The federal government paid slaveowners an average of about $300 (equivalent to $9,000 in 2022) for each of their slaves after slavery was prohibited by law. Ex-Presidents and people in Congress owned slaves.

Capitalism will always have ups and downs, and obviously some will lose out that miss their opportunities. But it is a system that allows for new starts and perseverance pays off. It is a real shame that today's left stifles speech ( and I mean non hate) . And ridicules rather than debate. Diversity is as diversity does. A diverse racial ,ethnic, and religious make up without the free arena of diversity in opinion and ideas is NOT ACTUALLY DIVERSE. It's a colorful array of jellie beans but all colors taste the same . Try listening to other points of view. I cannot stand white right wingers , but black conservatives I find fascinating John McWhorter is not a republican but is considered " conservative" in today's pure dogma climate. But his words and ideas are closer to Malcolm X's than any Liberal pundit.

Eminent domain has effected any number of Americans over the course of this country but most of the people who are seeking reparations aren't in a position where their primary issue was that. @@SnowsStorm1Well there’s the old “ you’re taking it out of my pocket argument. “ The fact is that African American pay taxes as well probably doesn’t resonate. But more succinctly, it is the government’s responsibility to make whole the party wronged and legally and morally as a society there is a history of it doing so. The very notion that reparations harms the individual is ridiculous since it is an systemic governmental wrong. On a smaller scale one could also ask why should I pay when an police officer abuses his or her power? But you don’t because it is politically unpopular. I know that many find it hard to identify with the idea of economic governmental accountability but were the shoe on the other foot.. American slavery was the biggest handout of all time. Sanctioned by states and the federal government. Plus, all of the atrocities that occurred afterwards ultimately resulting in the gaining of unknown trillions to one group and small gestures to the other.. Yes, the real word is equity.. Is that better than reparations?

@@dc5024 I'm not sure what you are getting at here but ok let's go with that for a second. With the so called racial wealth gap said to be 150,000 then 5% is 7500. I don't imagine that anyone would be happy with a reparation payment of $7500. In fact that's one of the many issues I have with the concept, because realistically there is no amount of money that could adequate someone who endured slavery but we are now going to force those who never inflicted that harm on anyone in order to compensate their descendants well after the fact. I guarantee you that any amount given will be seen as woefully unfair by those who might be forced to pay it and will feel woefully insulting to anyone that receives it.

I'm sure many people don't know this, but reparations were paid shortly after the Emancipation Proclamation. But not to emancipated slaves. They were paid to slaveowners by the federal government for the taking of property without due process of law under the 5th Amendment. Once you know accurate history, things aren't that complicated. I'd say a good starting place would be the value placed on a slave in 1863, plus 9% interest per annum, compounded daily. Plenty of other categories of damages could certainly be added. But using that as a method of calculating the lodestar threshold seems very reasonable. After all, it was deemed reasonable then, and the slaveowners have had the benefit of that money for 160 years. Another idea is to do a corresponding genealogy on the former slaveowners and compare their present financial picture. And although the State would be paying reparations to the descendants of slaves regardless of the financial situation of the descendants ofnthe slaveowners, the State could pursue the slaveowners' descendants for contribution.

The primary goal of reconstruction of the south after the civil war was to bring the southern states back into the union and to re-unify the country. Had that not happened, we would not be where we are today. The south was decimated during the war. Southern plantation owners lost everything. A slave was a significant investment, $10k per. Reparations to southern plantation owners facilitated the south’s reunification with the north. In short, those individuals lost land an property during the war. They were given partial compensation as the economic structure of the south had been destroyed. That is what reparations are for, to restore what had been taken or destroyed.

@@ninadaly7639 how did I know that your baited question was going to actually be some inept canned, white supremacist explanation? Answer: because your comment already revealed that you know it all. Your explanation is pure garbage. The South could have been brought back into the Union without compensating former slave owners for the value of freed slaves. More importantly, nothing you've offered provides an explanation for not having paid reparations to freed slaves themselves, or for not doing so to their descendants today. Stop baiting and trolling like you know everything. This would be a good time to put away the false historical narrative which you were taught (and which you continue to perpetuate), and to actually engage in critical thinking. Pure crap. A guy named Russell developed the unincorporated tract in 1908. By WWII there were 200 families living on the tract, with no paved roads, no water supply except from wells, and no sewer system. Most of the structures were tar paper shacks. Alameda County, at the expense of the taxpayers, condemned the tract in 1963 and paid the lot owners the appraised FMV of the lots. After the lots became the property of the County arsonists began torching the abandoned buildings. The lady's memory blurs the reality with wishful thinking. The place was a dump, an eyesore, a health and fire hazard. And race had nothing to do with it: 50% of the owners were Mexican, 40% Black, and 10% white. It's called slum clearance, folks.

Slavery is mentioned in the Bible. God instructed The chosen Hebrew people in Leviticus on the conditions of Slavery. Read Leviticus 25: 35-55. God also answered the question of reparations within the pages of the Bible. Just as they left captivity from the first Egypt the second time they will receive double. The Bible states the oppressor would not see himself as guilty. But the Bible promises the remnant would be saved. And those who were captives would make captives of their oppressors.

Someone needs to explain to "white" Americans that reparations is not their debt to pay, no one is blaming them directly for slavery. Jim crow etc.. . It's the Federal and State governments who sanctioned the policies that allowed these thing to happen to African Americans that owe the debt. And arguments about "my tax money" are without merit. African Americans pay taxes as well. And there are numerous payouts and support provided to other groups of people as well as foreign nations that are far less valid than reparations to African Americans

People act like slavery was the ultimate evil, that it was horrible and of course it was. But this whole reparation thing feels like a distraction, its like they want to make us aware that life is not fair. 99% of all humans in history know life is not fair, black, white, Asian, Indian and all the rest. We ALL know life is not fair. There are people living in Africa who have to walk two miles every day just to have some muddy drinking water then on the other side of the world an artist in North Korea gets his leg broken because his art didn't glorify the state, these things didn't happen 150 years ago but today. People in America need to stop complaining like we have it so bad, every American, black, white, Asian and the rest. Every American needs to appreciate what we do have instead of complaining that we don't have enough. We have clean water, cars, internet, job opportunities, food on every corner, the list goes on. I live in California, I'm an older white guy. I have no problem with paying more taxes in order for these people to be paid reparations. We can't fix the current systemic racism until we've fixed our earlier mistakes. Search the records and afford reparations to everyone who had their homes and land stolen regardless of ethnicity. When wrongs are done, they should be acknowledged and then corrected for everyone. We can't grow as a species unless we can recognize and fix our mistakes, as well as to just care for each other.

It's not about ethnicity. You might not be smart enough to understand lineage as it pertains to specific groups of people being systematically harmed. If you're an "older white guy" you are being disingenuous in bad faith. You people hate blacks so bad you cannot acknowledge specific harms against them. Then sidestep accountability by all lives matter nonsense. An "older white guy" would know this if he were being honest.

"Generational Wealth" is an interesting term. Most Inherited Wealth is completely gone by the 3rd generation. I grew up in the 50's and 60's and I saw terrible things happen to Minorities of Color. I remember the lunch counters and the "Colored Bathrooms". I remember the voting rights marches. Yep, and then there was Rosa Parks and the bus. I'm 70 years old and I've seen the struggles. I'm white and I come from a privileged home with "Generational Wealth". I was blessed to have a Paranoid Schizophrenic Mother and an Often Absent Alcoholic Father. We grew up in Abject Poverty and parental neglect and violence. My Generational Wealth consisted of a paper grocery sack that I put 2 changes of clothes in when I left home at age 18. My Mother promised me that the Devil God Satan ran the Community College and that she'd see me starve to death in a Cold Dark Alley with an Aching Hungry Belly before I was going to become a Disciple of the Devil. I've worked 60-80 hours a week average for 50 years from the age of 15 to 65. I served 4 years in the Military during the Vietnam War Era followed by Community College with a little help from the GI Bill. I've never returned home even to visit. I now have 6 years of College and 2 Degrees. I'm Honorably Discharged from the Military after a single 4 year hitch. My house is completely paid off after 32 years of making payments. I have a Comfortable Financial Portfolio after working 60-80 hours a week for 50 years. No Kids, No pool, No pets. I've had 3 entirety unrelated careers besides my 4 years in the Military. I really hate to see people view Generational Wealth as an Entitlement or even as something that was taken from them. Life is the hardest and toughest thing that will ever happen to any of us. Life is about continuing to get up no matter how many times you get kicked in the head. When I hear talk of stolen Generational Wealth I have to feel kind of sad for those involved. Anyone who has to, needs to or wants to depend on other's for their well-being is a lost sole. Generational Wealth, is having access to that paper grocery sack.

How does making someone who had nothing to do with this discrimination, who is struggling to make it pay check to pay check, how should they be paying for this? And what about the Japanese who lost everything in WW2 and were put in internment camps? What about the Mexicans whose land we stole and are all living on today? What about the Catholics that were discriminated against? Or the Italians? I agree with the senator that the best path forward is education and resources. The saddest part of all is that what is being described is a consistent story of the human condition. A little bit of genealogical research and a good bit of Biblical history reveals that no matter what country, government, ethnicity, community, tribe, etc etc etc - mans inhumanity to his fellow man, and the greed that goes with it, knows no bounds. Human governments will never be able to repair nor repay what is owed, hence the sacrifice of the Christ. And the only solution - his Kingdom - on earth - as it is in heaven. Those who make the effort to learn that the Kingdom is already ruling, live for it now, will survive to see true reparations. Psalm 37

We are owed for 500 yrs of systematic oppression. We did most of the work that was financially beneficial in many of these countries. The entire economies were built on our labor. We were never compensated or given credit for our contribution instead villainized. Millions go to this, billions go to those, and to my fellow Black Americans 😘 trillions are owed.

Slaves did not build the US economy. The economical impact of slavery on the south was mainly in cotton and farming. The economy in the north (no slavery) was industrious and superior and was the reason the Union won the civil war. The economy of the south was already starting to crumble before the civil war. The industrial revolution (after slavery) built the United States into what it is now. So if you're going to make an argument, at least make one that is historically accurate. The statement that slavery built the United States is incorrect and greatly exaggerated.

If by chance you happen to be the descendant of a former enslaver. Than your past settler relatives probably received reparations or land after slavery. What alot of people don't realize is that. Reparations was paid out to former enslavers or there living descendants. The 40 acres and mule that was documented and promised to formally enslaved people wasn't honored shouldn't just be forgotten about because generations have past.
