Gene was my friend for almost 30 years. We worked together on a half dozen album releases in the 1970's and 2000's and I interviewed him for radio programmes 19 times. The last time we met was his Hull concert, a week before his passing. One of the nicest guys in the business.

Last few days i've been unable to stop whistling this tune, i only heard it a few times as a young kid so its inexplicable that all of a sudden i start playing it in a loop in my mind. I think someone is trying to send a message. Maybe its a message to you. Changing the Wave. Changing the rules.

Every significant event in my younger life had a Gene Pitney song attached to it. Every time my heart got broke I turned to Genre's music. I was devastated when he died! :( RIP GENE

From the age of 12 (1962) Gene has always been a facet in my life ! During times of teenage despair his music was there to make life good again, or during the pain of teen age love lost Genes' songs helped carry me through the hurt and pain of lost loves ! During my high school years I would sometimes (don't tell on me LOL) skip school and drive up to Rockville (in Connecticut where I reside) just to be on Hammond Street and see his childhood home and know that he walked these very streets when he was young! Gene was my hero then, and these many years later he remains so !

I heard him being interviewed on a U.K. radio station just before he died. He came across as such a genuine decent man. RIP Gene

Never heard this version.... it would have been too long back in 1966 but it works very nicely here. Love this song and the version with Marc Almond.

I wish the best movies, that always have a nice love story, would be put on youtube and other platforms in their original version before the cuts...when they're 20+ hours long.
@Marcel_Audubon5 жыл бұрын
so interesting! I never found the abrupt ending of the 'official' Gene Pitney recording to be at all satisfying. It's as if the engineer just decided to turn the volume down and end it without telling the performers. This ending is much more elegant and actually let's the song complete. Wonderful.

Agreed. (Although that's just what they did back then.) Just wish the OP hadn't left all that empty tape at the end.

Got to see Gene in concert about 8 months before he left us. It was my 1st time. The concert was great. This alternate version is just a bit slow. I love the duet version he did with Marc Almond. Look for it and I think you will agree that this version is the best.

Well I think the story is...Song was written by Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway (aka David and Jonathan). They recorded it (not sure if it was released) and Gene Pitney wanted to record it. He went back to USA and tried to record it but wasn’t happy with the backing so he asked Cook and Greenaway if he could use their original backing track. Which he did, with some added orchestral bits. Now, which track is which I don’t know. There’s a KZbin video of Cook or Greenaway explaining the story. Cook and Greenaway were brilliant and prolific songwriters.

Wow. I was trying to figure out why it was a rare version then I heard the riff. Definitely not on the single I bought in the 60's in UK or an album version and not with Marc almond's duet

conclusion: (no strings on my or on the version here andvocals different). Viola and/or violoncello start 26-27 secs. Musicor added them at Bell Sound session. Vocal likely changed. Exhausted Pitney could not hit high note "Maybe". Kid hanging out in the studio sang it. Likely the alternatives (which may be the same) are the track(s) Pitney brougth with him. website in prior post needs 3ws. Thomas J McKeon Indianapolis.

Addendum has been added to my review of The Mentalist episode Soundtrack with original UK hit "Something`s Gotten Hold of My Heart." Think everything covered here. Typo below: sentence should read "Exhausted Pitney could not hit high note "BABY". Kid hanging out in the studio sang it." CORRECTION is "BABY" not "Maybe" as high note. Alternative versions (mine & Rogers) may be the same "Something`s Gotten Hold of My Heart." and is/are likely the track(s) Pitney brought with him. Thomas J McKeon

Hi Roger, was this a trick question you put out there? Seems the videos starts and ends with the answer I think, without scrutinizing both versions, first thought was it's quite polished and my thoughts immeadiately are to Gene's vocal track for the duet with Marc Almond 👍
@azzaz18 жыл бұрын
Was this recorded at American Studios, where the Box Tops also recorded?
@EsMachNichts11 жыл бұрын
See addendum to my IMDb review of Gene Pitney "Something`s Gotten Hold of My Heart." in "The Mentalist" 'Red John's Rules' imdb.com/title/tt2756144/reviews?ref_=tt_ov_rt (Spent days remastering familiar Pitney song from master source. Just finished & heard it in the show!) Then I came upon similar alternative (have not compared A-B). Both are 3:59 to 4:00min. not 4:21. Addendum not yet added, thus: Pitney cut song in England. When back in States he realized no strings!
