison...GC is a mighty oak tree. GP is a potted plant in a pretty vase.
