⚠️Generator safety tips: This is only a reminder 1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Children often get curious about anything so we should keep an eye on them to also make sure they’re not wandering towards the generator. 2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house. 3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. 4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords. Hope this helps.

Awesome !! I work on LP standby generators of many brands. A few weeks ago I was called out on a B&S 20KW that was not transferring back to utility after a power fail. When talking to the customer, they explained , a service company replaced the transfer switch circuit board. When comparing the factory schematic to the switch wiring I discovered "mis-placed" connections. Luckily when I returned the stake-ons to all to their proper locations everything functioned as normal again. So, when changing out wiring, label, label and take a few pics !!!! Great vids, very carefully made and informative...thanx for sharing your discoveries...

That stator looked new, the brushes looked pretty damned new and the bolts on the cover had been recently opened. Someone got this, put in the new bits but it didn't work because they replaced the wires wrong. Thinking it was the same problem as before, they sold it on with some story about it suddenly stopping.

I am a master electrician and use one of these XG 10000E units as a whole house backup generator with a Reliance Controls manual transfer switch. I have had it for going on 5 years and exercise it monthly for around a half hour and refill the tank annually with stabilized ethanol free fuel. I turn the fuel off each time and let the engine stop for lack of fuel. Have never had a problem. Runs the entire house with out a hiccup. Can switch from utility power to generator power and back and the computers don't even sense the switch! Excellent video, keep up the good work!

I'm retired now, but for the last 20 years of my career I was a troubleshooter for several elevator companies. When you get into multiple commercial elevator systems sometimes the problems are mind numbing. And the best part is you are always coming behind multiple mechanics who have done god knows what to try to fix, coverup, and get away from that damn building any way they can. I think the consistently worst one had a 7.5 kw dc exciter to drive the 50kw generator to drive each hoist motor. These were in 8 car groups with over 2300 6 pole relays in each machine room for the bank of cars. O yeah, each car also had another generator with 8 different fields to control the 50kw main generator. And 2 synchronous motors to drive a double sided 16 cam contact assembly for speed control. and every once in a while everything would run. It was lovely. It was like a vacation day. Good job, CHEERS. Joe.

After the wires were mistakenly swapped, it affected the voltage output, and the excitation pot was. Diddled with , but it did not work, of course. When you first got power out of it, the voltage was double what it should have been, I think one mistake in wiring, lead more mistakes, like dominos..... You deserve cudos for sticking with it, and setting it right. The extra reward you got is the experience, so you can remember it in future scenarios....GOOD JOB...!!!

I worked for twenty some years as a hvac and burner mechanic and went on to ddc and single loop controllers and ended up doing building automation. That was almost twent years ago and not long ago I was trying to fix my ac on my 4Runner. It had an electrical problem and took me for ever to find electrical digram for it on the web. Found bits and pieces to get a whole print of the circuit. But my age and forgetfulness sure showed its head troubleshooting of all I have forgotten. Took me six months to finally find the problem. Always heard if you don't use it you loose it. I sure did.

A lot of this class of generator have a 3 year warranty. There are documents out there on how to screw one up so that it just won't produce any power output. The devious owner can take it back and get a replacement before the warranty ages out. Most of the Box Stores will start it, see it produces no power and warranty it. Even in a smaller shop, the tech may not dig as deep as you did. Nice catch, sweet fix.

Had a brake light problem once on my Dad's Car, he took it to a "Repair" shop "where they had repaired on it " by cutting the factory wiring @ the tail light and scabbing on another wire to a wrong location; and took his money and did NOT address the problem which when I checked it found that the turnsignal interrupter switch for the rear brake/turnsignals had a bad contact!
@jcondon13 жыл бұрын
Nothing worse then a bad repair. A long time ago the brake light same on in my car. Brought it to the dealer and paid a lot to have it fixed. A couple of months later my brakes failed on the highway. Thankfully I noticed before exiting the highway. Turns out, the dealer unplugged the sensor from the master cylinder. Gotta love the way people fix things.

I know this is from a year ago and I haven’t read all of the comments, but the reason you weren’t reading current on your ac clamp meter is because you need to pass the wire through the jaws. You were trying to measure ac current through the ohms/volts plugs on the clamp meter. That being said, I am envious of your finds - I would love to do this as a hobby, but lack a garage and a pile of spare parts and a source of broken machinery!

Here is a reminder about portable generator safety: this is only a reminder for anyone who use portable gas/propane generators. This is just to make sure that everyone is aware of all the warnings and it’s just to remind people to be careful using portable generators. Everyone has to see this safety reminder. Every year after hurricane and winter storms, there were reports on the news that many people have died each year when using generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution during a power outage. There were reports about deaths when using generators when the power was out. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Here’s an advice about generator safety: please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide and seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Please do not permit a child or unqualified people to operate the portable generator. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. Very good find James! The XG and XP series are some of the best portables you can buy. The engine speed is an mechanical governor but electronically assisted with a stepper motor. The 2nd board inside is what controls it. The stepper keeps the droop within 2% of the set speed of the mechanical governor. They are tricky to adjust, and generac has a separate white paper how to adjust certain control boards for gain, droop, and stability with dynamic loads like motors. If that board doesn't have the 3 pots on it, and just two dip switches, then those settings are preset and you can only adjust 50/60hz speed, and the direction the stepper motor moves for adjustment since the board was used on many machines mounted in different directions

Apparently the govenor can not regulate the speed properly or the engine can not make enough power in HP to sustain the load to maintain 60hz. It can not maintain 3560 PRM under load. Bottom line it is making reasonably good power. For the money ...........a great deal. You know your stuff. Good job.

This one was exceptional good except for the ability to follow exactly what you were doing. When you got into the weeds about the rewiring i understood what you were trying to do but could not picture it. I think this part was so useful and needs to be understood more clearly. I would request that you consider a part two to it and sketch out a drawing (schematic) to show what you were doing with the mis-wire, i.e. what it was and what you made as well as the meter ups so its clear. Thanks

Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I no longer have that generator. If I remember right, this generator had no access to the stator wires down in the powerhead. So I had to locate where leg 1, leg 2, And the DPE and sense windings up in the control panel and isolate them to test the ohms. By doing that I was able to determine that someone had connected the wires onto the wrong locations on the AVR.

As a comparison, a XG8000e I worked on for a friend was running at 59.6hz with a balanced ~5500w load. I tuned it to 61.5hz no load. It had very few hours on it. So this one simply must just be slightly tired or similar due to the hzdroop you saw. Anyway great video as always! :)

Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Make sure your generator is properly grounded. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2LNhWZ3g6qBrKs and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. Hope this helps and everyone understands the safety requirements. Thank you. Be safe.

That is a goid solid generator in great shape (especially for a construction site rig). My main concern would be the high hours on engine. Kind of looks like a Kohler. Merry Christmas!

What's your background? You are uncommonly good at doing research and solving electrical problems. The skills required for this kind of work are troubleshooting internal combustion engines and troubleshooting alternators and related control circuitry. Thanks - great video. I am now a subscriber.

Only do this as a hobby in nights and weekends. Implement and support large computer systems by day. Lots of problem solving.

@@jcondon1 Thanks again - explains a lot - especially why you are so well versed on hunting stuff (like manuals & wiring diagrams) down on the Internet. When you say you have to step away and have a think about something, you’re not kidding - that’s when you put those problem solving skills to work. I expect you are aware that the new generation (No play on words intended) of high power portable generators are inverter based (so no requirement for running at synchronous RPM) and they use EFI for effortless starting and running, so this adds a lot of complexity which means a lot more talent will be required to resolve problems with these units. That said, I expect these units to have much greater reliability and hence the demand for troubleshooting skills will no be as much in demand and as a result, probably much harder to find. Sorry for to long rant, I appreciate your videos.

I would totaly buy that entire generator from you even with the problems I have one of these power heads and I have one of the voltage regulator got them from a budy that was throwing them away just don't have the generator @James Condon

I have a Generac Dp3300, worked great last year. Went to use it yesterday during a power outage, and it's only producing low Voltage. Like I can plug a drill in but it spins super slow, and if I plug in a light it's super dim. Use to light up half of my house, and I noticed it will surge every once in a while and will produce enough voltage to properly run a light and a drill. But then dies right back down.

I wanna add my slip rings are quite dirty, and I tried to clean em up a bit. Kind of hard to get into mine with all the wiring under the cover. But maybe that's my issue.

Whaaaaat!? Awesome next level electrical troubleshooting, James! That will no doubt be invaluable to MANY over time. So when you discovered that some of the wires were connected wrong you KNEW someone had been behind the panel before you. I agree that the brushes looked way too good for 1500 hours so someone had presumably serviced it to get their money's worth. The green gas looked pretty clear to me so I wondered if it had some stabilizer that tints that color since it ran SO well with no change to the gas OR a carb cleaning. Thrilled that you were able to get it producing power again without resorting to parting it out. Was fun and educational to watch. Working on getting another Generac WheelHouse 5550 here soon I hope. Keep em coming and please feed the crickets this winter! You post a video without them and I'll quit watching! 😁

Nice job. It appears someone before you disconnected AVR and improperly reconnected it. I picked up a B&S Storm Responder with no voltage output and the problem was the brushes were improperly connected.

Nice troubleshooting job on that generator. It always amazes me how people will just never tell the real truth about the history of something they're trying to sell. That green gas may have been treated with Stabil marine fuel treatment. I'd pour in my car and use it.
