As a Marine Infantryman, I can attest that this show is one of the most accurate portrayals of modern warfare. I wasnt in Iraq, I was in afghanistan, but I always recommend this show to people if they want to know what it was like. 90% boredom, 9% working parties, and 1% actual shit... This also shows the incompetence of the military in general. I find it amazing that we are one of the most effective military forces yet we lack the most basic of logic in the upper chains. One time in afghanistan, my company was operating out a small remote patrol base; we had to have supplies (water, foood, ammo, etc.) delivered to us by helicopter. The area around the patrol base was full of afghans harrassing our helicopters so we went about 2 weeks without a resupply; we were dangerously low on water and specifically requested that on the next drop. The fucktards in the back accidentally brought us gasoline instead of water; they filled the jugs with the wrong thing. We went another week sucking on condensation before they brought us water. The crass humor of this show is what makes it feel extremely spot on. The marine humor was dark, offensive, racists, etc. but never did it seem genuine. I'm not "white" and I had derogatory shit leveled at me but I just gave it back; at the end of the day we were all brothers. You got a bunch of "alpha" guys together with minimal oversight and shit was bound to go sideways. Now that im older and look back at it, I realize it was all just a coping mechanism.
@blazeoftherazgrizsquadron93063 жыл бұрын
That bit about "the marines not liking each other" it's not necessarily them "not liking" or "getting along with" each other. What you gotta understand is that the Marine Corps infantry ( and this goes for all military branches, or any military for that matter) is a fraternity. Brotherhood to its core. Sure most servicemen have venom in their voice towards each other, and in my opinion is how it needs to be. Harnessing their aggression is key to survival and success. The key is making sure that aggressiveness doesn't boil over and screw up unit cohesion. Because when it comes down to it, when the shit hits the fan, the only thing that they can really rely on is the man next to them. Those men are closer to you than your own family. Forget about the whole "spreading freedom", "politics" or if you do believe the memes, the "oil". In a position of authority and leadership in the military, your SOLE OBJECTIVE, is making sure that the men you lead get to come home to their families and friends.

I haven’t watched your reaction yet, but as someone who considers myself to be on the “right” of things, I just want to say I found your intro to be extremely refreshing!! We clearly view things very differently but from what you said it seems like when it comes down to it, I think it’s fair to say we’d probably agree on much more than we’d expect, value/principle-wise. One thing I do want to express regarding your comments on viewing the past through “rose tint”…..totally understand where you’re coming from on this but feel you may be misinterpreting the view of others just a little…here are my personal feelings…the point is not that the world was better back then, it’s that the world is SO MUCH BETTER today BECAUSE of the past and the people who sacrificed so much for the good of mankind. The point to me is that those sacrifices should never fade away in our minds. History repeats itself and we should never make the mistake of thinking tyranny cannot make another run at taking over the world…the world we live in today is a fairy tale compared to what our ancestors had and we have them to thank for it…the fact of the matter is, most human beings in the world today still don’t have 1% of the luxuries we have in the west and the idea of freedom/prosperity is something they will never have the joy of grasping. This in itself should be proof that the sunshine and rainbows existence we are so fortunate to have is not because “the world is better nowadays” but because of the people who sacrificed over history to make it that way for us. We should never stop honoring those who served or continue to serve. Whether you agree or disagree with the politics of war, the men who serve today are in no way less than the men who served in the past, and make no mistake…they are the ones who preserve our freedoms and safety from the cruelty and horrors of the majority of the world. Without them, we really don’t stand a chance at peace. Again, these are just my personal opinions.

RE 13.30 Marines are generally underequiped because they are part of the Navy. The implication is that if it doesn't involve ships, it's probably not in the budget. There is some truth in that. Very recently, the US Marines disbanded all their tank battalions because of "restructuring".

Ms.J, I applaud your open mind. Not all of us over 45 judge people on appearance , race, politics.etc. we deal with humanity on a one on one basis. Soldiers are no different than any of us. I am haunted by decisions made in my youth. Rejected by my country, I chose freelance work . I can tell you that unless you have been in a firefight. Or a situation where many lives depend on one person interpretation of the intelligence, ability to make a split second decision based on facts at hand ,you cannot wrap your mind around the chaos. Hollywood war movies are a lie. In a combat or recon mission that becomes hot. It is so loud you cannot hear. The cordite ,smoke burns your lungs. Ideals , politics mean nothing. It is your training that you rely on. Never. In my decade of liason / recon with many global players, many murky areas of the world politically did it go as planned. Unlike the movies, if A round goes off twenty yards from you, the concussion,shock wave will kill you even if shrapnel is minimal. Dying can take hours, days. You have a order. You carry it out. You live on if you are lucky. Even if it was the right decision at the time. It never ceases. You see the faces. To take another person life no matter if it's you or him stays with you. It plays like a projector you cannot turn off. There is no glory in conflict. You feel weird for being alive.

The one yelling about the mustache not being proper length is due to requirements meant to protect soldiers and marines. Generation Kill can be quite an inaccessible show to fully appreciate for people who have not experienced military life especially at the grunt level. For those that have, the heart of this series's appeal perhaps lies in being one of the most accurate portrayals of grunt life and culture of the modern military ever on television (the level of crass shit-talking, boredom, leadership screw ups, commander politics, personal detachment, and just so many subtle details to list). No overt-heroism, drama or back-to-back high octane fighting. Just a bunch of tired and bored people going about an invasion half the time not knowing what is happening or what they're supposed to do for a cause they don't really care about. I think you're appreciating it very well though especially on picking up inter-character humour and irony!

The mustaches are like that for "Mission Oriented Protective Posture", or MOPP, purposes. If you wanted to keep your facial hair you had to cut the mustaches short like that in order for your gas mask and other chemical equipment to function properly, as facial hair can create gaps in the seal between your mask and your skin. Their company had a mustache growing competition going at the time in the background, which is why you'll see more than one Marine with a mustache like that.

You need to understand something about Marines. They say things to each other for shock effect they don't really mean. Make no mistake... They would die for each other.

Generation Kill is more of a “slice of life” kind of a show. It is a weirdly accurate portrayal of what daily military life is like. Mabye less on the racism though.
@joshmcdonald55204 жыл бұрын
*wobbly hand* In my experience, the racism was less genuine and more trollish and for shock value. If you listened in on my Platoon, you would think we were about to have a race war, but in reality we would kill and die for each other. Aside from the officer bashing, it is SCARILY accurate...
@daletaylor55894 жыл бұрын
Its not politics Juliette. Combat arms are brothers. Everything is picked on absolutely nothing is held back but nothing is held personal. Not only would you die for each other.....you would kill for them. The more you watch the more you will realize this.

Juliete, I must say that I really love your reactions and takes. Lots of reaction channels out there but yours stands out. And don't sorry, this is very much not a "Ra-Ra America!" type of show. Made by the people who made The Wire, arguably the greatest show ever made.

Hi there! So, Welcome to the Functional Dysfunction that is the US Military. As a GWOT Veteran who served in the invasion era, there are some things I feel you should be aware of: 1. The military is a brotherhood. The Sh*t talk and racism you are hearing is just bickering among brothers, and racing to see sho can go closer to the edge. When the chips are down, we will kill for those beside us. We get to pick on each other, and God help any outsider foolish enough to pick on one of us. 2. Yes, that is the BBC you think it is, and it was the only way to get information from the outside world at the time. 3. The military is very homoerotic. When you go through Basic Training - Bootcamp, you have to shower communally with like, 50 other guys. No one comes out of that experience 100% straight. No one has boundaries or personal space after that. 4. I am linking a Recruiting commercial here. Whenever you hear "Slay that Dragon..." and when you hear a conversation about "Dress Blues and a Sword..." This is the Commercial they are talking about. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6HPdqdjbK2BiJo Thank you for sharing these vids, I just found your channel, and I look forward to watching you experience this!

Hey Juilliette, there is another mini series called 'Generation War' which is called the German Band of Brothers. People easily confuse it with this series because of the name but nevertheless you should still check it out.

Strangely I am part of the demographic you are addressing at the beginning of episode 1 gen kill and more strangely I generally agree with you about the dubious aspects of Iraq invasion of 2003; BUT about people seeking out violence when unneeded or being overly patriotic, that might have been the case of a large portion of civilians after 9/11; Where I would like to add some context is that a large amount of young men who joined the military at that time were not necessarily flag waving righties. A large amount of them are just kids who had no better plans, maybe failed out of college or wrecked a car or just didn’t know how to find a career that would take them with no experience and give them a skill. I think if you pay attention to a large amount of subtext in this series you will find that it mirrors that idea. I am glad to see people going back and experiencing docudramas like this, band of brothers and so on as I do think these series do a great job of bridging the gap between history and entertainment. As history can be dry but is absolutely essential to not repeating the past.

As extreme as it seems, this is actually how Marines are. Nothing is sacred. Ever. It's not something that I can ever express properly, but, it helps to cope with the sheer insanity of the situation you're in.
@ExUSSailor4 жыл бұрын
This show did a really good job of leaving the politics out of it, and, just telling the story of the men, and, what they went through. For my part, I didn't agree with the invasion, but, in the military, they don't ask you if you want to go, they tell you to go.

It's history, some of us were involved some of us watched from far away. We need to agree to disagree without name calling, labeling. A civil conversation or debate in todays world is way overdue.

This show is wonderful. I'm so interested in hearing your perspective, because as you said you're a total opposite person from the Marines in the show (although since you said you're bisexual, I will say that infantry Marines are pretty damn gay, let's be honest 😅. Ok first I am a us Marine vet. And I have a few British friends, but it always kills me how some British people roll their eyes when they talk about America at war with some country yet they at one point had colonies on every continent but Antartica. And they got those colonies by killing the local peoples that lived there. None of our countries are perfect. And all politicians are idiots. So please Britian give us our turn to go through our growing pains y'all have been around alot longer. And our people are very similar. Also no matter what if you need us we will be there flaws and all. This show is very one of the best shows I've seen on combat and how crazy and stupid and boring and insane and frustrating war can be. Remember no one wants peace more then the people on the front lines. Likes your reaction btw.
