Gene's a pretty easy going guy who loves and takes his bass playing with ❤️. I'm a big fan of his and I love hearing him talk and hearing him play.

I've always liked Gene's bass playing. I'm not pleased with the current state of "KISS" but i'm not gonna knock his playing. It's nice to see him actually talk about his playing.

I admire the hell out of that guy. Great intellect. Great rock and roller he combines both,which is really rare.

This is very cool. Very rarely does he get asked about his instrument and playstyle. Gene's bass lines were always nice to hear, because it did have that big band horn section. It reminds me of Wilson Pickett, Jackie Wilson, etc.

Gene can fucking play...!!!!
@troymetzger862610 жыл бұрын
No, he can't. His only impressive bass line is in rock n roll all night. Not to mention that kiss songs are all power chords. So it's not hard to play a kiss song on guitar.
@madmichaelmathieu10 жыл бұрын
I respect your opinion Troy, but disagree man. I'm a guitar player and several songs from their catalogue are trickier than the simple G, A, C, etc that EVERY band, including AC/DC, Van Halen, etc. uses. But back to the point, Gene's bass lines have been covered by guys like Jeff Pilson, Dave Ellefson, and a variety of others who have all said he is a kick ass player. Just because a song is simple in structure doesn't mean anybody can play it either. It's about feel and groove. Gene has both.

+Troy Metzger wrong. Gene is a melodic very McCartney esque player. He has one ear to drums and other ear to the melody and guitars. That's a great thing to have. KISS was never meant to be hard. That's why they are so influencial. They were often the start for many players of all abilities. Laying down Victor Wooten style grooves in a band like KISS would sound totally out of place and inappropriate. Just like KISS riffs would sound inappropriate in a fusion band. the mark of a great musician is knowing where you fit in your situation. Gene doesn't need to be anything other than a bass player playing KISS music, just like Johnny Ramone doesn't need to play Yngwie Malmsteen stuff in the Ramones. Imagine how bad that would sound?

a lot of people just bash Genes bass playing because they dont like him as a person but i tend to separate the two, Gene can be a complete asshole at times but that doesnt mean his basslines especially early 70s were really well written and melodic, sure he wasnt a virtuoso but they served the songs really well
@mejsjalv Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Not so fond of his public "rock star" persona, but still, a lot of respect for his playing (love me some Detroit Rock City especially). I also admire when he did a radio interview for Hungarian radio mostly in Hungarian. Tough language to learn and tough to keep. there's a clip of him also in Hungarian where he meets a fan. Very wholesome actually. He has lived a very interesting life even before Kiss.

IMO, Genes' early bass work (first 3 albums) was pretty damn good stuff. Then he became "Gene Simmons" the famous rock star and relied more on his name than his abilities and talent. He wants to take a stab at Cliff Williams (AC/DC) for his lackluster bass playing, a lot of Genes "crap" from the 80s was that same style..
@01artist7 жыл бұрын
Gene could play in the 80's if you really listen to KISS. If I could take out the bass parts to most of Gens 80's work like Saint and Sinner and Rock and Roll Hell you'd be talking a bit different.
@gregaustin78957 жыл бұрын
He sold more records then Cliff Williams so he is allowed to take a stab at him if he wants to.
@01artist7 жыл бұрын
The way Cliff Williams played was great for the style of music AC/DC makes. It works put great. If he did the same style as Gene in early KISS it wouldn't sound right. They way Gene played in early KISS worked out great for that KISS sound.
@damiankarras6 жыл бұрын
He wasn’t taking a stab at Cliff. AC/DC’s music is different than Kiss’. A solid rhythm section is what AC/DC’s music demands. They are one of Gene’s favourite bands. Kiss’ music just has more variety in styles to allow for spaces to allow for those cool bass licks. The guitar riffing isn’t as dominant.
@Rockpig19696 жыл бұрын
@@gregaustin7895 I doubt he's sold more than AC/DC with Cliff Williams.

Gene doesn't under AC/DC writing style. Brian Johnson and Bon Scott both did the lead parts but with their vocals. Angus and the rest were the rhythm parts and Cliff and the drummer kept the beat and it worked out great for their style of songwriting. Gene was more from the classic rock and Motown, big band and swing style of music hence his song Saint and Sinner which had a distinct heavy metal swing rock sound to it. Gene never understood the power of a single knock out punch because he likes the fancy footwork of Ali.

Gene "I'm smart" Simmons is forgetting as he disses AC/DC bass that John Paul Jones is nothing but 16th notes during the song Rock and Roll, certain songs call for certain things.

You know why he wears that Cover. I personally gave that Marines cover to him back stage in Alabama . I'm a Disabled Marine with 16 years of service to my Country . Gene was very humble when I gave it to him . I told him to wear it with pride . Tomthemarine .
