Omaha is not the capital of Nebraska. And while you are good with the original French and Spanish pronunciations (because, duh, Portuguese) a lot of them have been Anglicized (Manglicized?) by the residents over the years. Moh BEEL, duh BYOOK, and SOO saint ma REE are examples. And you definitely get a pass on NAK uh tish and STEL la cum. Those are unintuitive in ANY Indo European language.

On my part, I'm just wondering why, for example : -In Maine, Castine (founded by the French) is not considered the oldest city there ; -In Mississippi, Ocean Springs aka Old Biloxi aka Fort Maurepas (still by the French) is not considered the oldest city there ; -In Minnesota, Grand Portage or Grand Marais (founded by you guessed who) are neither considered ... From my quick researches, these examples appeared as older permanent continuous settlements than the ones mentionned in your video 🤨

Not a European settlement, but in NM the Acoma Pueblo located nearly 100 km west of Albuquerque is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the US as the Acoma built the Acoma Pueblo around 1144! The Taos Pueblo also in NM was built around 1450! Both New Mexico's current and original capitol buildings in Santa Fe are unique too! Its original capitol building is the Palace of the Governors which was built in 1610 for the then capital of the Spanish province of Santa Fe de Nuevo México. The Palace changed hands as the territory of New Mexico did, seeing the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, the Spanish return from 1693 to 1694, Mexican independence in 1821, and American territorial status in 1848. It remained the New Mexico seat of government until 1901! NM was granted statehood in 1912. The current capitol building was built in the 1960s and is unique in that it's the only circular capitol building and one of the only ones without a dome! New Mexico's capitol was designed to resemble the Zia sun symbol on the NM flag when viewed from above. The Zia sun symbol is sacred to the Zia people. It's painted on ceremonial vases, drawn on the ground around campfires, and used to introduce newborns to the Sun. Four is the sacred number of the Zia and can be found repeated in the four points radiating from the circle. According to Zia belief, the number four is embodied in the four points of the compass, the four seasons, the four periods of each day, the four seasons of life (childhood, youth, middle years, and old age), and the four sacred obligations one must develop (a strong body, a clear mind, a pure spirit, and a devotion to the welfare of others).

Now, depending on who you talk to, both Taos and Sky City are pushing 1000 years old and they have been never been abandoned, conquered or otherwise uninhabited since their founding. The fact that the creator of this video either doesn't consider them valid to be counted as first is just one tiny sign of the racism and ignorance that are still a part of Native people's lives in the 21st century. Who cares what European was the first to see or live in a particular place? You don't see us keeping careful lists of the Native people that were the first to visit London or Paris as the people that "discovered" those places. The arrogance is unbelievable.

Taos wasn't named because this list focuses on documented European settlements. This is the same reason that Nacogdoches, TX and Hilo, HI weren't listed as older towns. I'm from New Mexico and Taos isn't number one because it was founded in 1615, the "Taos Pueblo" is the part that's been inhabited by the red willow people for 1000 years but it got assimilated into Taos when the initial conquistadors colonized the area and the Settlers managed to keep relations amicable enough for them to integrate until 1640 when the encomienda system caused a revolt from the pueblo people so they fled and didn't come back until 1661 when the local governor promised to cut back on some of the more harsher laws the system had emplaced. The Dutch in New Amsterdam allowed Swedes to settle along the Delaware Estuary in a colony called New Sweden due to having financial backing by several Dutch merchants in Europe. My father's paternal ancestor was already residing there as a ship's carpenter that repaired the boats of Dutch privateers and probably some infamous pirates. I guess those merchants expected the Swedes to obtain furs and hides from the natives which didn't happen thanks to the Iroquois conducting their Beaver Wars. The colony couldn't turn a profit so New Amsterdam took it over. Then the English took control of the Dutch colonies and began hanging anyone around the Delaware Estuary that had any connections with the privateers and pirates in front of the English merchant shippers that were worried about being attacked by them. My father's ancestor caught wind of that before it happened so loaded up his family and tools in wagons to head north to live with the Iroquois in New York. He changed his name from Johan Welsun to John Wilson along the way.

A lot of people in the comments are debating Natchez vs. Ocean Springs (Fort Maurepas / "Old Biloxi") in Mississippi. Fort Maurepas is, without question, the first European settlement in modern day Mississippi, built in 1699. But, "oldest" usually means the settlement that's been continually inhabited the longest. In the video, Williamsburg, VA gets credit in 1633 instead of Jamestown in 1607, because Jamestown was abandoned. Going by the same rules, we need to make sure that Ocean Springs has been constantly lived in since 1715 or earlier, to beat Natchez. We know for a fact that "Biloxi" was the capital city of French Louisiana from 1719 to 1722. Sources seem to agree that the capital was moved initially from Mobile to Fort Maurepas ("Old Biloxi"/Ocean Springs) in 1719, then across the bay to "New Biloxi" (modern Biloxi) again in 1719, then to New Orleans in 1722. This feels like strong evidence that OS would have been inhabited from at least ~1715 onwards. Would Bienville have moved the capital from the well-established settlement at Mobile, back to Ocean Springs, if OS hadn't consistently served as an outpost for some time? That seems doubtful, but maybe it would have been done in these very early colonial times. There are a couple of pieces of evidence that OS was uninhabited for a while. For one, most sources agree that the initial Fort Maurepas structure was burned in 1719-20 when the capital was moved across the bay to (New) Biloxi. The cartographic record on Ocean Springs is also mixed. I looked through a bunch of old maps of New France. Here's what they said: digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/510d47da-eebb-a3d9-e040-e00a18064a99 - 1719 map shows "Fort of Biloxi" on the east side of the bay (OS) digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/510d47df-f8df-a3d9-e040-e00a18064a99 - 1732 map shows Fort of Biloxi on the east side of the bay (OS) (inaccurate?) digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/17b7ad00-34f7-0135-27df-6b39353494b5 - 1732 map shows "Old Biloxi" on east side of bay, specifically cites it as first French settlement, but calls it abandoned(!!!) digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/510d47df-fd30-a3d9-e040-e00a18064a99 - 1755 map shows "Old Biloxi" on east side of bay. // As a side note it's interesting that in my research for this tl;dr youtube comment, almost all mainstream sources identified Mobile as the first capital of French Louisiana, beginning 1702. Growing up in Ocean Springs, MS we were usually taught that Ft. Maurepas i.e. "Biloxi" was the first capital of French Louisiana, from 1699-1701. Some sources, specifically about Maurepas, I've found agree with this characterization. Maybe it's a question of whether the first city in a territory is by default a "capital". // Hopefully this gives people some basic background on why this is controversial. Maybe historians with more specific knowledge or ability to access better sources will be able to chime in.

I’m curious how you picked these dates. At various times you called these locations, “continuous settlements”, “towns”, and other things. Defining your terms is important. Fort Bridger, Wyoming, for instance, was settled by Europeans in 1841, and it is still a town today. I’m not sure if that is the oldest settlement in Wyoming, but it is for certain twenty years older than the date you shared for Cheyenne, which was the date of its incorporation, which is different than its settlement. I also strongly disagree with counting settlements from their European start - if Portugal can count its oldest cities back to Roman times and before, Hawaii can count settlements that reach back long before American missionaries arrived! (As can Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico, and more.)

If you said the town name with proper French rules, no one would understand you there. Also, Vincennes has a lot of really cool history. During the Revolutionary War, the British held the fort you mentioned. A group of 100 American soldiers were able to take it even though the British outnumbered them. The whole thing was led by George Rogers Clark, William Clark’s older brother. It’s a national park today.

They put Santa Fe at #2, said it was founded in 1607 and was the “only modern city that can trace its founding to the 16th century…” Yet, they put St. Augustine, Florida at #1 with a date of 1565. One of our commenters questioned Nacogdoches as being the oldest in Texas and cited Presidio, Texas in 1535. Others have thrown in San Antonio, Texas as another alternative. Presidio is about the fifth name that place had. In 1535, it was a small village of the La Junta Indians and wasn’t until 1863 that a mission was built there. It wasn’t until 1760 that a fort was built there, so that may be why Nacogdoches beat it out. It really all depends on what constitutes the “founding” of a city.

Nacogdoches pronounced (na-kuh-doh-chiz), is far older than San Augustine, or any other town on this list. It was first settled in Neolithic times, and has been under continuous settlement since at least the 1100s, if not earlier. The year 1779 is just when Spain claimed it as one of their pueblos.

Sault Ste. Marie was misspelled and mispronounced. It's spelled as I said, Sault Sainte Marie, and it was established as a French trading post and mission. It's pronounced SOO Saint MAHree (the l and t are silent in the first word, second word is just Saint, third word is the American pronunciation of Marie). It also has one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in the US. The reason there are very old communities in the Midwest is the French were there decades before the British or any American travellers or colonists. Michigan still has Native American, French, and British-named towns. There's also 17th century French transliteration of Native words, phrases and names - so it's old French.

Jamestowne, Virginia is 170 years older than Albany, NY, so is Roanoke. Plymouth Mass, is also MUCH older than Albany, and Fort Gibson, Indian Territory was established in 1824. (Ever hear of "The Trail of Tears"???) There are 1825 graves in the U. S. Military cemetery where my Uncle is buried (with "Pillow" headstones). Fort Leavenworth, Kansas Territory was established about 1830. Taos, N.M is Centuries older than Santa Fe. The Hopi had caves there before 1000 AD. The Zuni were in Southern N.M. five hundred years (or more) before that.

10:08 is incorrect. Chester (in neighboring Delaware County; Chester County prior to 1789) is the oldest municipal settlement in Pennsylvania. While Philadelphia was established in 1682, it wasn't officially incorporated (as the first planned city - now known as Center City) until 1701 whereas Chester, original the Swedish village of Uppland (settled in 1641), was incorporated as a borough in 1682, later gaining third-class city status in 1866.

This video is about the oldest cities founded by Europeans. There are continuously inhabited Native American settlements in the US that are much older. For example, the Acoma Pueblo was built between 1100 and 1250 CE.

I always learned St. Mary’s City is older than Annapolis, but you might be right. Also, Jersey isn’t a town in England. It’s one of the Channel Islands and is a bailiwick of Great Britain. Savannah is NOT a small town! It’s a huge suburb and famously beautiful. It’s also home to the Savannah College of Art and Design. Shepherdstown is also famous for Shepherd University. It’s a great school for communications. Also, Hawaii hasn’t been inhabited for nearly that long. Polynesians first arrived in 1200 AD. Hawaii is one of the most isolated places on earth.

Maryland’s oldest city is actually St. Mary’s City, founded in 1634, by Roman Catholics, who were fleeing persecution in England. Maryland was to be a haven for Catholics, but being an English colony, it was made a Protestant colony after the English Civil War and the victory of the Puritans.

Ogden, UT in 1851? It's pretty common knowledge that the Mormon pioneers arrived and established Salt Lake City in 1847. Utah's commemorative parade every year is even called the Days of 47 Parade. Ogden was actually established in 1846 and then purchased by Mormon Pioneers in 47. Ogden was indeed the first UT settlement, but the year shown on your map was 1851. Should have been 1846.
