@@josephtafur The last rock song to hit #1 on Billboard was almost 24 years ago. As a cultural influence or even having any cultural impact at all, rock is dead and has been for some time. As a rock musician, it pains me to say it but it’s a fact. Based on the most popular songs of the last couple of years, it appears young males, typically rock’s key demographic, aren’t even interested in music. Simmons is correct, rock music became a casualty of high tech, the internet specifically. Rock's legacy artists- Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Devo, The Beach Boys, Motley Crue, The Pretenders, Paul Simon, Sting, etc. all have sold their song catalogs because they can't make money on royalties alone anymore. The business model of grooming a rock act for the big time no longer exists, except for American Idol type of acts, which is based on image, looks, social media appeal, not on musical talent. It is a sad world where the biggest touring act is now Taylor Swift, and not a younger rock n roll band.

It's more than the Internet, but that's a huge thing. It's a combination of things. Prior to about the year 2001, most radio stations in the country were owned by about a couple of dozen companies. Back in 1996, Congress passed the Telecommunications Act, which basically revamped the radio frequencies to allow wireless Internet and cellphone coverage. They also tried to deregulate the radio industry to allow new people to jump into having their own radio station. Now, conspiracy-minded people out there might see what I'm about to say next as "this was what was intended," but I don't think it was. What happened was that two or three companies began consolidating most of the radio stations in the country, by amassing capital and buying out these stations. So, now, it's Cumulus and Clear Channel, and I think one or two more, who own most of the radio stations. What they then did was, like any corporation, they decided to trim out the "fat," so to speak. They saw all these stations had a program director, the guy who's responsible for anything that goes on the air, to include programming. So, they eliminated them and consolidated program directing to their HQs in places like NYC and LA. Prior, we had a program director for every station, today it's like a few for hundreds of stations across the country. The DJs used to have a lot of leeway in picking new songs to play on the air, because back then radio stations wanted to be the one who discovered the next big star. Today, they have almost no autonomy to do anything like that, and only play what has already been pre-programmed to play. This severely narrows the gateway to entry into the music business for new musicians. If you ever wondered why most new music sounds the same, it's because most of the execs at Cumulus and Clear Channel have the same basic tastes. By the way, this is also what helped kill country, which hasn't existed as real country music since at least 2000. Because of all this, record labels take fewer risks with new artists. It used to be that they might bankroll a new artist they thought had potential, and would, at their own expense, put them into their own studio to make songs. Today, all of that has changed. They now charge artists, new or existing, exorbitant amounts of money to use their studios. This is because, thanks to streaming services, nobody buys whole records anymore, and new artists would be lucky if anyone heard their song on a streaming service, because most people prefer to stream songs they like, rather than to try something new. This means that a record label can't reliably make money off an artist as they once were able to do. And streaming services don't pay anyone very much money for their work. Maybe a nickel every time a song is streamed, at the most, due to how streaming services work. Back in the day, most musicians didn't make a whole lot in royalties off their own albums, but now they make even less. All of this, by the way, is why you see a lot of performers out there touring for years on end without making a new album. That's because they make little to no money on the albums themselves, as they personally have to pay for the recording room and the time for the session. A typical session to crack out an album might cost a band upwards of $300,000, minimum, and there's no telling if and or when they'll make their money back on that. So they have to tour. Something has got to be done, and I think the best thing to do is to A) break up the radio monopolies, and B) attack the streaming services. Artists need to demand more money from them. I think, also, PROs (Performer Rights Organization) contracts need to be revised to help artists make money in this regard off of royalties from radio stations.

Rock has been dead for a while and modern music sucks. Just look at the bb top ten entertainers of the 21th century and compare that to the artists from the 20th century. MJ & The Beatles alone were so massively talented.

I'll tell you about the current state of music. Songs with no melody whatsoever. The lyrics are mostly ignorant and monotone at best. One good thing, the rhythm. And more, no inspiration to lift the spirit, and worst part, one chord, the whole song.

Rock n Roll is there you need to find it and support it. The companies find it more lucrative to push these simpler cheaper manufactured acts. Gene should know he pushed Baby MEtal.

I think it's more complicated than simply pirating music online. Touring makes a lot of money for a good band, and getting a lot of music out there, even if much of it is free, can equate to publicity. The "old way" of the actual, breathing DJ; down at the radio station, spinning records, wasn't exactly a money hose for bands. There were numerous musical styles which went out of fashion way before the internet came along.

A) Artists can and do make money off sharing their music here on youtube. You can make millions if your videos do well. B) The idea that musicians get paid for recorded music instead of live performances was a 70 year blip, that treated some people in that 70 years very well. Now musicians are back to the long line of history where they must sing and play for their supper again. The business model has returned to the norm. The recording phase for money is what's dead. But then again, if your video is a hit, well you are still set to make money there.

Most up-and-comers are going country, where the mainstream support is. But never fear, kids like Wolfgang VanHalen are going to keep rock and roll alive.
