Some people diss this era of golfers as out of date and not able to compete with the new era golfer. These guys had fantastic swings and could compete in any era with ease once they had time to get used to the current equipment. On the other hand many of todays best would struggle with the equipment these guys had to play and would not be stars if they were thrust back in time.

Gene wrote a book around 1950 entitled, "Thirty Years of Championship Golf". You will find it to be a thoroughly interesting and enjoyable read and I recommend it. You will learn how a poor, little Italian boy from New York ended up playing golf with the King of England. It has a lot of humor plus some very valuable golf advice. I suppose you can still get it on line and it is worth every nickel.

Reading it right now. (1st edition, 2nd hand from AbeBooks) Just finished the passage covering the great caddie Skip Daniels. Pure emotion. It was composed 'with' Herbert Warren Wind so it's beautifully written. Not finished yet, but it's a MUST for golf literature fans.

Awesome footage! Lately I've been paying a lot of attention to the lead/front foot movement, on drives, from the downswing, through impact and just after. As a Junior (25+ years ago) I used a tip out of "Golf My Way" _Jack Nicklaus, where my lead/left heel would lift during the backswing, then I'd make a concious effort to slam the left/lead heel down into the turf at impact. It really helped my timing and ball striking. What peaked my interest about the lead foot on drives, is the way I've seen the instruction change. Then last summer I saw an interview with Phil Mickelson and Long Driver/Trickshot artist, Jamie Sadlowski. They were going over the tweaks Phil has implemented, that have kept and increased his driving distance. One commonality that they pointed out, and that I found intriguing, was how both Phil & Jamie actually have their lead foot off the ground thru impact! I didn't even notice it, until they slowed it down and pointed it out. Sure enough, both of them have their front foot off the ground completely, just after impact. It's actually a subconscious move to protect their knee. They generate so much power, that if they were to plant their foot, all that force would quickly destroy their knee and could even harm their lead hip. Maybe I'm weird, but I find the changes and optimizations of swing fundamentals and techniques, due to technology, very interesting. I figure if I can't stop my crappy swing from being crappy, atleast I'll understand and be able to explain just why it's so crappy. Thanks again for these great clips of GS!

Correction: Only one man has won golf's Grand Slam-- Bobby Jones. Sarazen accomplished the "Career" Grand Slam.

Ben Hogan was similar similar to this swing only difference all night with shorter but Hogan swing a lot like Gene
