When you spoke about Saudi arabia i expected you to speak about the origin of the word "arab" because almost everyone know that the word "Saudi" is the name of the royal family.... Also, you should apologize about forgetting Bahrain, about saying that ajam is a Persian word while it is an arabic word, and also Kut is an arabic word not hindustani one 😒😒😒 Also, if any arabic subscriber recognize that you intended to make Israel's part at the minute 19:48 in reference to the masecares that happened at the year 1948 you will lose them

Because Bahrain was excluded, I will include it in the comment section. Bahrain is an Arabic word meaning "Two Seas", and is thought to either refer to the fact that the islands contain two sources of water, sweet water springs and salty water in the surrounding seas, or to the south and north waters of the Persian Gulf, separating it from the Arabian coast and Iran, respectively. 17:42: It's worth noting that _Georgia_ is country's exonym (external name) the Western world adopted and later became its international name. The endonym (native name) is _Sakartvelo (საქართველო)_ which literally means _the land of the Kartvels, the place of the Kartvels,_ or simply _of the Kartvels._ Kartvels (ქართველები) are the native ethnic group of Georgia. The word _Kartvel_ comes from the core region of Georgia called _Kartli_ which gets its name from the medieval kingdom of the same name - Kingdom of Kartli - the most direct predecessor of Kingdom of Georgia (also referred as _Georgian Empire_ in some sources); although the ancient polity (and later a kingdom) of Colchis also played a major role in its formation as both kingdoms spoke related languages (known as Kartvelian languages), and shared lots of cultural heritage. The Kingdom of Kartli was called _Iberia_ in the Greco-Roman geography while Colchis is a Greco-Roman name itself that was later adopted by Georgian historians too; the ancient native name of Colchis was _Egrisi,_ and its origins are unknown. As for the origin of the name _Kartli,_ it't highly debated, but the most widely-accepted hypothesis is that it came from the Iranian word _"kart",_ meaning _"a land that is surrounded",_ referring to the mountainous nature of the region that served as a natural fortification which made the region hard to invade. P.S.: I'm Georgian but the sources I've read are all in English, so feel free to do your own research.

You forgot East Timor! The named drived from the word Timor which is the name of the island it sits on, when translated, Timor means east, so calling east Timor actually calling it "East of the East" the name of the island itself is referred from the location which is the most Eastern island on the greater Sunda Archipelago. When still under Indonesian colonization, the area was a part of Timor Timur Province, before seceding from Indonesia in 2002. Other name of the country is "Timor Larosae" on which "Larosae" means "Rising Sun" on regional language.
@danielch6662

Timor is the island, because it is in the east. East Timor (Timor-Leste) is because the country is only on the eastern half of the island. West Timor is part of Indonesia. West Timor (Timor Barat) was also previously known as Indonesian Timor and Dutch Timor. East Timor was Portuguese Timor. No prize for guessing how that division happened. 😊

When pronouncing Sanskrit words, you don’t need to pronounce the last letter “a”. That is there just so you extend the pronunciation of last sound before the “a”. For example, “CĪNA” or चीन is pronounced “CHEEN” with extended intonation at “N” and skipping the letter “A” altogether. This is true for all Sanskrit words written in English/Latin alphabet. Another word was “DEŚA” or देश which is pronounced like “THEY-SH”.

@3:28 Although the names may sound alike, Republic of China is a very different government than the People's Republic of China. The island of Taiwan, formerly known as Formosa, had been ceded to Japan by the Qing Dynasty in the 1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki. Then in 1945 after Japan surrendered at the end of World War II, the island of Taiwan became under the jurisdiction of the Republic of China. The RoC was a party established in 1912 who overthrew the Qing Dynasty of China. They also fought in conflicts with Russia and the Second Sino-Japanese War. In 1949 after civil war with the communist party of China, The RoC government relocated to Taiwan along with ~1.2 million people from China to Taiwan.

China and Korea's name are understandable and are named after one of their dynasties, foreigners actually made an effort to call them the way they want to be called since the name China might have derived from the Qing and Qin dynasties, while Korea's was the name of their first unified Kingdom (Goryeo) and arguably their most powerful ancient kingdom during the era of the 3 kingdoms (Goguryeo), the problem is, foreigners don't know when this kingdoms they used to know change their name since communication between countries used to be hectic as fuck and takes 2+ years, this is like when Goryeo changed its name to Joseon etc, so the foreigners stick with the names they already know when refering to the place in a map, so the name eventually stuck, as for Japan a more likely origin of the name is that Nippon was mispronounced by people, since Japan and Nippon sound very similar.

Actually as far as I know.. Bangladesh gets its name from two words- "Bangla" denoting the language spoken in the country and "Desh" meaning country (in Bangla language).. So in short Bangladesh means "Country of the Bangla speaking people".. Interesting points: 1.Earlier it was a part of Bengal sultante (or subah), then British India and then East Pakistan before gaining independence as a separate nation. 2. It was basically a part of undivided Bengal till partition after which it, majorly being inhabited by Bengali Muslims, decided to join Pakistan before gaining independence as separate nation. 3. The other half of Bengal (West Bengal), being inhabited mostly by Bengali Hindus, is still an important and integral part of India.

You forgot the name Temasek for Singapore. Singapore was known as Pulau Ujong (Malay ver of Pu Luo Zhong) then Temasek then change to Singapura when Sang Nila Utama came founding the kingdom of Singapura. It was later change to Singapore after WW2 when it was called syonanto
@0900370pian
@0900370pian 11 күн бұрын
Another plausible version was that Temasek used to be a port where trading ships came to stop by particularly ships from Tamil Nadu, India. During some point certain Temasek people mistreated these sailors and these sailors from Tamil Nadu became angry. They decided to no longer stop by Temasek and went to other islands/places nearby to trade. Thus whenever these ships passed Temasek, the Temasek people will shout at these ships in Malay Singgah oi! Singgah! Mari Singgah! (Singgah means stop by). The sailors just replied in Tamil Podah!! Podah!! Cit Podah!! (Podah means go away in Tamil). This quirky situation turns into shouting match between Singgah and Podah. The Srvijayan prince saw this situation happens so many times so much so that he renamed the island Singgah Podah. After a long time has passed by Singgah Podah became Singapura which is the corrupted version of the original Singgah Podah. This I believe the true origin of the name Singapore.

You are absolutely correct regarding India. Originally it is called as Bhārat, and recognised by the constitution. Before there is any country that was even identified, India was called as "Bharata varsha" after the king Bharata, who conquered all six parts of the world and fought with his brother to conquer the last remaining city of the world. In ancient times, it was called as "Jambu dweepa". The term "India" is put by the British which has no meaning or even not identified in sastras.

And named by Arabs in the war of the chains, when Arabs conquest the Sassanid Empire. Grane: there is a argument about that name as some agreed it meant a small hill, while others agrees that it mean a small horn, as Kuwait City took a shape of horn. Kout: it meant a fort above the sea, it’s an Indian word. As many Indian coastal cities was named with Kout such as Calcutta.

Very nice video, but made a huge mistake on the China part. As you pointed out, the "China" is evolved from the ancient Latin word"Chin", "Cina" or "Sina" which has been recorded since the 2th century. It is generally acknowledged that this pronunciation is reffing to the Qin(秦) dynasty, one of the most powerful empire in Chinese history around BC 200, Yet the picture you used in this video is in fact the Qing(清) dynasty, a regime did not occur until the 17th century. There is nearly a 2000-year-gap.😂 Conclusion: It seems that you mistook Qing(清) for Qin(秦), and this is understandble as it is very similar in pronunciation for foreigners. However, for Chinese, they are very different. First, the handwriting (character) is very different. Moreover, the Qin is usually deemed as the first centralized regime and most powerful dynasty in Chinese history, while the Qing as the last feudal dynasty was notorious for their rotten governance. They are totally different or I would say exactly opposite for Chinese.😂

In Southern Chinese dialects, Japan has been called: Yapon. When the Europeans first came to China, initially the Portuguese and Spaniards, they arrived in the South and adopted the pronunciation. Obviously, in many Romance languages, "J" has been pronounced as "Y". So, they spelled Yapon as Japon/Japan. Then, the British came and mixed up the pronunciation, mistakenly converting the Y-sounded J to dz-sounded J, just like "Yesus" to "Jesus", "Yerusalem" to "Jerusalem". So, after the British became the strongest colonial power, the dz-sounded J stayed and Yapon had since then been pronounced as Japan (with the dz-sounded "J").

Okay so as an Arab I have to point out the following: Some of the names you mentioned have perfectly understandable Arabi meanings without having to look for origins. Like Qatar for example You thought it was those old mapping guys and the names evolved from there, but it's definitely the opposite. They knew them by those names because that's what the Arabs already called them. And the distortion of course comes because they're translating the names to their tongue. This btw confirms the idea I had from the start of the video that in a lot of cases (not all) you find the original western name and work from their, which is misleading to say the least.

That is a good point and an important correction. In GK's defence I think he is tracking the origin of the modern international name (let's face it, that means current English language name, basically). @@tonynunes4965 it's important to note that Names are different in languages, each language uses a name for a specific country and that name drives from different place, here we are using English so we are talking about the names of these nations in english, like Germany, in English it's called germany but in Arabic it's called "Almania" both names come from different places, Soo Qatar in English comes from different place than Arabic, And each language gets the name from different place. Another name was Temasek which is in Melayu and Chinese explorers called us Danmaxi. The word Singapore was to commercialize the island internationally. Malaysia was known as Malaya before the merger with Singapura. During the merger it was change to Malaysia as the letters 'S' and 'I' refers to Singapura. Then the separation happened. The Srivijayan prince saw this situation happens so many times so much so that he renamed the island Singgah Podah. After a long time has passed by Singgah Podah became Singapura which is the corrupted version of the original Singgah Podah. This I believe the true origin of the name Singapore.
