The composition of this strike group made perfect sense. A squadron of x-wings to deal with any fighters and 2 capitol ship busting B-wings to take out the frigate. A group like this could deal with 90% of any threats they'd face. Now that the empire is gone the chances of facing something as big as a star destroyer is remote.

Well as someone who served in the military it makes sense to have the B-Wing...you have a whole lot of firepower packed into a fighter sized ship and the ability to kill anything from a Corvette to a Star Destroyer without yourself having to have a capital ship. Basically it serves a role similar to the WW2 PT Boats which punched far above their weight class...

I would bet she is fairly well connected. A collector like her, probably sells a few very rare pieces of her collection every once in a while to maintain her lifestyle. Selling those pieces, she probably has connections to high end art dealers, or senators themselves.

One reason that the New Republic probably took the pirate attack on At Attin more seriously than the attack on Navarro was it's location. Navarro was in the outer rim, which has gotten the short stick from both the Old Republic and the Empire. Thus it's not surprising that the New Republic would be reluctant to waste resources on that world. At Attin, which is close to Alderaan, is located in the Core. Since the New Republic wouldn't appreciate pirate attacks, or a possible pirate base, near their most important worlds, they got involved.

Your comments toward the end about cost effectiveness is spot-on. I follow the war in Ukraine regularly, and there's this YT guy from Estonia who occasionally talks about how Estonia is arming up to defend against Russia...and they're basically using the B-wing "anti-capital ship" tactic. Instead of having tanks (the "capital ship" of the battlefield), they're stocking up on hundreds and thousands of Javelins, drones, HIMARS, self-propelled artillery, etc...b/c you can buy at least 100 Javelins for the price of a tank.

Also, javelins don't require the same maintenance 'tail' that a tank does. You'd be looking at 30 or so skilled tradesmen to keep a tank squadron (12-14 tanks) operational, in addition to the minor repairs and maintenance the crew would be expected to perform. And then there's the supply tail, with a fuel truck, ammo truck, water truck (not just for drinking, and you don't want to risk dirty water in your coolant unless you're out of options) and a couple more with other supplies. IIRC the running cost for a single M1 Abrams is north of $250,000 a year, and that's when the riskiest thing you do is training.

Tanks are also relatively more of an "offensive" weapon. While they can be used in the defense, they are relatively more critical for offensive operations.

I remember reading about a tanker who claimed he switched his specialty to anti-tank when he realized that any barely trained yahoo with a $100 rocket launcher could take out his million dollar tank with ease. Heck, I learned how to use a LAW in ROTC. Details may be off, but I always remember led the basic idea.

Composite Laser B-Wing is a helluva lot more cost effective to keep on hand for emergencies than actual Capital Ships. 1 Crew, hyperdrive, etc. I love it.

Even with a base and maintenance crew you're looking at like 20 people for a pair of B-Wings that can take down anything short of a serious military incursion. Take into account the size of a sector, extra crews and ships for down time, rotations, sleep, etc and you are still looking at less than the crew of a single Star Destroyer.

Anybody else think their quick response to At Attin is connected to what happened to Nevarro? Imagine if words spread that a pirate corsair bombarded a peaceful and unprotected village and the NR denied help. The Galaxy was so disgusted that the senate had to immediately revise their policies. Then we get a NR that quickly came to aid when At Attin was needing. Keep in mind there was no way they could really know if that was really THE At Attin from the stories.

Did you also watch some of the politics in those episodes? Especially with the doctor. Coruscant never really cared for the outer worlds. And neither do other core worlds. And their response is Solley due to the importance of At Attin. Notice how there is no Republic presence on the other world that they visited. Which seemed to be bogged into a civil war. Clearly the legend and legacy of these worlds do not matter. But having a vault full of credits does.

@dgray3771 how could they know that was really At Attin? How could the Owl prove it? They only got an alert of pirates they were already hunting down and went straight for it. Truth is, we don't know a lot of things, like what region At Attin is. Maybe they could be in a place, even in the Outer rim, where the NR has better presence and can more easily help. Or maybe they really revised their policies. Remember Lanupa? They were a neutral world, the NR had no obligation to defend then, but they did, independent if they had money or not. They couldn't know if At Attin had money. The NR doesn't have a fleet big enough to patrol everywhere, that's why they're trying to revive the many planets defense forces that were discarded by the Empire in favor of "imperial garrisons". We're being constantly led to believe the NR is a second empire, that they're bad and so corrupt they can't do any good, and deserve what they got in the sequels.

I believe the issue with why the new republic has b-wings with a composite beam and the rebels didn't has to do with the role specialized equipment has. The rebels needed a jack of all trades as opposed to a fighter that fits a specific role because the diverse targets the rebels encountered. Where the new republic had a proper navy and could afford to equipment specialized units to carry specific roles.

Also they are the single superpower in the Galaxy now. So they got all the money and labor and do not have to run and hide from an Imperial Navy. Like before. If your role is actually keeping the peace and defending the territory you hold instead of hit-run tactics vs a stronger foe. It makes sense to specialize weapons. Or even have weapons that no longer serve that previous role and get repurposed.

My guess is those B-Wings were probably produced shirtly after the end of the Galactic Civil War. The New Republic probably wanted those added to squads to deal with marauding Imperial ships. The intent being it would serve long enough to deal with Imperial remnants and a few things after that before being retired. And for At-Attin, there must have been someone in the New Republic who had been around during the High Republic and rembered the Jewel Worlds and knew At-Attin haf not fallen like the others. The potential of a world just bursting with credits could really help stabilize the New Republic and put it on a solid footing going forward.

In the same series of Mando, where Navara later called for help aginast the pirates from the new republic, they also rejected becoming members as not to pay taxes and other things before the pirates came. A planet that decided agianst becomming a member is therefore logically not a priority for the new republic.

3:24 I view it differently. Kh'ymm might not be part of the military but she has familiarity with the squad of X-wings that come to save her, whether its the pilots themselves or their commander. That encounter set off alarms with the New Republic and the Pirate attack on Lanupa probably confirmed that something was up. It may very well be that the Squad was ready to go at any moment to take on the pirate frigate as soon as it made its next appearance.

I know why and it’s pretty simple really. It’s to take on large pirate, criminal, etc ships when a cruiser or capital ship isn’t available for whatever reason. It’s a lot more efficient then risking many more lives and massive costs of a major asset when a squad of x-wings and a couple B-Wings could do the same thing.

@@kebabgud On the contrary. Archives on Coruscant should have info on it. But it probably is only known by a select few. Probably dead senators. Who hid the place. It is the mint for the entire Republic. The old one. Even Palpatine didn't have access it seems. Since clearly the place is not taken over by the Empire in between. The planet went into full lockdown I suspect when the war broke out between the Confederacy and Republic. And when the Republic was changed into the Empire those that knew of this planet with its vast vaults of wealth was probably erased in the records by rebel higher ups. In order to prevent the empire from tapping into that wealth. As all universes run on money/resources. At Attin is too valuable to be in the hands of your enemies. It would basically be checkmate if the Empire got their hands on it. But being hidden for this long. At least a quarter of a century. Seeing as Luke is building his first temple in this time period. So it is about 25 years. That is long.

I like the comment that said law enforcement responds pretty quickly to rich neighborhoods, when pirates attacked Lanupa. They said they were "independent" so that should mean they have to hire their own security, which could be in other places on the planet. Nevarro was also said to be "independent" and that they were offered a place in the New Republic but rejected it. So when they called for help, it was natural for them to say 🖕. But Lanupa has money, and certainly the Banking Clan does, so perhaps they made an exception, that they might not have if the bankers weren't there that day. I think in both cases they decided not to join a New Republic that doesn't have its act together financially, and might not last long, and they didn't want to pay taxes. I think the repercussions of saving At Attin from pirates might be for them to be the New Republic's financial backer as an alternative to the Banking Clan, so they can be on solid footing, end austerity (like the IMF and World Bank require developing nations to do), eliminate piracy and invest in the economy (like New Deal programs) to encourage economic growth and prosperity for 20-30 years. What happens after that is another story.

It might seem like the New Republic is biased in who they help, but factor in how low they are on resources and how stretched thin they are, having At-Attin's wealth added to the New Republic's assets would go a long way to extending their reach and ability to help others.

It was great to see the B-wing with it's prototype configuration. It's one of my favorite starfighters. And the squadron that they sent was a perfect response to the pirate threat. I hope they do more mini-series like this to flesh out this time period. I don't think this show will get a second season. It would be nice to see the characters a few years down the road if there's a story to explore.

The B Wing is one of my favorite legends vessels. It uses the advantage of being in space to maximum effect to increase bomb payload and an insanely powerful anti capital laser. The T design allowed them to pack in near small capital ship payloads while housing advanced targeting and tracking systems. Its a one trick poney, but it has one helluva trick This is a dedicated bomber ship with some tricks unlike the Y Wing which was cheap and versatile, but didn't have the firepower of a B wing

In Star Citizen there is the Ares series of anti-capital ship fighters that fill a similar role to this model of the B-wing. They are designed along the same lines as a space A-10 with a HUGE offset spinal mount weapon (ballistic for the Inferno, directed energy for the Ion, the former better at penetrating shields and armour, but being ammo-dependent, the latter weaker but able to lay down the heat indefinitely) that can damage capital ships, but they are not dogfighters. The prevailing tactic is to send a couple of them in with interceptors as escorts to keep enemy fighters off of them so they can dish out damage to the enemy ship, which seems to be the same principle they used here.

from my understanding, the composite laser was directly linked to the hyperdrive. so if they wanted to use the laser then they couldn't use the hypderdrive or vice versa. and so the reason the production model didn't have the composite laser might be because of the hit-and-run tactics employed by the rebellion at the time which the b-wing with the laser wouldn't be able to easily do on their own. when i saw the scene of the b-wings using the laser on the pirate frigate, i just assumed they did so because they weren't planning to jump away but were going to secure the planet and thus didn't need the use of their hyperdrives.

I remembered from rebels is that the reason was that the composite beam weapon had drained the entire hyperdrive. So it would make sense that a cr90 was there it could have docked the b-wings during hyperspace jumps.

Could it be that the force that came to the help of At Attin was (part of the, or all of) the task force that was sent to patrol Lanupa after they successfully kicked out the pirates? I'm guessing Lanupa is a pretty wealthy planet with its tourism industry. After confirming that At Attin was real, that force could've quickly hustled to defend the mint planet, formalities be damned.

For all the Republic knows, the planet is only *allegedly* the lost Old Republic mint world At Attin. The explanation that probably makes more sense is that this particular pirate group has made enough trouble to have a task force already assigned to hunt them down. I imagine those B-wings are a great asset to planetary defense forces. The ISD could roll up on a planet and wipe it out with a blizt attack because planetary defense forces didn't have anything big enough to threaten an ISD. I can see them being a cheaper alternative to larger capitol ships but with similar fire power, especially if the price has gone down. The B-Wing seems to be the best assault ceaft/Heavy bomber the Republic has.

Quarrie and Hera discussed the ship in Rebels; the composite laser failed to make its way from the Blade Wing to the B-Wing because the power drain for the composite laser capacitors left the ship unable to use a hyperdrive for an extended period of time, which didn't very well suit the Rebellion's standard hit-and-run tactic. In episode 3 the New Republic also responded to Owly McOwl sending a couple of x-wings. Perhaps Jod is a priority New Republic target? Wonder what's in those Imperial records the NR would have taken control of.... But of course with the C90 also arriving, it's clear the NR is looking to "claim" At Attin as quickly as possible.

The prototype Bladewing had a design flaw with it's composite laser cannon, it was a massive energy hog. Firing the cannon meant the hyperdrive got taken offline hence why you'll see it hitching a rid with the Phantom. Now The Rebellion was dependent on Hit & Run tactics and didn't exactly have a lot of resources to throw at problems. So R&D to solve the energy issue was shelved and the B-wing was just loaded up with more conventional armaments to compensate. Now in Legends the Rebel B-wings were also hanger queens if the same is true in Disney canon Having weapons systems that are easier to repair or swap out instead of a more complicated beam cannon was a no brainer. Now by new republic era they had more resources to resolve the cannons energy drain issue one way or another. also from a resource standpoint the blaster gas for the cannon is probably cheaper than a magazine of proton torpedoes. So having a fighter with a big honkin space gun that can ruin a light capitol ships day was a lot more resource efficient than sending in a frigate or cruiser. a few x-wings to clear out the pirate fighters, a pair of B-wings to blast the pirate cruiser out of the sky and a CR-90 with Republic marines to mop up the pirate on the ground and run security for a Diplomat to establish relations with At Attin and given the new republic was probably already looking for this crew after they hit the resort at Lanupa the size and swiftness of the Republics response makes a bit more sense.

Moff Gideon had a Light Cruiser and with Morgan Elsbeth's actions and Thrawn's return, perhaps some in the NR are concerned with a bunch of imperial capital ships popping up out of nowhere and attacking. Maybe they are arming the B-Wings with the laser to counter such an event.

The primary opponent is not going to be a Star destroyer. Being able to kill a frigate or corvette in one pass makes for lower risk of losses and a higher chance of the remainder of a threat surrendering. The X-wings provide all in threat reduction and the B-wings kill the main fighting force. The CR-90 can refuel and service the fighters and B-wings thus keeping the unit mobile. A single unit like this can suppress pirate activity across multiple worlds quickly, easily at low cost. The only change I would make would be to take an old bulk freighter and equip it as a mobile fuel and support depot able to provide a home away from home. The mobile depot does not need armour but equipping it with a few concussion missile launchers and a few self defense lasers would be good.

A favorite tactic of Wedge Antilles was to add a shit ton of launchers to a freighter. Have the X-Wings lock on and share it's target package with the freighter. Star Destroyers may laugh at a squadron's worth of incoming torpedos, but they shit themselves when the freighter belches out a 100.

A big cost saving measure to consider with fighters/bombers over capitol ships is personael. Even if you pack a single fighter/bomber with all the best tech possible and make it as expensive as it could possibly get, let's even assume it got as expensive as say a venator, over all it'd still be so much cheaper and easier to field. If it can have the capitol ship destroying power in it, that's just a win. Even if you account for all the mechanics and support personal needed to keep a b wing flying, it still isn't going to get close to the costs of even the smallest corvettes. Let alone a real capitol ship. So while you couldn't even replace you entire navy with fighters/bombers like that, it sure does help with costs. Especially for more peacekeeping missions. It's a really smart move to put that kind of power in these ships.

If memory serves the composite beam of quarries original prototype was removed due to it not being possible to have a hyperdrive AND the beam. That was why in rebels, the phantom had to dock with the prototype to get it into battle. This would have not worked with the rebel alliance doctrine at the time which relied on hit and run tactics using hyprdrive eqipped starfighters. As this is after the main part of the war i assume the new republic either had the time and resources to fix the power issue to allow the b-wing to have a hyperdrive and the beam, or they simply had more capital ships that could transport the b-wing with the beam into battle. Im leaning to the latter as the cr90 shown in the show, has 2 docking clamps that would fit b-wings which would account for the fact there were only 2

As a conjecture, the composite laser may have been reliant on specific materials that had a period of poor supply. Until the heavy strike capacity of that weapon could be produced, the interim deployment of mixed-weapon packages was allowed, with the knowledge that once the composite laser equipment was available, or the necessary training for the maintenance crews was sufficient, the B-wing could be returned to its originally designed configuration.

I think you all are missing the point, Jod is a wanted man and added to the fact that he is in control of a small pirate navy the new republic would probably be more inclined to send a strike force to neutralize the pirates. Another fact to this is that in episode 3 it was made ultra clear that Jod was high up on the wanted list by how fast a pair of x-wings showed up

If I was writing Skeleton Crew, I would have had Kym ask KB if Jod's ship was the same that raided Lanupah. When she answers yes, Kym would happily cry, "Perfect! The Republic's already got their best pirate hunting squadrons on their trail! Wasn't a smart idea attacking the favorite resort of the rich and powerful! The Banking Clans are really miffed about their convention being disrupted! They're personally funding the hunt! " This would explain the rapidity of the Republic's arrival on At Atin.

Just a note that the B-Wing wasn't an entirely original design, it was based on the clone wars era H-60 Tempest Heavy Bomber developed by Slayn & Korpil's, which had very similar design and silhouette, although H-60 was bigger and slower, and required two people to operate it, a pilot and a weapons systems operator.

The stars we could see around At-Attin were all crisp and bright, whatever their distance, which would suggest it's somewhere in the middle of a spiral arm or somewhere closer to the galactic core. You'd want to have your high value hidden planets somewhere close to the power structure, where it could be assisted at a wing's flap. The biggest thing that doesn't sit well with me is the Empire not having any presence, in memory or word. If the last message they received from the (old) Republic, what, then, of any correspondence following? If the nascent Empire knew of At-Attin's whereabouts, why send just a message and no jackboots to make sure your trust fund for Rey wasn't pillaged? SO MUCH about this show was enjoyable and filled my soul like a hearty meal, but an equal measure confounded me with unanswered questions and the expectation for us to just accept it all and move along, move along.

Probably one of the big problems that the Empire had is that it treated worlds as potentially hostile systems where it had to keep the peace by brute force and intimidation. This requires overwhelming firepower. Which in turn requires many very large very ppwrrful and very expensive ships with lots of crew. They also wanted ISDs to be able to subjugate entire worlds pretty much single-handedly. This increases the need for size and firepower. And further increases cost.

The composite laser can alpha strike a cruiser. Great for killing pirates while they're currently raiding a planet. Maybe the New Republic only has a few but they send them out for this sort of thing.

If you watch the attack run of the B-wing Prototype in Rebels it basically two hit KOs the Arquitens Light Cruiser while in a blockade formation so assumedly all power not being sent to weapons were being put to the forward shields with Agent Kallus even proclaiming it to be impossible as he watches it happen so if that composite beam can slice through the Imperial Military's technology like a hot knife through butter I cant see pirates giving them much issue

The B-Wings may also have some anti-fighter weapons included in their strike package. Concussion missile launchers, probably. If you have a modular heavy assault fighter, may as well have it equipped for several different types of engagements! I was real excited to see the B-Wing get some screen time, though! I think the CR-90 Corellian corvette was carrying those two B-wings in its hangar. The issue of the B-wing prototype was it drawn too much power and having both a hyperdrive and the composite beam was a wee bit too much for it. Because of that I think these B-wings were not the bombers we seen in Return of the Jedi but a ship-based variant that went the composite beam route with a bigger powerplant and no hyperdrive to be a ship-killer against small-to-mid sized ships. These having hyperdrives make little sense, on the other hand CR-90-s were geared towards anti-fighter combat, the X-wing could go against ships but again, it was geared mostly towards anti-fighter combat. Having these B-wings with them as backup will give the flotilla something to use against bigger ships they'd have a problem with. This way there was no need to call in a Nebulon B or an MC-80 to help (which weren't around all that much). Since the demilitarization following the Galactic Civil War did away with most bigger ships, the New Republic had to make use of smaller sized, speedy patrol flotillas like this to cover quite a lot of territory. The New Republic fleet was also rearming so this was a stop-gap measure.

In terms of response time, it's possible that the NR has a pre-existing policy for worlds/systems which didn't know about the rise of the old republic/rise of the empire - to quote hitchhiker guide, space is big and there were possibly a ton of worlds/systems not seen on screen/page that were unaware of the change. So these worlds would be given automatic membership status if rediscovered and untill their opted in/out. The Starfighter doctrine also makes a lot more sense with the reduction in the new republics standing galaxy wide defence force (so temporarily dismissing sector forces at the moment) - an efficient defence force Vs a big one: 15 pilots are able to take down a massive capital ship with crews which could number in their hundred / thousands. All of a sudden having a MASSIVE navy means nothing as it can be scuttled by a handful of pilots. It suddenly makes the First Order plan of "WMD then attack" make a lot more sense as their GIANT star destroyers were bigger yes, but would have been susceptable to a more efficient NR star fighter strife in a conventional attack - in short, the first order are just building bigger yammato class battleships while the NR is building F-35B jets.

This strike group gives perfect sense (as @Shawn_M mentioned before me) regarding immediate composition, but it is perfectly logic from other points of view too. - scalability - If you add B-wings (wich have like pilot or three on starship), it GREATLY upgrades strenght of the overall punch of your group. 2 B-wings with lasers can down a frigate. 20 of B-wings with lasers can (covered by X-wings against starfighters and corvette from afar) scar pretty badly even regular Imperial stardestroyer. Other way to pump up the firepower would be to add capital ships, and that would be much more crew-hungry (and long-term costly) solution. - modularity - Your corelian corvette needs to transport 2 suqads of troopers on planet or different ship? Simply swich in the corvette hangar the laser modul from your B-wings for personal carrier module and you can go. - Debatable accuracy - Laser is pretty quick, therefore by my count, it might be use even against smaller quicker targets, like a kinda "sniper gun". - Speed of deployment - Such light and quick group is PERFECT for answering time sensitive and SERIOUS troubles. Much quicker, than republic "big ships" ever would. Or even quicker than the empire ever would.

Seems to me what is continuously forgotten when it comes to that kind of fire power in such a small package is: How many capitol ships can you hide in a debris field? Or in an asteroid field? I figure you could hide an entire squadron of B Wings to devastating effect easier than a cap ship. This was the empire's mistake, thinking bigger was always better.

Original Canon had the B-Wing mobile enough to take on Tie Fighters where needed. Tie Interceptors however.... that's where A-Wings as escorts were needed.
