My father served on the Sara during WWII. He was a Boilermaker in boiler room #10. She was struck by a torpedo in Boiler #9. My father was so sure that she would not sink that he took the time to unscrew the brass plate of #10 before he fought the fire and then went topside. I have that brass plate along with many other things from the Sara. I have his wool uniform and cap.

When I was a kid I was outraged when I learned of the fates of _USS Saratoga_ and _USS Enterprise._ My grandfather, a Marine who served in combat in Korea, explained to me that as soon as they're done using you they forget about you, that is always the way of war. 😢 Thank you (as always) for this excellent video. One again as usual I learned some things.

Tank you for the video. I began reading Pacific war history as a boy in the 1960's. Old Sara is my favorite alltime US carrier along with the USS Yorktown CV-5.

It is very sad to me and actually disgraceful to have doomed such a faithful and honourable ship to that fate. The Navy should know very well that ships have souls.

One last observation. It was a crime to sacrafice both the USS Saratoga and the Battleship Nevada, the only ship during the Pearl Harbor attack to build up steam and make a run to try to get out of Pearl. The final indignaty was when in 1959 the USS Enterprise CV-6 was scrapped. It's a damn shame that it took so long for the US Navy to recognize the that famous WWII ships deserved to be fkoating museums. Every time I go to San Francisco, I visit the WWII submarine Pampanito, and now San Pedro in the LA area has the USS Iowa. Save history!

Great ship ..... it's sad that the USS Saratoga CV-3 and the USS Enterprise CV-6 couldn't be preserved as museum ships because those two ships and their crews stood up to the Imperial Japanese Navy when all hope was lost after Pearl Harbor until the end of the Solomon Islands campaign and still survived the war....on a personal level, Pop fought the last year of WWll as an infantryman in General Patton's 3rd US Army and he once told me that not all war monuments should be built for only the dead but also for those who survived to live another day

The Sara was my grandfather's ship, 43-45. He was on her and wounded at Iwo Jima. He was sad she was sunk at Bikini Atoll, but understood that was a better fate than scrapping.

So the Saratoga flight crews were serving on the Yorktown during Midway that is fascinating would love to see a movie made about something like that. Then did the flight crews who survived head back to the Saratoga? That's pretty cool learning about Saratoga and Victorious one flying bombers the other fighters. My neighbor served aboard the Sara he wasn't at his normal station when one of the kamikaze hit he would have been killed if he was. Part of the fire crew. He was heartbroken they blew up the ship in a nuclear test. Were the crews of Sara and Victorious drinking buddies on shore or did they hate each other like Enterprise? That would make a pretty fun movie in my opinion. Would much rather see a movie about that kind of subject rather than all the superhero BS. Any story about chasing the girls on shore and heading out to sea. Ala "A band of Brothers" type of show but on the Pacific American fleet featuring multiple men storylines on different ships. I enjoyed "the Pacific" show but this could still be done.

Good afternoon, This is the first video that I have viewed that gave a total composition of the importance of the allies cooperation. Yes I acknowledge the importance of the USN, the total importance of the involvement of the “UNITED STATES”. Without the involvement of the US, I don’t see the allies winning the Second World War. At the end of her service, she was sold for scrap. The size of the fleet, with the over abundance of fleet carriers, needed to the recoup the cost of war. Through her many successful battles, none the less she, amongst others needed to be struck from the fleet, and broken down to recover the small amount of money’s that was the cost of freedom. We all had suffered in lives lost, our armies needed the equipment to be successful on the field of battle, and the funds lost across the world do to the rebuilding of devastation caused by WW2. We are still trying too repay the coffers for the conflicts we fought in the last three centuries of fruitless conflicts. It looks like we’re not finished needlessly throwing away our youth and funds, and this time it will cost us our “freedom.” I’m dumbfounded to see that our leaders haven’t learned the cost of freedom yet. Our military coffers are emptied, our arm forces are weakened as I write yet why are we throwing millions to a war that is only for, as far as I can see, laundering money. If you can explain the need for shovelling millions of dollars to the corrupt governments such as Ukraine, as it’s peoples suffer from the wasteful crazy uncheck government spending, please educate me. War is good for absolutely nothing, say it again. Forever in His service

Maybe her bad nicknames & no respect came from her lack of presence in the big battles ? I mean just from your video, her name could have been the USS Refit...LOL And I'm not sure why, but her successor, (CV-60) was the butt of a lot of jokes too. I served on her sister ship, the USS Forrestal.

Just a lot of bad luck you do have a point though often in dry dock with some kind of damage have to wonder about her support ships if she was getting torpedoed so easily her Destroyers not doing their job.
