General Crime Information and Dangerous Areas of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

This is an overview of the general crime situation in Edmonton, Alberta - how Edmonton compares to cities globally and nationally, some specific issues the city is dealing with now and some specific areas of the city that have a sketchy reputation.
I will discuss some differences between the various regions of the city, and I cannot overstate that I am speaking in generalities and that what I am saying does not always apply. You will probably be okay wherever you are in Edmonton, but there are always risks in life and Alberta's capital city is certainly no exception.
Comparing Edmonton to cities around the world? It isn't too bad; you are more likely to be mugged or assaulted in most major European cities and Canada is a pretty peaceful and stable country overall.
But among Canada's largest cities, Edmonton does routinely rank near the top in terms of the overall crime severity index.
The most dangerous cities in Canada are actually some of the smaller population centers. Kelowna, Victoria and Red Deer all have higher overall crime rates than Edmonton.
Gun crimes have been increasing in Edmonton and they have been getting increasingly brazen and wild. Random attacks are not uncommon.
The disorder on the transit system got so bad last summer that the Edmonton police put out a news bulletin informing the general public to use extreme caution when using the trains and busses.
You'll probably be fine using transit in Edmonton, but I would generally advise not using transit after dark and relying on personal transportation as much as you can.
I think the north side of the city definitely has more potentially sketchy areas than the south side - 118 avenue, Clareview/Belvedere (particularly along the LRT tracks), 107 avenue, Stony Plain road, downtown eastside, etc.
But the southside definitely has issues too. Millwoods in general has had a bit of a reputation and some gang violence. Even Whyte avenue has gotten just a bit sketchier lately.
I will say that I think it is very important that people take their personal security seriously and exercise excellent situational awareness as much as possible.
I just wanted to offer my two cents on some dangerous/sketchy aspects of the city, but this obviously doesn't paint the complete picture of Edmonton.
This city is incredibly beautiful as well and it certainly has a lot to offer both local residents and potential newcomers.

I haven't watched any of my old videos in awhile, but I've been keeping tabs on the channel and noticed that this one was of greater general interest than a lot of the others. Thank you to everyone who has subscribed, liked, disliked and otherwise engaged with this video (and others!) - I am very new to video production/KZbin in general and I have been greatly encouraged and truly helped by all the warm feedback that I have received from people on my KZbin venture so far. I genuinely want to provide useful information and insight for people looking at Edmonton as a potential place to live. I thought my best attempt at a video that explored some of the sketchier elements of the city a fair and balanced way would be useful to some soul out there. I noticed that I tend to say certain words WAY too much, and man do I look dog tired in most of my earlier videos (as if somehow Freddy Mercury and Vince Vaughn produced a child with equal genetic contributions and then that kid just kinda wasn't chill on sleeping that much) - I was using harsher lighting then too and I'm kind of a red faced sweaty camper during the warmer months like a true Germanic. I don't live in a not air conditioned abode because I'm on a budget in a concerning North American economic climate, I do it for the environment! I'm definitely in the learning phase of making videos - how do Zoomer kids make amazing videos in 7 minutes that earn them enough money for a 2021 Audi at minimum? I take the new line to work everyday and practically every station has people doing drugs in the shelters. At first I was glad to have the better transit access, but now I worry about what kind of people are coming into my neighborhood since there's virtually no security on trains or in stations.

Fair explanations. As a former Edmontonian who has been living in Japan for the past 10 years and has never had to think twice about taking public transit at any time of day it’s unfortunate to hear that the LRT situation in Edmonton has degraded.

I moved to Edmonton from Winnipeg in 2004. I've lived all over the city throughout the years and I've been living by the Stadium since 2011. I love this city, however In the past 20 years I haven't seen things as bad as they are now. Since Covid it's only gotten exponentially worse. Just yesterday, I was taking the LRT and walking around downtown and the level of social depravity and chaos is on another level. Open drug use in every stairwell, intimidating thugs, garbage, encampments and junkies everywhere. It really feels like a third-world country. I'm only left asking myself "what the Hell happened to this place?"

even third world/developing countries are not like this. If you go to Senegal, Kenya, The Gambia, etc you would never in your life experience anything like this on their LRTs or even in general. Ive talked to some people here from those countries as well who were scared just taking Transit because they weren't used to the depravity. this is simply a western inner city problem especially when drugs are involved.

Born and raised Edmontonion here - I remember when the LRT expanded to Southgate. I was in high school/uni around that time and remember not really having any issues taking it late at night from Corona or from Coliseum (Stadium?) when I was working at Kdays. I even took the last LRT by accident and ended up in Clareview late at night for a minute - I was definitely spooked with the happenings that was going on, but I wasn't necessarily in fear of a random attack. Overall it felt like crime was specifically targeted at involved persons - but now it feels random and that's the scary part. As a parent, it's crazy how much this city has changed since I was a kid. But like you said, a lot of times you gotta go looking for crime for it to happen. Great videos man - hopefully this city will see better days

My husband and I moved here from Nova Scotia in 2021 and we haven’t taken a bus or train since we got here because of the bad reputation it has. We agree with needing to have a car, I would seriously fear for my life if I had to take transit every day! ETA when we first moved here we live off Whyte Ave which has a lot of bars/restaurants and university students. The area seems to be getting progressively worse as there have been several random acts of violence and the homeless population is getting worse as well.

People generally do have compassion for people struggling, though empathy does not mean people should be expected to sacrifice security I take transit I am so tired of people who commute by LRT or Bus being made out as being without compassion or respecting dignity when those people we should have compassion for go out of their way to intimidate people, are inconsiderate and blast loud music threw blue tooth speakers, vandalize all the stations and stops, drug use and violence ironically forcing people who are behaved into the cold while being told we need to be compassionate and let them warm up. The issue is having " problems" has been turned into a justification to tolerate anti social behaviours. Lots of people struggle and still manage to be respectful decent people. The issue is not that their isn't help it's that the help works for people who meet half way and actively work to improve their situation, it makes the situation worse when people exploit the help to enable dysfunction and those people bring down the quality of the aid for those who are trying.

I've lived in Mill Woods for the past 12 years. It has a quiet, suburban vibe with a lot of middle class families just living their lives. It even has a cricket league. I'd say visit the neighbourhood again if you haven't in a while. It's growing and developing in good ways. The bakeries have sweets you can't find anywhere else in the city.

I'm quite new to your channel. I thought I'd look at the Edmonton video because my dad's side of the family came from there. I appreciate your lucid, compassionate and fair-minded approach to things that happen that put a person down a path... which given their druthers, if they could have avoided it somehow, they would have. This world is absolutely NOT A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD. I'm Vancouver born and bred, and I love this town for sentimental reasons, but I'm ready to go. In recent years this city is quickly deteriorating (yeah, thanks developers, not). I wanted to relocate for a few years now, but the trouble has been finding a place I think I will like. I really think I have to give up on appreciating the things that go with a larger centre, because small-town is more my heart. Edmonton is still on the radar though, because of family in the area. I just started the video so I'll have to see what I think by the end 😄

Born and Raised here in Edmonton. My parents as well were born and raised here. You are bang on 100% correct! I grew up and still live on the NorthEast side. Back in the early 90's 97th st had the same reputation as 118 ave. Even kids knew it as a street to pick up prostitutes. And now I will not take the LRT anymore after witnessing smeone shooting up on the train while I was taking my daughter out. City Council has failed and is to far to "Progressive"

My dad used to live just a few blocks away from Commonwealth stadium when he was fresh out of his parents home in Spruce Grove (iykyk, bit of a massive change of pace lol) and he told me lots of stories of feeling very unsafe in his house when his roommates were away. Nothing ever happened to him that he's spoken about but he has mentioned hearing about a lot of crimes that happened nearby when he lived there. Having gone to see Edmonton Elks (formerly Eskimos) games at the stadium, I can say that when the sun is out the area seems pretty relaxed, but walking back to the parking lot or to an Uber after the game it is a totally different feeling. I also used to volunteer as a Cadet at the Boys and Girls club in little Italy there. As a senior cadet one of our duties was quite literally to keep an eye on the door and make sure that nobody suspicious was loitering outside, and there was at least one occasion where a cadet snuck out and was followed before they circled back to ask for help. Scary stuff. I currently live in Ritchie with my parents, which is a really really good neighborhood now but when I was much younger, around 2005-2013 it was a way rougher neighborhood with lots of drug crime and car/car part theft. I woke up to the sound of an angle grinder taking my mother's catalytic converter pretty often when I was younger. Now the Ritchie market and four corners project has basically turned the neighborhood around and should be a standard for other neighborhood revival projects around the city, I'm pretty happy to live where I live even if I really do hate this city. This channel is solid gold, I'm really excited to watch more and learn some stuff about this city I never really knew!

I lived in Edmonton for 14 years and moved out about 10 years ago. I miss it. I lived mainly in Silverberry and it was nice. Had no problems and i explored all the city but then i was mostly working and there was no time to get into trouble. Its a great city.

I've never lived in Edmonton, but I am from the north-west part of Alberta and visit the city frequently. I have definitely noticed an overall degradation of the city, over the past 30 years. While it is still a far nicer city than many others, it also is definitely not as nice as it once was.

I’ve lived like a 10 minute walk from that section of 118 you were filming for a little over a year now, and honestly in the day time it’s extremely nice and welcoming area. Everyone is very friendly and no one will bother you. Also there’s a lot of music, barbecues and other events. Even in the night time they occasionally will close down all of 118 from 97th street too 82nd and there’s bench’s and fire places all over the place in the middle of the road and everyone is just out being social. Somedays are worse than others of course, but most of the time it’s really not that bad over here.

Yeah fair enough, that area of 118 seems to have really improved. I consider 118 from 82 street east to a lot grittier in general. But I honestly love 118 overall, tons of history, character and great places to eat!

A very good video indeed. Edmonton was/is/will always be that old wild west boomtown for better or for worse. It attracts all kinds both good and bad which makes it a dynamic and interesting place to live/be from. Yes it's been a rough few years but is true for every large city right now. You can't scroll throw KZbin of any city without seeing chaos. What it needs is housing, housing and more housing. Half the issues we see are because people have nowhere to go. If you award them that, most other issues will take care of themselves... And of course a huge increase in drug treatment for those who seek it...

Thanks! Lived in Edmonton from birth to age 37, and plan to move back when I retire in 15 years. I’ll keep an eye on how it goes. I hope to use the LRT to walk in the Muttart every day, but maybe Uber / keeping my car will be better.

Great video. Edmonton does have its challenges. We regularly travel to Central and South America during the winter. Many people in Edmonton seem to think it's dangerous down there, but the reality is that Edmonton not any safer than any other place. If you go looking for trouble, you'll find it. I had my truck and tools stolen a year ago. $ 12,000 of stuff that I relied on for making a living, - gone! The police - useless. But I love Edmonton. What can you do?? New subscriber here.

I've lived in Edmonton my whole life, and this is basically accurate. The east downtown core and Clareview are known to be rougher areas. Lower income, higher crime. And specifically 118 Ave and the area north of Commonwealth Stadium are not recommended. I lived right in that little part he circled around Norwood Blvd, and I would describe it as less than ideal. Certainly choose to live elsewhere if possible lol.

I recently moved to Edmonton and have seen some of the neighborhoods. Chinatown is rough, 118 Avenue in NE Edmonton is a bit sketchy. Downtown can be sketchy as well in the northern and eastern blocks. I haven't gone out to Stony Plain Road yet. I agree with your analysis on the northside neighborhoods but on the south side Mill Woods is not the only sketchy neighborhood I hear about. How about Southgate, or some of the areas along Whyte Avenue? In regards to transit I'm not taking my chances with that. I have a vehicle to drive but I once took a bus from the airport to Century Park at around 7 in the evening and it was okay but probably because I was with the airport crowd and they were not sketchy at all. For those that may not know there is currently a predator in the Ritchie/Greater Strathcona area that is following women and in some cases trying to break into their homes. Be careful if you like to walk alone in the Mill Creek Ravine. The predator frequently looks for women in this area.

Over the years I've lived just off Stony Plain Rd, Clareview, and right on Whyte Ave. Clareview is fine. Didn't even have many issues off Stony. 3 years on Whyte we were robbed constantly. I avoid Downtown like the fucking plague. Used to travel through the old Greyhound station downtown a lot when I was young, and just stepping outside for a smoke you had to keep your head on a swivel, lol.

@@BurnTheFlag Interesting, there's definitely a problem with thieves in the Whyte Ave area. There's a shed in my area that has been broken into 3 times over the past year. The property owner actually wrote this on the shed "3 break ins in 1 year, $0 value left." A lot of people shrug this off and say you could be robbed anywhere in the city. It's true but something needs to be done about that. There are certain areas where your chances of being robbed are higher than in other areas. I live a couple of blocks away from Whyte and thankfully I haven't had any issues so far.

Many of the issues with these areas are old run down motels and bars, which I won't name, but if you know Edmonton you have an idea. I have lived in the North East most of my life and have enjoyed pretty much every day of it, quiet in my area, lots to do, and friendly trustworthy neighbors. The issue isn't the people who live nearby, it's the ones who come from outside the area who can be a problem, like in ANY neighborhood, even in St. Albert...where I now live

Strathcona is pretty bad as well. Tons of homeless and drug addicts, petty thefts, car break-ins, and 2 apartment buildings were set on fire in less than a month. One time I walked out of the Circle K on Whyte ave and 106th street and a homeless guy was waiting outside and he asked me if he could sleep over at my house.

Grew up in Oliver and Glenora between 1952 and 1981. Very safe for us in these neighborhoods. One time I was riding my bike, swerving between manhole covers, and the policeman pulled me over for a talk. Little gestures like that made me more conscious of wright and wrong. Looks like those friendly interventions are a thing of the past. Sad to hear how much Edmonton has lost.

I lived in the highlands area 118th and 62nd as well as in the Miller area of clareview. There was some sketchy instances but I never felt unsafe, even walking my daughter to the daycare. Sucks transit went down the tube. It's the thing I missed about living in Alberta. It only took me 30min tops to get to work....maritime it takes an hour there and back 😅

The closure of the greyhound bus line was devastating for Edmonton. Folks come from across Northern Alberta to go to the hospitals, and then have no way to get home. Lived here for all of my 53 years, most of it in North-East Edmonton right on the city edge on 19st. Lived downtown for ~5 years and it was never not interesting.

I find Alberta Ave (118 Ave) to be safer than Whyte Ave or Jasper these days. It still looks rough but during this past summer for example I was on 118ave and it was fine. Also the area around Southgate Mall has had a lot more violent crime since the pandemic. Actually there's been notable violence at WEM, Kingsway, and Southgate in the news lately.

@@strangenorth As someone that lives in Newton (adjacent to Beverly), there is still some sketch here and there but it's really not bad. There's basically nothing in the residential areas and Alberta Ave itself is pretty calm most of the time. Even Coliseum station is a nothingburger most of the time. The old reputation of this place essentially being "the hood" is long over tbh. I actually moved from Inglewood which doesn't have a reputation but should. Constantly had strange people walking through my yard, the garage got broken into three times, and there have been multiple shootings nearby (the pizza hut one, the officers killed, the mass shooting at that bar).

Completely agree about ETS. A few friends of mine work for ETS. One all out quit due to the violence and over all poor management. The way to "help" was hiring security guards, that did nothing. I was called a "puta" by some younger teens about 12 years ago for asking them to please keep the cursing down as there was a Mom with her kids on the train. I was nice about it when I asked, but these young "ladies" (Absolutely NOTHING lady like about the way they were talking!) weren't having it. I actually got a bit worried the way they turned on me. ETS used to be awesome getting people safely across the city so I never bothered getting my licence. Then I got it and a car, but would take the train downtown every day. I rarely drive now as my husband and dog come everywhere, (C0vid hit, dogs got used to us being home all the time and one dog passed away so yeah....) but I still have a car, just in case I have to go somewhere when my husband can't join me. Claireview is "home" to me. Northside girl through and through, who knows people in gangs, but isn't part of any. Moved away for a few years for work and when we came back, it was sad how poorly the city is run. Edmonton could be the awesome city I have lived in for the majority of my life, as soon as they get tough on crime again, reopen Alberta Hospital again (mental health hospital) and get the housing crisis under control. Broke people with a untreated mental illness are dangerous, and usually homeless.

Thank you for the info, I am moving to Edmonton from GTA (Ontario) next week and all though I am excited I know it is important to be aware of any dangerous area's so that I can take better precaution especially for my son's sake. We will not have a car for at least a year if not longer however I am staying at home looking after my baby and my husband is working from home and we will be living walking distance from many convinces/daily errands, so I think we should be ok in avoiding transit as much as possible. What would you suggest as some of the safest areas to live in Edmonton? Would you say that the area's close to Edmonton Mall are mostly safe?

Thanks for watching! Yeah the areas around WEM are pretty normal, you can definitely find some more affordable homes/rentals around there too. The mall has a lot of cool stuff to try as well. I would also recommend the Bonnie Doon area, very centrally located with a lot of parks and access to Mill Creek/river valley - good area for families. Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to comment - you'll probably be ok using transit, I just wanted to talk about some of the problems Edmonton has been having. However, most North American cities are seeing the same thing so these issues are not unique to Edmonton. I would honestly just avoid using transit after dark as much as possible but you'll probably be fine. A lot of personal safety is just about constantly being aware of your surroundings and being smart as you move through the world. Edmonton is a great city though and it has a lot to offer newcomers. I'm a southside guy but i bought my 1sr home on the north side. After I moved in I learned I was the only one who had a job on my street. There was several who were retired but a lot unemployed. One day in the summer I noticed smoke coming over my fence, I looked over and saw my crazy neighbor burning his grass with diesel. Behind my house a Harley gang guy moved in with 2 pit bulls. My 2 young boys wanted to play with the dogs but they were just to mean. My local drug store called me and asked if I had co signed a family allowance check to my neighbors kid as he said he did some work for me. I went to the drug store and he gave me the check. I than went over to my neighbors and told what his son had done. My neigbor whos an idiot says his son is crook and just got out of jail and I should go to the police. I went to the city police who than told me the check was federal so I had to go to the RCMP. So I went to the RCMP and thats where they told me kid was NOT A KID and ha record a mile long. They took the check as evidence and said I might needed in court . I never heard anything from them or did I get any money from that check, Whilw doing my spring clean uo, I noticed ny neighbot had wires rubbing d=from my fence and into his windows as well as nails and screws jetting upwards, I asked my neighbour what rhe hell was he doing and he said it was his alarm sisytem as his kif hd threatened to kill hi. I put my house up for sle and moved back to the southside where just about every one webt to work

Do you have any thoughts on Century Park? Trying to move there but ive had a friend telling me it was dangerous but ive been in the area and it seemed relatively normal and peaceful

It can get sketchy at transit stations, maybe they were referring to the Century Park transit station area. Great area overall though. Cheers mate!

Used to live in a 109 year old house back in 2018, I think it was around 114 st NW Edmonton. Honestly, I never had much in the way of crime in my area when I lived there. Would get groceries in Oliver Square. Later on I moved out and near by WEM. As of 2021 I have lived in Fort Saskatchewan. Which Is a smaller industrial city north of Edmonton.

@@strangenorth as an oil field worker, I spend most of my time up north or going around Canada or the U.S. As for Fort Sask, I live in a pretty good spot. Can't complain!

I am a former Edmontonian I used to live on 118 Ave & 93 Street. At that time it was okay. But now pretty trashy, like you said.

Yeah it has gotten pretty rough in areas, but honestly that street still has a ton of character and cool places to visit.

I lived on the west side of 118th next to the big stupid metal baseball bat for a few years in the early 2000s, on the ground floor no less. There was another incident every week. I watched a guy breaking into cars in my parking lot get smoked by an actual baseball bat when the car owner caught him. This was about 15 feet from my bed. I eventually moved to the west side and it was much more peaceful.
