General I really, really want to thank you for featuring my cousin's video at the beginning of your video. I love my cousin Jennifer and I'm so proud of her for being the first female SWAT officer and to have made it to the most elite SWAT team is amazing in it's self. When I was stationed at 32nd Street Naval station I would go visit my family and talk tactics and shop with Jen everytime I would go up to San Pedro. When I was selected to force protection and VBSS training she was key to my success to making the teams on my ships I served on. Even though the force protection and VBSS teams we're not LAPD SWAT it gave me an idea on how intense SWAT is in Los Angeles. So again from the bottom of my heart thank you for doing this video on the LAPD SWAT and featuring my cousin Jennifer Grasso at the beginning of your video.

Damn near 20 years ago now, when I was in the Army, for whatever reason, we did a series of glasshouse drills at NTC with SWAT teams from the LAPD, San Bernardino County and I think a unit from up north. Why? I don't know, I was just a dumb grunt at the time but it was pretty cool. They were all extremely professional, highly skilled, and easy to get along with. You guys should do the next story on the Philadelphia Stakeout Unit, the actual first Big city tactical team. The unit was created in 1963 in response to a high number of bank robberies, and Darryl Gates modeled his unit after them and Gates was the first to simply come up with the acronym S.W.A.T. which stuck & became popular all over the country. The name of the Stakeout Unit was changed to S.W.A.T. back in 1998 when I entered the unit & proudly served until 2014.

Every time I hear that LAPD created the first SWAT Team in America I have to shake my head. LAPD has the first tactical team to call themselves SWAT in America, but the first police tactical team in America was, remains the NYPD ESU. Created in 1930, some 37 years before LA SWAT was created. ESU never called itself SWAT and still doesn’t, but the work they’ve done for 93 years is the definition of SWAT work. There’s a book written in the 70 called “Some Very Special Men”. It describes the work of the NYPD ESU from the 40s/50s/60s. It describes mistakable SWAT work. Other than that detail, this post was EXCELLENT..

@SOG2402 жыл бұрын
No, Darryl Gates (LAPD) created the acronym SWAT as it originally stood for "Special Weapons Attack Team", but he later changed it to "Special Weapons and Tactics" on the advice of his Deputy Chief, Ed Davis. Philadelphia PD was the first to create a Specialized Unit within the department to deal with the sudden surge of bank robberies in the area. LAPD was the first department to form a Police Tactical Unit. I believe the current incarnation of LAPD SWAT was modeled after the British SAS as well as the German GSG-9 and French GIGN in 1983.

LAPD SWAT and every other team, along with Riot gear was birthed out of the 1965 Watts Rebellion. LAPD, LASD, CHP got whooped and pushed back across Imperial Highway. The brothers who pushed them back were Slausons, Businessmen, Gladiators, D'artagnans, Huns, Farmers etc. Prior to the 65 Watts Rebellion the only gear police were armed with were. Hickory batons/Clubs, Electric Prods (Selma), Helmets and Gas mask. Then when the Panthers came on the scene in October of 1966, and chapters started springing up across the country. LE agencies had to form teams to deal with them. You also had Numerous events that occurred in 1967-68. On December 4th, 1969 in Los Angeles at 41st and Central. Only 7 blocks from LAPD Newton station. LAPD and SWAT had a shootout with the LA Chapter of the BPP. That was their baptism by fire. By time 92 comes along LE noticeably had better gear than 27yrs earlier. Now today you see all of what you see. APC (Bearcats, MRAPs, etc), Arwens, 40mm grenade launchers, Shields, Pepperballs, Triple chasers, etc. Interesting history.

It depends on the individual law enforcement agency. Like most state, county and local departments probably don’t even require a security clearance. Is there any particular agency you’d like to work for? Or place you’d like to live? Cause if you know the agency I can tell you their requirements
@blitzkrieg4593 жыл бұрын
I worked in law enforcement for a few years as a sheriffs deputy, most agencies require you to be a U.S. citizen. To be part of a swat unit, most places also require you to do a few years of patrol before applying, unless you’ve had swat or special operations training, but that would be up to the chief or sheriff to sign off on. Most of the guys I knew in our local swat team are former military, but that’s not required. Some team snipers I knew had no military experience, but received heavy training from state and federal academies.

Now the stuff with clearance, every law enforcement officer using NCIC (national crime information center) will have to get a background check to be certified.
