I have an idea for an extended version: Instead of Jake proving what a twerp Ryland is, Ryland and Lucy agree to send Jake to live with Ryland's sister Clarissa, who turns out to be a better mother than Lucy, then when Ryland DOES do something bad to Lucy, she tries to reunite with Jake but by then it'll be too late and he will want nothing to do with her anymore, calling Lucy by her first name and Clarissa "Mom" instead of Lucy for good measure.
